Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy! What have ye wrought. Talk about digging your own grave!
I put an article up about the iron Sheik on the wrestling forum. He was a bad A double S. Dude is 80 man. This is out of the blue I just read the article because I’m a huge wrestling fan. He did wrestling and I believe he won gold
So we draft well but then the problem has to be depth (two deep and/or level of all starters) or coaching? A few stars performing at a high level do not make a team.
@underlion the last 2 years have been a coaching problem from what seen. Ain’t none of the coaches done a good job. Can’t run, can’t block and can’t get a stop on defense when the game is on the line. Hopefully James Franklin gets his head back in the game and we get back on track because 11-11 just ain’t good enough. There is no excuse for the last 2 years and there’s no way to sugarcoat anything when we’ve been recruiting good and sending our fair share to the NFL.
Agree 100% Southern. I still say it's an easy fix and it's all on Jimmie. He needs to butt out and let the coaches he hired do the coaching.
If that doesn't work fire the coaches who aren't getting it done. That's his job, hire and fire, not coaching!
Play Christian V against Iowa ( when Cliff went out) and the whole Illinois game and Penn State wins both games. Then, sit back, watch the Oregon film vs Ohio State and you will see that Oregon scored ALL 5 of their TD's against the Ohio State defenses right side ( Oregon's offensive left side ). Better yet, watch the Penn State vs Ohio State game from last year. Penn State scored ALL off their points against the the right side of the Ohio State defense. Had they pounded the right side of the Ohio State defense, still make the dumb mistakes that they made and most likely win THAT game too!
I have no clue what JF and Co are doing half the time and I don't think they do either! Do I want JF as the coach? Yep, I still think he is the right guy. He needs to come down of his "high horse" and start reading this forum daily!! Then, and only then, will he become a good HC at Penn State!!!
GO STATE!!!
@mtnittanylion Thanks for the laugh. The idea that Franklin would become a better coach by reading this forum is just plain hilarious. I really hope you were being sarcastic but I am afraid you were not.
Franklin's not a coach, he's the CEO!
@psugrad81 come on now 81, slick Nick ain’t got nothing on any of us 😂
Sorry southern, you lost me there. What does slick Nick have to do with my comment? OK, never mind. As I was typing this I finally understood the comment. I'm a bit slow today. Personally, however, I don't think Nick Saban is an example of a good college football coach. Yes he wins but to me winning is not the most important thing in college sports.

It's interesting you say "winning is not the most important thing" as a reason you're not a fan of Nick, when he'd agree with your statement. If there's anything a former Alabama football player would tell you about Nick Saban, it's that he doesn't care about winning. He never even mentions it to players, ever. Not really his thing. He demands effort and determination, but doesn't really ever mention winning at all.
The most important thing to him, and his players say this, is trying their best in practice and in the game. It's what he calls "the process". What it means is he breaks down everything into more manageable tasks, and then focuses on those things to get better. If his players master those small things, the pieces come together and outcomes follow. However, even if they lose it's not the most important thing to him. I've seen him pissed off after winning 59-0, and proud after losing 17-16.
"In my three decades of coaching, I’ve learned that the process is much more important than the result" - Nick Saban
LOL....I was being sarcastic! HOWEVER, I am pretty confident some of us here could have had a better outcome in several of the games he lost last year. I think he has a good game plan MOST of the time, but he he struggles with GAME TIME decisions way too much for me. I know it easy to call a game from the couch or stands ( after you see what happened) , but when 90% of the people here all point to the same mistakes made week in and week out.....hmmm, makes me wonder a little.
Obviously I am NOT a college football coach caliber person....I am here talking to all of you clowns!! LOL I wish him the best this year, I am positive he wants nothing more than to bring a National Championship to Happy Valley, but in order to do so, guys like me can't be pointing out obvious coaching mistakes that he makes week after week. The Illinois game last year still stinks to high heaven and he had NO business losing that game....and that is what he did! Iowa hurt and I am sure he would have played CV knowing what he knows today. Ohio State....couple of bad breaks but he was right in that game.
I will leave you with this. He has a favorable schedule to start, an experienced QB returning, some very good receivers and some adjustments to the OLine that should help him with the running game. There is NO reason he isn't sporting a 5-0 record heading to Ann Arbor Oct 15th! He has the talent returning, let's see what he does with it!!
GO STATE!!!
@roaminglion Sad, but true. Hopefully they get their excrement together this year.
James Franklin is a good head coach and a good CEO as long as he’s doing one at a time. When James Franklin is just coaching and not worrying about contracts and stadium repairs, he’s a top 5 coach but if he’s working on other stuff while he’s trying to coach, he drops to a top 50 coach. The CEO stuff is over for now and you’ll see when his mind is on coaching we’ll win 11 games.

If you're talking about top 5 in the B1G you're probably right but if you're claiming he's top 5 in the country you're as delusional as they come. James Franklin has never been close to being top 5 in the country nor will he ever be top 5. There are many people that would argue he's not even top 5 in the conference.
Prog
@psujoe Now that the business side of James Franklin is done with gettin new contracts you just wait and see if we don’t win 11 games this year. When James Franklin is coaching and not thinking about other things like contracts, he’s a top 5 coach and this year will prove my point because now he has all that behind him. We’ll win 11 or more games this year and this is a rebuilding year.
Hope you're right buddy. Personally, I'd like to see what would happen if James Franklin lets his coaches coach. He'd still get the credit!
He blows a 5-0 start this year and ________________________?
I think we ALL know how to fill in THAT blank! He get's to 5-0, I don't think we will see a repeat of last year. May still lose a game or two, but not 6! If does, then he made some nice bank at PSU and should be set for life!
Honestly, as much as I question him as the HC, I really believe his heart is in it and I am certain he wants to win more than we do!! I don't think he will make the same mistakes again this year.

2011....JVP situation unfolds, program ends the year in shambles.
2012 & 2013.....hit with major sanctions, B'OB steps in and out. Nobody new the sanctions would be over in 24 months vs 4 years. Recruiting players wasn't ALL that easy.
2014....JF takes over, makes a bowl game finishes 7-6
2015....Another bowl game and finishes 7-6 again
2016....MAJOR BOWL game, WINS the BIG10 and upsets #2 Ohio State along the way and finishes 11-3
2017....MAJOR BOWL game, loses 2 close games ( and maybe we can say blew 2 close games if it makes you happier ) beats #19 Michigan, gets a major bow game and beats #9 Washington and finishes 11-2
2018....Another bowl game, one bad loss against Michigan, the rest he was in and finishes 9-4
2019....MAJOR BOWL GAME, 3-2 against ranked teams and had them ALL on the ropes finishes 11-2
2020....COVID Hits!! Starts out 0-5 and finishes 4-0 ( try encouraging a team week after week to keep their heads up while losing week after week )
2021....takes the 4-0 streak and expands it to 9-0. Another Bowl game with some key players opting out.
Now I don't know what all this means, but doesn't sound like a BOTTOM 5 coach to me. Top 5? maybe not. Top 10, yeah, think that's a safe claim!
The guys takes over a crippled program, spends two seasons figuring it out and then goes to 3 MAJOR BOWL games and wins the BIG 10 and then a world wide pandemic hits. Yes, it didn't affect SOME coaches, but they are the coaches SOUTHERN is saying is ahead of JF or he would have him at #1. And if I remember correctly, PSU didn't know they would be playing football until a week or so before the season started.....and Micah opts out. I would think that contributed a lot to the 0-5 start!

Doesn’t matter what the record is this year because he’s not getting fired this early into the contract. Why are you questioning a guy you claim is top ten in the country?
That is a fair question. He has done some extraordinary things ( IMO) since he first stepped foot on campus. JF has had two things to deal with where most coaches only had one thing to deal with in a reactively short period of time. They all had to maneuver through the whole Covid issue - which was a mess in itself and very big distraction. But none of them took over a program even close to having the issues JF had to contend with in their first two years. What he was able to accomplish in-between the JVP and Covid thing and what he did after starting out 0-5 during Covid suggests to me is he is a good coach and well above most.
I get frustrated with some of his "on the spot" play calling and decision making. I guess I should rephrase my comment to I question his Game Day decisions and not HIM as the HC coach at Penn State. He is a top 10 coach in that he is committed to the program, does a really nice job recruiting some great talent and has kept Penn State relevant in the Big 10 and Nationally. If he wants to win a National Championship, he has to do a better job making game time adjustments and play calling. This is where my question/concern lies. Does he have the ability to take his game to the next level or is Penn State just going to be competitive but not a powerful top 5 program under his control.

Franklin is not a top 5 coach. There's absolutely no way. Top coach in the Big Ten? Most people say Ryan Day, and it's hard to argue with his success at Ohio State. Next people would argue Harbaugh, but certainly not Franklin. So...
You've got Day ahead of him, and let's say for the sake of argument Franklin is #2 in the Big (he's not)
- Saban has multiple national titles and is 100% ahead of him.
- Dabo Sweeney has multiple national titles and is 100% ahead of him.
- Kirby Smart just won a national title and is 100% ahead of him.
- Jimbo Fisher had a national title and is 100% ahead of him.
- Now add Ryan Day to that list
That's easily 5 people that are 100%, without a doubt, "better" coaches than Franklin if you are putting together a top 5 list. Franklin does not belong above anyone on that list... no way.
I am just curious here. Did any of the mentioned coaches take over a MESS like JF did and have similar success? Is a great coach only measured by his National Championships? Year three he wins a Big10 title and gets boxed out of the CFP.
I am not saying he is a top 5 coach either. But he is far from a bum as you seem to make him sound like!
