OK so if he gets the job who do we get that comes in and is a SOLID 4 QTR DC?
Pry is also linked to the Louisiana job
VA Tech is probably a good fit and he can probably recruit well at Tech. He'd just have to do what Beamer did, get the best in the state to stay at home and then tap the outliers.
I don't like it. I want someone younger, innovative, creative, aggressive. The Joepa ship has sailed, was a great era but time to move on and evolve and build a winning staff and team.
@navylion There has to be a young smart defensive coach on an NFL staff somewhere. Remember Franklin keeps in touch with coaches at all levels and is always active in seeking out talent. Remember how he found Moorhead. I believe they met a coaches clinic and stayed in touch.
I thought he was coaching at Pittsburgh I didn’t know he got let go. He’s probably still as good as anybody else James Franklin could get. He’s 65 but that doesn’t bother me as long as the defense is good. He’s probably enjoying retirement anyway. I don’t keep up with the NFL like I use to
Before all the old bucks get in a tizzy, first let me say that Joepa has been one of my idols since I was a kid.
I've read just about every book on him, studied his philosophies and management style/mentality. It did a lot for me in life as well as in the Military. I believe i have been a better leader and manager because of it.
I also loved being a fan of a clean and well run program that helped mold not only great football players and students but also great sons, husbands, business men and leaders in society.
I think a lot of those principles are still applicable today and there are still people out there that possess those qualities/attributes. I just don't buy into the fact that a football coach at PSU has to have had played for or worked under Paterno for PSU to retain a lot of those great attributes.

I'd take Scrap in a heartbeat! Not so much because he played and coached under the GOAT, but because he possesses the qualities/attributes that you refer to. In addition to that, I believe he's a great defensive coach and nobody can question his loyalty to his alma mater!
@navylion No tizzy from this crotchety old geezer. These days how many teenagers do you know that would actually listen to what their grandpa tells 'em? Let alone do it? Pass for me too. Too old to related to the kids he'd be trying to recruit.
This may be a name that comes up as a replacement if he leaves.

Gone to VTech, maybe we got a O-Line coach and a player to be named later in the deal.
It's a done deal. Pry to take over as head coach for Virginia Tech. Let the replacement searching begin.

@navylion When Franklin was given his 10-year extension he came out and said the following:
“With the support of President Barron, Sandy Barbour, and the Board of Trustees we’ve been able to create a roadmap of the resources needed to address academic support, community outreach, Name, Image and Likeness (NIL), facility improvements, student-athlete housing, technology upgrades, recruiting, training table and more. This renewed commitment to our student-athletes, community, and fans reinforces all the reasons I’ve been proud to serve as your head football coach for the last eight years and why my commitment to Penn State remains steadfast. Throughout this process, I’ve kept our leadership council, recruits, and staff updated on those conversations and I’m excited we’ve reached an agreement we can finally share with you.”
The section in bold stands out to me. We are going to find out really quickly if they mean what they say. Brent Pry was a good coach, but he also had some areas that he lacked in. For many years it was third down, this year they cleaned that up. What hasn't been cleaned up though, is giving up the big play late in games, or not getting that key stop when PSU needed it most. Again, he was a GOOD coach. Penn State and James Franklin now have the opportunity to go out and get a great one.
Time to nut up or shut up.
