An article came out today that had multiple sources including the Big 12 commissioner, Barry Alvarez, and even one person on the college football committee stating that we should start to talk about going to an 8 team playoff... even before the ESPN 4 team contract is up.

Seems like a lot of people are seeing the big flaws in the system and starting to speak up about it. This is how change happens.

here is the article if you want to check it out, but unfortunately it's behind a paywall so you probably won't be able to see it. I'm sure there are other news sites now reporting about it, linking to the original story

Bottom line is if the SEC found itself left out, it would happen tomorrow.

Exactly right brother! They would never leave the SEC out even if they had 2 losses

Personally I would like to see no playoff at all.  Just have 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4,...,11 vs 12 in the new years six bowls.  That way we could all go back to arguing in the off season that our team should be number 1.

I am so glad we don't have that type of system anymore... Just feels like we're screwing over a bunch of deserving kids for the sake of fans being able to argue.

I don’t care what they come up with as long as the power 5 conferences champs get in the playoffs. Your 8 teams playoff I’m good with because IMO the best team will be in the top 8.

That may sound good on paper, but what if a 5-7 Nebraska wins Big West and then beats the Winner of the East in the CC.  Do you really want a 6-7 team in the playoffs battling for National Championship rights??  I sure as heck don't.  I still say, Eliminate the split division conferences - increase # of schools in each division and make that a conference.  Each team plays every other team in conference to determine a champ.  But ... and the big butt!  A team still needs to have a , oh I don't know, lets say a 8-4 record or better to make the playoffs.  We'll have 4 or 5 conferences in this scenario - and plenty of room for wild card picks.

Now I sit and wait for Tsuga's comment about my big butt~!

I do because if you win your conference that should mean something. NFL teams make the playoffs if they win the division. Had Pittsburgh beat Clemson they should make the playoffs. I really don’t think that will happen all that much bob. It will happen every once in a while.

In BoB's system winning your conference would still mean something, but you're saying it should mean everything.

With the trend of NFL bound players forgoing non playoff bowls,an 8 team playoff may help cut this down.

Some of the Bowl games are nothing more than giving college football nuts something to do until the real games begin. Many  of these VERY minor games have players that appear not to care much about the outcome. Maybe an expanded playoff will lead to the elimination of Toilet Paper Bowls.

My apologies Bob, i've been sleeping on my post and totally missed this one till now.  I'm not much into big butts but I have been called an 'ass man' several times. People will come up to me and say, "Hey, you're an ass, man".  There were a few 'ifs' in you post......always remember that if grandma had balls she'd be grandpa.

Let’s go 16 and eliminate all Bowl games.
