1 of every 8 NCAA football players is currently in the Transfer Portal. 12.5% of the players. Over 1000 in the system.
Based on history, 60% of those players will "move down" with their transfer. Power Five to non-Power Five. FBS school to FCS school. Whatever.
If you go into the "Portal", your current school is not obligated to keep you on scholarship or even guarantee that you can return if you change your mind. So going into the Portal has some risks for players.
So in a way, no different then it was in the past as kids could always drop down and play immediately at an FCS school.
I actually like the idea of the portal, but not the implementation. It needs more structure, which would serve both coaches and players better.
