No, it doesn't work the same way. Here's how it works:With the new playoff system does the CFP committee still vote the same way? With 12 teams I’d rather just take the top 12 from the AP and let them fight it out on the field let the chips fall where they fall! I can’t stand the CFP committee. With 4 teams I like just taking conference champs that would’ve been awesome but the CFP committee screwed that up.
The committee sits down and ranks the teams, but they don't just take the top 12 teams... After they rank the teams, they will look at the top 4 highest ranked conference champions and seed them 1-4. These 4 teams get byes in the first round. If you aren't in a conference, you can't get a bye. After that, the next highest ranked conference champion auto qualifies, so if Penn State is ranked #17 but won the Big Ten, they would still get in as long as 5 other conferences didn't have a team ranked higher (Was supposed to be 6 auto-bids, but when the PAC 12 folded it went to 5). After the 5 conference auto-bids are given, they will then select the next 7 highest ranked teams remaining.
Last year would have looked like this (Keep in mind there would have been 6 conference auto-bids, but since the PAC 12 is gone now there are only 5):
- 1 Michigan - Bye
- 2 Washington - Bye
- 3 Texas - Bye
- 4 Alabama - Bye
- 12 Liberty (Ranked #23, but 6th highest Conference Champion) @ 5 Florida State
- 11 Ole Miss @ 6 Georgia
- 10 Penn State @ 7 Ohio State
- 9 Missouri @ Oregon
If we are taking ranked teams, I'd rather have experts in a room argue about it than a bunch of AP reporters who never played or coached select teams
IMO the season starts in LA on October 12th. If we aren't 5-0 going into that game, something is very, very wrong. @USC, @Wisconsin, and Ohio State... that's our season right there.A lot of questions are going to be answered in week one. We’ll find out if Allar has it or not at WV.
WV played us a lot tougher than most people thought they would and they are going to be improved and fired up to play us again. And then there’s the trip to USC a couple weeks later which is the typical type of game we come out flat and play poorly for a half.
I believe we lose one of those games and possibly the game at Wisconsin along with a loss vs OSU to finish 9-3 and a borderline playoff participant. Our play vs OSU may determine if we’re playoff material or not.
Of course I reserve the right to change my season prediction based on the outcome of game one. Can the QB and WR’s click in game one and can the O’line actually block what will be a WV defense that brings heavy pressure?
I completely agree, they were a good team last year and playing in Morgantown is to their benefit this year. USC’s new QB Miller Miss actually looked pretty sharp in their bowl game, so that’s no gimme either. Luke Fickell is looking to ascend from the mid tier B10 to the top, beating PSU would be a nice feather in his cap, look for them to come out fired up for that game as well.IMO the season starts in LA on October 12th.
