Two QBs absolutly playing a fantastic games, and one never sees the field in OT because they lose a coin toss. Effing stupid.

Just held my wife hostage for hours watching football today.  She had no idea how the OT worked in the NFL.  She said the exact the same thing and went to bed....right down to the T!

LOL

Exciting game! Was hoping the Bills would pull it off. Oh well, as Bills us fans know, there's always next year!...or the year after.

@southern-psu-fan I'll save you having to pull up a link.

How does Overtime Work in the NFL Playoffs and Super Bowl?

  • Just like in the regular season, at the end of regulation, a coin toss determines which team will have possession first in overtime. Each team must possess, or have the opportunity to possess, the ball, with one notable exception: If the team that gets the ball first scores a touchdown on the opening possession.
  • If the score is still tied at the end of an overtime period — or if the second team’s initial possession has not ended — the teams will play another overtime period. Play will continue regardless of how many overtime periods are needed for a winner to be determined.
  • There will be a two-minute intermission between each overtime period. There will not be a halftime intermission after the second period.
  • The captain who lost the first overtime coin toss will either choose to possess the ball or select which goal his team will defend, unless the team that won the coin toss deferred that choice.
  • Each team gets three timeouts during a half.
  • The same timing rules that apply at the end of the second and fourth regulation periods also apply at the end of a second or fourth overtime period.
  • If there is still no winner at the end of a fourth overtime period, there will be another coin toss, and play will continue until a winner is declared.

Hey both teams knew what was on the line going into OT so I don’t have a problem with the OT. These guys knock each other’s you know what in the ground for 4 quarters they have to get OT over as quick as possible or they’ll kill each other.  The best and baddest athletes in the world baby. Buffalo should’ve stopped’em on defense and they would’ve had a shot or just held ‘em to a FG and they would’ve had a shot. Thanks BT for the info

@southern-psu-fan I said it before and Ill say it again, it s  a lot better than that "Mickey Mouse" crap of putting the ball on the 2 yd line, or 3, whatever the hell it is.....AND  the Bills have no one  to blame But themselves; if you cant hold  a team with 13 seconds to go from their own 25,, you dont deserve to win..AND KC had to drive 75  yds to win, not 2 for the win, the credit goes to Mahomes and  co..So, the last two drives, KC drove 115-120 yards, that's a well deserve win..nothing cheap about that..

And for you guys who dont like the NFL, You dont know what youre missing, that was 2 days of riveting entertainment...Compare that to the CF Playoffs which invariably are duds and blowouts.

@culture-thrives  Bottom line is Tampa or Buffalo couldn’t step up and get the stop when the game was on the line. They tried just couldn’t get it done. You either get it done or you don’t CT.

@culture-thrives : 100% agree with this. Buffalo knew what they needed to do and couldn't get it done.

I like the OT format that the NFL has in place. The team on defense first can do one of three things: Hold their opponent to 0 points and put their offense the field. Hold their opponent to a FG and put their offense on the field. Or, give up a touchdown on the opening possession and lose. It's not like the team losing the coin toss isn't aware of the rules and what's expected of them. This is big boy football afterall.

This argument is lame. "The Bills knew what they needed to do". Yeah, so did KC. Neither team "got it done" and then KC won a coin flip.

@roaminglion  Roam, I’m good with the coin flip but what do you think about the visiting team always goes on offense since they’re on the road? It would be very interesting on home teams not wanting OT

Right, and if Buffalo won the coin flip KC doesnt stop them. See how that works?

IMO Football is a team sport and your logic is only half a team matters. Great "The Bills" couldnt win even though half their team didnt even get a chance. Both defenses show no hope to stop anyone, at least college rules dont just keep an entire half of a team from ever even getting a chance.

Josh Allen had zero chance. He didnt lose anything, he never even got the chance.

@t-hale You hit the nail on the head when you said "this is big boy football"...No placing the ball on some artificial yd marker like the 25 or 2...just continuing the game you just played for 60 minutes....and some coaches have won the toss, put their D on the field first, confident they wouldnt let opponent drive 75 yds, and if they get a stop, just needing  a FG to win..

I havent heard any wailing from the Buffalo camp, to their credit, they knew the rules, this loss was all on them...

I prefer college, because at the end you know each team had equal oppurtunity and one TEAM didnt get the job done. Not just a defense.

Buffalo blew that game by not squib kicking it and burning time off the clock on the kickoff...Should have never gone to overtime...

@culture-thrives : And we probably wont hear any wailing from them either.  They knew they had their chances to win in regulation and couldnt get the job done.  They had 60 minutes to win the game and didn't so lets blame it on a coin toss.

I am not gonna defend the NFL's overtime rules as I think it is a ridiculous way to determine the outcome of a ballgame...The fair way to handle what happened last night was give the bills the ball and see if they can score a touchdown to keep the game going...You go back and forth until a team outscores the other one...I agree each team needs the same amount of opportunities to either tie the other team or outscore them on a drive...The bottom line with that ballgame last night was that Romo was right...Buffalo should have squib kicked the kickoff and ran a few seconds off the clock...The game should have never gone into overtime...Buffalo gave the game away...

@been-there-ii  one team get home field advantage but the other get advantage if the game goes to OT. Sounds fair to me brother

I don't see why people are so against college rules... Both teams get the ball and the offenses and defenses both get a chance to play. What exactly is the problem with it?

@southern-psu-fan Colin Cowherd: College football OT rules are hokey; junior high level

Of course they are..Yesterday was the perfect example of why the NFL rules are better, the Bengals-Chiefs flipped the coin, and played freakin football...Chiefs won the toss, had homefield advantage, everything going for them, Mahomes  took a chance, threw ball downfield, only to be intercepted...Bengals now had to drive downfield  for  the game winning FG;  NO Mickey Mouse run play from the 2..

I also agree with Colin, if they  want to amend the rule to give both teams the ball once, so be  it..I dont think its necessary but if they do, that's fine..And if they do, I would do it for playoffs only...Regular season rules are fine.

@culture-thrives   I’m good with the old rule, flip a coin and whoever scores first wins.
