This article proposes that PSU is probably recruiting in the 15 range under JF and loosely correlates the recruiting level to a similar facility level. I've heard that facilitates needed improved but I'd thought we were likely behind maybe 5 schools and in the 6-10 range. He seems to imply we are lower. The number of 5 star players at GA vs PSU is rather shocking and while we can argue that stars don't matter we are fooling ourselves. It represents success in recruiting and if we are not getting 5* that could be OK but we are also not getting 3 and 4* guys we want.
Yea, the Whiteout atmosphere is motivating, you can sell family and some kids want a NE location, the image $ market thing has value, the education argument is in decline, winning is a big deal. Lets just say that some programs overall have PSU beat and we hear no plans. The Sandusky costs made us lose time and $? Or we are just not ready for the $ Football Wars?
I get the argument for better facilities but I don’t like it. The glitter only matters in recruiting. It doesn’t make a player bigger, stronger, or faster. I think the “Arms Race” in big time college football is grotesque. Let me know how the facilities at Georgia improves public education in that state. Let me know how the facilities At Ohio State contributes to medical research at that institution. FCS football programs have moved far away from the educational mission at those schools. I am opposed to my tax dollars funding this lunacy. If wealthy alumni want to foot the bill, so be it.
I am an old school fellow and a huge admirer of Joe Paterno. I do appreciate that time has changed things. However, the tipping point may have been reached and the public may start kicking back.
Miss ole JoePa, but sadly the times have changed, ain't no going back. IMO stars only matter to the extent that the coaching staff develops the potential they imply. I don't see much development from our current coaches under Franklin with the exception of Yurcich. I think he has done a super job in raising Clifford's game. What we really need is an offensive line coach who can develop some nasty blockers. I wish Franklin would have stayed with Limegrover.
You want to hear a truly grotesque stat Sky? Last year division one schools spent over 550 million dollars on dead money, meaning that 550 million dollars paid out to coaches that were fired and aren't even coaching at that institution anymore.
$550 million for nothing.

I saw that. That money could build some athletic fields in cities.
Think it is time to update my resume and get me some of that dead money!
I have always been a proponent of not firing a coach while he still has a contract unless it is for cause (not just not winning enough games). When the coaches contract is up you just do not renew. The problem with that is if a school lets the coaches contract get down to the last year it can hurt recruiting. So schools always or usually renew/extend contracts before the end of the previous one. Therefore you can never fire a coach at the end of his contract. It's kind of a catch 22.
At Cael Sanderson's press conference he mentioned and unintended consequence in recruiting as the result of the NIL. Ohio State and Iowa are having a HUGE recruiting year, Cael not as much. To be fair both schools have always done well in this area but this year especially noticable. If Cael noticed NIL as a recruiting sway in wrestling, I imagine it is more so in football. NIL bad idea.
My hunch is that over time, over time marketeers will learn that there is not much money to be made investing in college athletes; especially wrestlers.
