With the exception of Moorhead, what assistant coaches under Franklin have voluntarily left for promotion versus a lateral move?
Charles Huff: He's the co-run game coordinator and assistant coach at MSU. He was running backs/special teams coach here. An upgrade for sure, though not a huge one.
Josh Gattis: All respect to Penn State, but the same job at Alabama isn't a lateral move. Not when they've won 5 NC's in 8 years. He moved onto a staff widely considered the best to be on if you want to move up quickly and get great offers.
Didn't think it was but one or possibly two!
Maybe I'm stuck in the past, but it would be nice to start seeing some more alumni get on this staff - maybe it's naive, but I would think their desire to jump ship for a better position would be less then those of a non-alumni status.
Although im not on the "FF" (Fire Franklin) bandwagon I do think some changes need to be made on the coaching staff. I think losing Gattis and Moorehead was a swift kick to Franklin's nads and he still hasnt been able to straighten up from it. I get the feeling that the Gattis move caught him completely off gaurd.
Just once, just once I say; I'd like to see a two back set just to appease this ancient, senile, depends wearing old man from the north.
I agree, we need to find a good WR coach immediately. In reality, we never found one last year... we just moved a guy we hired for the RBs into the WR slot.
It's imperative we find a WR specialist to come in and teach, I don't care where they are from as long as they know how to teach the WR position. Someone who can address two specific things: Focus & route running.
IMO, I think that era is gone BoB. In all walks of life, not just football. You really don't see much loyalty in the workplace today, people leave for better jobs all the time. No one wants to wait their turn while they see other people jumping around and moving up the ladder quickly.
Even I have to admit, if I was the WR coach at PSU and Alabama offered me more money for the same position? I'd take it too. No question. I'd be making more money, working with a living legend head coach, and probably fast-forwarding my coaching career by 5 years. Loyalty is one thing, but I don't think it's worth millions of dollars and waiting much longer than others to do the same jobs.
I don't know BOB, look at where loyalty got Tom Bradley, LJ and not even to mention what happened to JOEPA!
Franklin really surprised me when he pulled McSorely, albeit briefly, for Stevens. Perhaps, he'll spring another surprise and find a legitimate WR coach in the off-season! PS has recruited too much talent at that position not to be show improvement in route running and catching the ball.
And still hasn't straightened up from it .... another Gem !!!! Friends have told me that my golf swing makes them think I'm the illegitimate son of Louie Tiante, could there be a Berra in your family tree?
BOB: I'm pretty sure that the only berries on my family tree are dinkleberries. Louis Tiant.....there's a blast from the past!! My family tree looks less like a tree and more like a shrub.
Years ago my good friend Harry and I decided to take up the game of golf. One fine saturday morning my friend Harry suffered a massive heart attack just before the 3rd tee. What a miserable day that was as it was hit the ball, drag Harry.....hit the ball, drag Harry. I was so tired that day that I never picked up my clubs again.
That's why I get a cart!
Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene, He's got a daytime job, he's doing all right.
AHHH some Dire Straits nice!!!
Roam you sure love to genuflect to Saban...What did he do that was so special at Michigan State? How bout his stint in the NFL at Miami? He inherited a title team at LSU...So he goes to Alabama and we all know what goes on down there...The money handshakes, the boosters buying cars for the players..etc. etc. etc...So he is bringing in the best team money can buy...I understand he comes from the Parcells, Belichick or Belicheat coaching tree...If ole Billy boy doesn't have Brady come along he is just an average coach...What did they do in Cleveland when they were coaching together? A great coach takes very good players and makes them great...They all go nuts for coach K at Duke...Give me Jay Wright...He takes kids and coaches em up...These guys have ready made teams and win and everybody acts like they are geniuses...
In my opinion gentlemen I think they need to fire the WR coach, Strength and conditioning coach and the OLine coaches immediately...I would inform Mr. Rahne his seat is on fire and put him on notice as well...I would also let Mr. Franklin know 2019 better be different in a positive way or his seat is gonna have a flame thrower under it...If I was running the show with the PSU athletic dept. that is what I would do...Just my 2 cents..
FD, he had a 10 win season at Michigan State and I believe he had a winning season at Miami 9-7 if I remember right. The man has won 6 NC’s and did it coaching 2 different teams. His record is unbelievable. He did know what he was doing taking the Tide job though but you can’t blame him for that. Ole Slick Nick deserves all the credit he gets IMO. If you notice his teams don’t have stupid penalties either because them players at Alabama know he’ll kick their butts off the team if they start costing Alabama wins. He puts up with no BS and the kids know it and it helps them in life after football. I respect Nick Saban baby. BTW Alabama and LSU were average when he took both jobs, he built them to win NC’s. Michigan State stunk when he took that job too
WR’s and ST’s coach probably needs to be looked at. It’s not Limegrover’s fault the WR’s ain’t catching the ball. I’m telling y’all if we caught 13 of the 26 dropped passes we’d probably be 8-1 right now with Rahne and Limegrover looking dang good. Every team has struggled against Michigan’s defense and Michigan was really up for that game because of the butt kicking we put on them last year. McSorely would have much better numbers and he would be playing with more confidence. The drops and putting the ball on the ground has destroyed the team spirit because these kids know it’s cost us 2 wins.
Dude, he has won 6 national titles. Who cares what he did 25 years ago at another school?
6 National Titles. At two different schools. And it's not "me"... It is pretty much every expert in college football. Regardless of how YOU OR I feel about him, his assistants go on to big time jobs. THAT IS FACT. You are on his staff, your likelihood of getting bigger and better jobs is better than anywhere else.
SPF, you're absolutely right, "It’s not Limegrover’s fault the WR’s ain’t catching the ball." it's Corely, the WR's coach's fault! The same players were catching the ball when Gattis was coaching the WR last year.
If you look at replays (seriously), how long is an O'lineman expected to hold his block for play development and execution and is the current O'line meeting that objective? If they are not is it due to technique, strength and/or poor scheme?
