24-5 in last 29 games. We've had a lead in every game mid 4th quarter, so I think it's hard to say we've been "outcoached" in the games. Obviously, we've been leading highly ranked teams (except for yesterday) late in the 4th but have not been able to hang on.
So... I don't know how you look at that and say "Franklin sucks at X's & O's" or "Franklin has no idea how to coach". If that were true we wouldn't be in games with the #2 team in the country. We wouldn't be leading USC in the Rose Bowl with 5 minutes to play. Obviously the man is good at his job, no one is that lucky just because he is good a recruiting. Texas has sucked for a while and does better in recruiting than we do. Other teams have recruited better than us and don't win.
Franklin can obviously coach. His staff obviously knows what it's doing. You don't win the Big Ten, go back to back 10 win season, and crack the top 10 if you have no clue what you are doing.
HOWEVER... In the last minutes of games he obviously has issues with a couple of things. Clock management is one. Play selection, which can go back to clock management, is second. Defensive strategy is third. PSU seems to play not to lose in tight games, they do not play to win. That's what is frustrating, because you can see it happening but can't do anything but just watch.
Now, sometimes we're able to rely on Trace for a big drive and salvage the game like against Iowa and App State, but other times the team we are playing is too go defensively for that or there just isn't enough time on the clock. But these issues are correctable. They can be modified.
Simplest thing we can do is tell them to run the damn clock down to 3 seconds and then hike it. I noticed that in the early games too, we were up 35 points and hiking the ball with 17 on the play clock. You should be practicing running clock at that point. That doesn't mean running the ball, still play your offense but just get in the habit of bleeding clock. That's actually a lot of our problem, if we just bled the clock in 3 of these games we probably win.
BOOM! You hit it right on the head Roam!

It goes farther than just Rahne alone! Pry's D strategy, Franklins game/clock management and Rahne's play selection.
I agree with the late game issues you two gentlemen have zeroed in on, agree 100%. I'm also beginning to wonder if the strength & conditioning program might have something to do with the defense getting gassed late in the game. I understand we don't have the full benefit of experienced depth to allow for more rotation against tougher teams, but we had some pretty good defenses down through the years and I really don't remember us doing much substituting.
Very valid point Bob. I thought the same thing. We used to be a second half team and was strong in the 4th qtr. You would thing with the facilities and the kind of program PSU has stamina for a 60 minute game would be a strength not a weakness.
Mostly good points Roam but I'd like to add another and much briefer way of looking at it realistically.
As coach of PSU Franklin is 3-12 against OSU,MSU and UM and 2-9 vs teams in the top 25. Don't waste my time with sanctions excuses, good coaches win when they're not suppose to.
Franklin is a fraud.
Very interesting comments on PSU Football HC - James Franklin
Ouch, the last stat, 2-9 against top 25 teams ....
Always easy to blame the coach. Stupid penalties by the players cost us this game.
So true and guilty. Missed field goal/s, dropped pass/es, dropped interception, and stupid penalties. It's just too easy getting pissed with the man who is getting paid$$$. I say we start paying the players so we can lay the blame where it belongs.
"Good coaches win when they are not supposed to"
Due to sanctions we weren't supposed to be 7-6 in 2014 & 2015, and in 2016 we weren't supposed to win the Big Ten. But We did.
Sanctions aren't an excuse, they were a reality. USC is still crying about their sanctions for pete's sake and they were nothing close to what we went through. 2016 on I don't mention sanctions... But 2014 & 2015? That's just ridiculous to not acknowledge them
Urban Meyer, or any other good coach for that matter, never rolled into a game with 20-25 less scholarships than the opponent. Franklin did it for two seasons. BoB never dealt with the full sactions either, they hit in 2014 with the full reduction.
Exactly Roam
Dammit Roam, stop bringing facts and logic into this argument. The angry mob seems to want their pound of flesh. Im hoping these guys that are calling for heads to roll are preparing their resumes to submit to Sandy B. I truly cant believe how quickly some people turn on Franklin and his coaching staff because of one loss.
Yep, the loss hurt. I didnt like it either. We blew a lot of chances to put it away and I have no doubt that this team(coaches and players) will grow and learn from it.
So, I'll ask this question one more time. To those of you that are calling for the heads of CJF,RR,BP or whomever.......have you gone thru life undefeated??
I can’t believe people are calling for anybody to be fired lol. The DB was put in position to make a play to end the game to get the win and we dropped the ball. Michigan State’s players made a play and we didn’t and it cost us a win it’s that simple tsuga, it happens and I’m sure our guy will make that play next time it’s part of football
I do believe we are still feeling the sanctions James Franklin is just good enough to coach around ‘em. Like you said Roam USC is still complaining about their sanctions and they have a right to because they are a reality. The sanctions penn st and USC were under take 10 years or more to get over. Texas kicking all them players off the team set them back as well, it takes time to fix these kind of problems. The biggest thing penn st and USC did was find good QB’s to overcome weaknesses. You know I’ve said we’re still feeling the sanctions before the last 2 games. I still believe we’re playing around 85% because of the sanctions. To beat Ohio st and the other big dawgs you need to be playing sat a 100%. James Franklin is doing an incredible job IMO and so is Texas as of now. USC is struggling more but they’ll get it fixed it just takes time.
Ya finally gettin it snake lol
Yup keep using sanctions as an excuse for our coaches weaknesses. Rather obvious to me that you have a lot lower expectations than I do so maybe Franklin and his 11 percent win percentage against the top 25 is YOUR guy!
James Franklin is a fraud.
Yep, fire them all! For a cool $10 million, we can probably steal Ash away from Rutgers!!! Oh wait....
Tell us all about your guy Remoh. Who is it?
Remoh, stop saying I'm doing things that I'm not doing. I'm not "still" using sanctions as an excuse, I said they were legitimate reasons in 2014 and 2015.
if you actually read my post you would have seen that I said 2016 forward that I don't factor sanctions into the equation. At all.
After the NFL season BOB may be available.
