@psujoe. Joe and Bear also took over much better situations than James Franklin. 3 times the man has won 11 games and he’s won 2 of 3 big time bowl games and a big 10 championship. 2 times he won 9 games at Vanderbilt lol. Go check and see how many times Vanderbilt has won 9 games and won bowl games.
Not sure this is a fair comparison.....How many bowl games did those other coaches have (back then) compared to today? I think there were like 15 bowls game back in the 80's and today we have around 40 plus!
GO STATE!
@southern-psu-fan By the time Joe was there as long as Franklin he had back to back undefeated seasons
@mtnittanylion OK, I took back my statement of him making a bowl every year he has been a head coach!!! I also agreed different eras, different number of bowl games. But, Franklin has made it to the Liberty which first played in 1959, TaxSlayer Gator bowl 1946, Rose 1902, Cotton 1937, Tangerine/Citrus 1947 and the Fiesta 1971 which were all around when Holtz and Bryant coached. Also if you look at his season records, they are very comparable to the records the old timers had when they made it to their bowl games.
Bryant made 4 bowl games in his first 9 years along with his record for that year
1947 8-3 Great Lakes Bowl, 1949 9-3 Orange Bowl, 1950 11-1 Sugar Bowl, 1951 8-4 Cotton Bowl
Lou Holtz
1970 5-7 Tangerine Bowl (later called Citrus Bowl), 1972 8-3-1 Peach Bowl, 1973 9-3 Liberty Bowl, 1974 9-2-1 Astro Blue Bonnet Bowl, 1975 7-4-1 Peach Bowl, 1977 11-1 Orange Bowl, 1978 9-2-1 Fiesta Bowl
Franklin
Throw away the 2012 9-4 Music City Bowl, 2013 9-4 BBVA Compass bowl and the 2014 7-6 Pinstripe bowl as those bowls weren't around back when Holtz and Bryant coached.
2011 6-7 Liberty Bowl (yea the record was 6-7 but Holtz went to the Tangerine in 1970 with a 5-7 record), 2015 7-6 TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, 2016 11-3 Rose Bowl, 2017 11-2 Fiesta Bowl, 2018 9-4 Citrus (formerly Tangerine) Bowl, and 2020 11-2 Cotton Bowl
So Franklin has made it to 6 bowl games that were around when Bryant and Holtz coached and are NOT garbage bowls.
So to my point that I was trying to make, IMO I think Franklin is right in the mix of where the other 2 were within the first 9 years of their career.
Can you speak in complete sentences? It certainly appears that you cannot write complete sentences. If you have something to say, say it. As far as Southern being a "James Franklin apologist" he is not. He is a man who loves Penn State and likes James Franklin. There is nothing to apologize for about James Franklin. He has made a few mistakes, as have I in my life and work. I am so glad that you think you are perfect. I won't say a perfect what.
@psugrad81 WELL SAID! I wish the moderator would cleanse the board AGAIN of Pipe and his senseless agitation.
@psugrad81 WELL SAID! I wish the moderator would cleanse the board AGAIN of Pipe and his senseless agitation.
Not sure what you're trying to say but .If you think I am someone that has posted here in the past you are wrong. Your insults reek of desperation.
@roaminglion Yea I get it, different eras. You could pick it apart 100 different ways, Bear made 2 of his bowl games with 8 wins and Holtz made his first bowl game the Tangerine bowl with only 5 wins.
The point I was trying to make with the post is, you can't compare Franklin to the other 3 when he has only been a head coach for 9 years as compared to their 33+ year careers. I was just trying to point out his success for his first 9 years as compared to the 3 coaches Bob mentioned. And in the first 9 years Franklin was just as successful as them. Regardless of the bowl situation back then, IMO it is still pretty impressive that Franklin made a bowl game every year since he has been a head coach with 7 wins or more. Don't think there are to many coaches that have accomplished that.
Totally Agree!
@cohappy I’m not saying James Franklin is Joe Paterno because there’s very few I put in that category I’m saying 98% of the teams out there would love to have James Franklin coaching their teams and 99% of the coaches coaching today would love to have accomplished what James Franklin has in coaching winning the big 10, winning the fiesta and cotton bowls and playing in the Rose Bowl. Come on guys look at the mans track record he’s a top 5 coach today and his track record in wins backs my opinion up especially considering the uphill battles he’s fought. Ain’t chit come easy for James Franklin In coaching, he’s worked his butt off. He’s built Penn St back up from walk-ons to having 5* players.
@psujoe and your football knowledge of James Franklin ain’t making no since!
@psujoe and your football knowledge of James Franklin ain’t making no since!
Says the guy that's been predicting next year is our year since 2015.
@psujoe. 2016, 2017 and 2019 we won 11 games winning a big 10 championship and the fiesta and cotton bowls so it has been our year 3 out of 4 years. You’ll never hear me predict we’re going undefeated because I know how hard it is to do. I even use ole Slick Nick as an example of how hard it is to go undefeated because he only has 1 undefeated season. 6 NC’s 1 undefeated season. 10 wins is good goal anything more is a great season and we’ve done it 3 of the last 4 years.
Oh now I understand your mindset! Being good but never being great or in the elite conversation is ok with you. I obviously have a lot higher expectations.
@psujoe. Wrong! Winning 11 games is a great season and when you win 11 games you’ll have special years when you’ll have the right QB and RB that will put you in position to play for the NC and we had it a few year ago Jim Delany just stepped in because he wanted Ohio st. We blew it in 2017 in the Ohio St game and Michigan State game we couldn’t make the plays to put the games away and our players were in position we just didn’t get it done but this happens to all good teams every year where you’ll have games where you can’t get out of your own way it just doesn’t happen to penn st it happens to all teams. some teams just get a pass for losing and some teams don’t.
@southern-psu-fan WRONG!!! We had our chance to be elite a couple years ago but stupid coaching decisions blew it. Did JF ever thank Joe Moorhead for saving his job? PSU will never be elite as long as they have a head coach with low football IQ.
@psujoe. James Franklin doesn’t owe joe Moorhead anything he hired him to do a job and because of James Franklin he was able to move on to become a head coach again at a major college. Ain’t it funny that Ohio st, Michigan, Tennessee, Mississippi State and other colleges chase after coaches that coach under and learn from James Franklin? Smart move on their part
LMAO@ Moorhead learning from moron Franklin! Now I'm starting to wonder about your football IQ. Moorhead was well established before he came too PSU and everyone knew he would be there 2 years max. Well, everyone but you knew.
The only coach ( not named Dabo or Saban) that would move the needle immediately at PSU would be Urban Meyer. I’m not sure Urban would take another head coaching job or if PSU would take a chance on him with his questionable character decisions, but he would turn it around very quickly. Beyond him, I have no idea where to start, but make no mistake whomever would be the coach taking over for Franklin would be walking into a situation much better than Franklin did.
Matt Ruhle
You are correct 99, Urban is damaged goods.
