Two examples of thriving Central American countries are Costa Rica and Panama. Both have strong democracies with equally strong economies, and can definitely serve as an example that it's possible for capitalism and democracy to succeed in Central America.

The big issue the other four countries I mentioned have is not socialism, it's corruption and gang violence. The United States can absolutely help those countries, and it would absolutely stem the tide of immigrants coming to the southern border.

Basically those four countries economies never came back after the war with the sandinistas, and the gangs pretty much filled the void.

Until South American countries understand socialism don’t work they can’t be helped. This is just my opinion though I can’t prove it lol. I just go by what I see on the news and I try and connect the dots Roam

Ummm...

1. none of the four countries I mentioned are in South America, they are in Central America

2. Of the four, only Guatamala could be called socialist. We actually fought a war against socialists in Nicaragua (Sandinistas) with the help of Honduras and El Salvador and drove the socialists out

3. Guatamala is trying to get out of socialism, they just have no money. It is a very poor country.

4. All four are basically democratic republics, but need help with corruption and gang violence.

So basically... yeah, we can help them because they don't want socialism Southern. LMAO.

With regard to the south American countries, I believe socialism isn’t the problem, it’s corruption. To my recollection none of them except Cuba have a purely socialist or communist system.

I thought from Mexico on down was South America lol, my bad. I’m just going by what I watch on the news and most of the news stations I watch say socialism is why the South American countries struggle. Now IMO the bigger government gets the more corrupt it’s gets because they control everything but that’s just my opinion nothing I can prove except what I watch on the news which most of it is fake anyway so who knows lol

We’ve give them money from what I’ve heard on the news but Trump said he was going to stop giving them money so if that not working and gangs are running things then the only next step IMO is send the military in and clean house and I mean clean house baby. The only way to get rid of these MS13 gangs is to kill ‘em. Can the drug cartel down in Mexico or wherever really handle our military? I don’t think these scumbags running the show really want to stop anything regardless where they’re from including this country because if they did they’d send the military in and really clean house. If you are a gang member or a cartel member  you die it’s that simple. If we can send our great military in and kill osama bin Laden in Pakistan  then we can send them in Mexico and all the other bad places and kill the people that need to be killed. The question is do they really want to? Like I said some of this stuff is way over my head lol but if you really want it done then do it baby, Barack Obama did!!!

Southern and Roam, the more I follow this thread, the more I realize how dumb I am, LOL.  I'm not chiming in because I'm really not up to snuff on the issues involved.  The only thing I can offer is THANK GOD I LIVE IN THE GOOD OLD US OF A!  I wish all the America haters in this country realized how good we all have it here.  Maybe they should immigrate to one of these countries you guys are talking about and then they would realize how great our country truly is.  GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Besides jimmy carter I think all presidents have done a good job. Life is pretty dang IMO if you get out and earn what you’ve got and not depend on government for a handout. I’ve done great under Obama, Clinton, The Bushes and I’m doing great now so IMO Trump is doing a great job just like the rest of ‘em. You ain’t ever going to see eye to eye on everything

I think it was over the top, and kinda felt like what dictators and socialist/communist countries do. Not sure I want to be part of the club that does military parades when the club members are basically China, North Korea, and Russia. We're better than that.

That said, it didn't aggravate me or anything... just feel it is unnecessary.

As for all Presidents using the military this way, I disagree. I've never witnessed a more consistent use of the military to drum up sentiment. Most of the vets I know hate it, and just wish he'd stop. Now vet organizations and retired military personnel are actually denouncing it and speaking out. Don't you think we should at least listen to them, instead of just going "oh well I like it"?

You'd think if vet groups were speaking out about it, and we actually cared about them... we might step back and at least think about if we're going a bit too far with it? I mean, if we do value their service maybe we should value their input too. Just a thought.

I don't like it. Using our military for political props and power is absolutely B.S. Some presidents  more than ever and they take full advantage of it. I'm glad some groups spoke up. What's even more disgusting is showing force of military power for votes of the upcoming election.

The problem with Trump cutting more funding is he already cut funding to the countries in 2017, which lead to the problems of more people trying to come here. Cutting funding again seems asinine, but it certainly plays with his base.

You ain't kidding Bob, we have it great here. My wife and I have taken a few trips down to Guatamala for charity work, and it's crazy how little they have... and how dangerous the crime really is. We are accompanied by armed guards during our time there, because the gangs and cartels are complete POS trying to keep the citizens down.

My wife does free surgeries there and I would help out with whatever I can, and man are those people so nice and thankful for the help. Hard working too, my wife tries to tell them they need to take time off to heal but they are in the fields the next day working.

It's sad how little they have, when we have so much more here. THAT SAID... they should be documented when they come here, they should not be allowed to come in illegally. I know that sounds harsh to the more liberal posters among us, but it's the truth.

What the USA could do better is help them more, with aid and work programs. Help build their local economies up and work with their governments to go after the cartels and gangs. Make it so their people don't have to leave. It's a win / win. Their citizens have a better life in their own country, and can take pride in it while being grateful for our help... and we don't have to turn away large amounts of people at the border for asylum, because Central America is stable.

I personally don't like it but I will defer to the vets on this one... I think it's unnecessary and a waste of money but I will always defer to the vets on these matters and let them sort it out... Our great country will survive President Trump just like we survived all the rest of them...I will say one last thing on this matter... Tsuga, my ancestors and every veteran paid a dear price for what we have...dont disrespect their sacrifice and vote... VOTE no matter what party or what your ideals are VOTE .. That is your opportunity to make your voice heard and these fine folks sacrifices so much for that right and privilege and so few honor them by taking the time to VOTE... That is all I have to say and THANK GOD for all of the Veterans out there. . We owe EVERYTHING we have and enjoy to those fine folks...

Titan, you have no clue what our politicians go through and what they really know. It’s easy to play Monday morning QB when you don’t have all the facts. I just try and connect the dots but when I hear Chuck Schumer tell president Trump to stay hard on China that tells me chuck knows something that 99% of the people don’t. You’ll never know what they know it’s that simple that’s why I support whoever wins because that’s what the people wanted or they wouldn’t have won. All the crap they whine about is nothing but something to distract us lol. I pull for Uncle Sam regardless who’s running the show because if you’re not you’re cutting off the hand that feeds your face.

let me preface this by saying I do vote...

... but not voting is a way to be heard as well. Every voting year certain demographics either have a high turnout or a low turnout, and in the low turnout years politicians see they weren't getting out their message to a certain group of people. The result of that is always a readjustment of priorities for politicians, and they usually talk to the people that didn't turn out so that they can try and get them to go to the polls next time.
