With Allan Robinson and Chris Goodwin both being labeled franchise players by their teams; who would you say is the all time greatest PSU WR??
Kenny J, Bobby E, Joe J,we've had some good ones. My pick would have to go with A-Rob simply because he made Hack look like a quarterback week in and week out.
Bobby Engram imo is the best but I might change my mind after I see more of Dotson and Parker Washington we’ve got 2 stud WR’s on the team now. Can’t go wrong with A-Rod, Hamilton or Bryant Johnson either.
I was looking on ranker and they had best Penn State players all time and Jack Ham is #1 which I have no problem with but having Tamba Hali at #18 man is just way off man that dude is definitely top 5 if not #3 behind the great Franco Harris. Dude was a monster and he couldn’t be blocked and he was a bad azz in the NFL as well. Some folks have a short memory or they just ain’t thinking right lol
I could go with any of those guys. My personal pick would be O.J. McDuffie, although O.J. would be not so politically correct, LOL.
Bobby Engram if you are only counting college and what he did here, and it isn't close. Add NFL to the mix and my choice would be Robinson with Godwin 2nd. Both of them have become elite WRs in the pros.

Way to go, big guy! I just watched this 5 times!! I don't know who the best WR was, but I sure loved A-Rob this night!

Good Grief, now you got me watching YouTube! Might as well throw this one out just for the fun of it!!
@mtnittanylion: " The Defense rests its case Your Honor"
Agreed, Southern. I still scratch my head trying to figure out what happened to him after that. He went progressively down hill and never recovered!
@mtnittanylion: I spend many a cold night watching old PSU games on youtube. There are also some pretty good deer hunting videos on there as well. Just for a hoot, look up "Roy D Mercer prank calls" and sit back and enjoy.
It sure beats the Hallmark channel.
@rip. I think BOB had him in an offense that he was good at plus Bob being a great QB coach and when James Franklin showed up changes the offense and all the NFL talent that the greatest joe Paterno recruited was gone Hack got frustrated wouldn’t listen to James Franklin and IMO he fell behind and when you fall behind especially when you have a bad attitude odds ain’t good on catching up at the college and NFL level. Just my opinion bob I can’t prove nothing lol

He got shell shocked by the worst offensive line in the history of PSU. Kid just got pounded after all the seniors left.
Thanks for your thoughts Southern & Roam. What you guys are saying makes sense and you're both probably right. I still can't believe he got so bad and never could recover, even in the Pros.

I draw a parallel to what happened to David Carr in Houston. It was hard to watch, he was getting absolutely killed back there with the Texans. I honestly do think it destroyed him, heard footsteps his entire career.
I crossed paths with Hack a time or two during our days at SC. Let me preface this by saying he's a nice enough guy and very personable and would go out of his way to talk with anyone at anytime. He's a fellow alum and I wish him nothing but the best. I also hung out with and worked out with quite a few football players as well. Their take, and please take this with a grain of salt; was that Hack wasnt willing to put in the time in the film room to make himself into a better QB. It was also said that he wasnt too receptive to his position coach either. One thing I learned in the wrestling room is that if you're not willing to change what you're doing and make adjustments to how your opponent reacts, you're going to soon flounder and fail. While I agree, to a degree, with the assessment that he was shell-shocked; Hack may have also brought some of this on himself. The guys I hung out with were on the D and they claimed that Hack was getting too easy to read and predictable. To Franklin's credit, he stuck with Hack out of loyalty to him and the program. The guys told me there were quite a few shouting matches between Hack and CJF that season and tensions were running pretty high. It was implied that many on the team felt that Trace should have had an opportunity to step in sooner than the bowl game against Georgia. CJF did a great job holding that team together his first year. That locker room was certainly divided to say the least.
Again, this is all stuff I heard in conversations with guys on the team i worked out with and rehabbed with. It's not intended to be Gospel, just a different point of view.
Keep in mind that Gruden praised Hack up and down and gave him rave reviews; before the draft. He also cut him a month after he signed him with the Raiders.
Thanks for your perspective. I guess if you take what you said, along with what Southern & Roam offered, it's a case of all these things coming together in sort of a "perfect storm" that spelled his down fall.
Very interesting stuff Kid. I get where you come from which is basically hear say but if its from team mates there is likely a lot to it. It explains a lot, thanks for your input and will put it in to perspective.
I don’t care what anybody says Hack was a good QB his freshmen year watch him stand in the pocket and he was on the money throwing the ball too. He did have the turnover but he also was making great throws. Dude was good his freshman year.
Unfortunately for Hack, IMO, he was over rated coming out of Prep School. If you have the opportunity to watch some of his camp film and elite 7:7, he had the same throwing technique and tendencies that were obvious at PSU. I think his first year with Bob and having incredible receivers masked his faults. Also I do think he got shell shocked as did M. Bolden.
In terms of best receivers: nostalgia, Jimmy Cefalo, Gregg Garitty.

I think all kids have their faults coming out of High School, and if they aren't as good as predicted those issues tend to become more apparent.
All I can say about Hack is he wasn't throwing screen passes into the ground, or 20 feet over his receivers head, on a weekly basis as a Freshman. By his final year, those types of mistakes were coming a couple times a game. I doubt he had problems throwing screens in HS either, to me that's a clear indication his poise and focus were completely gone and he was constantly worried (either consciously or unconsciously) about the rush.
