Unfortunately Kyle McCord is the real deal. Ohio State is getting a good one 🙁
Yes, he is. However, like Fleming last year, he will have to beat out other prize recruits for playing time in Columbus. OSU brought in two 4 star QBs last year, they have McCord and another high 4 star QB in this year’s class, and they just got a commitment from the 2022 #1 overall recruit, a 5 star QB. Only one will play. The others will probably transfer when they see the writing on the wall.
That's the thing now with the one time transfer with immediate eligibility! Players will commit to the teams with the highest visibility and if things don't work out will enter the portal and try again. The top 4 - 5 teams in the country will sign most of the elite players but if they don't see substantial playing time their first or second year they'll enter the portal.
We are basically watching a D1 roster vs a high school team. A true David vs Goliath.
This is my beef with the private schools that recruit playing in the same division as pure public schools in PIAA. It’s ridiculous. The private schools should have their own division of the PIAA and just play each other. There are enough of them to make it happen and I had heard that was an option the PIAA was discussing. On top of that, SJP has kids on the team from NJ. Not sure how NJ kids play for a PIAA title?
Not so fast. There is a public perennial team in the northeast with 10 plus state titles. They appealed a classification move up and won. Yes, stayed in the same class. Weakest schedule, collecting trophies and phony accolades rather than playing a more competitive schedule. Way overdue. They get through loopholes allowing top talent to sneak into town and get away with playing jurisdictions. I've heard stories through union guys how it's done and how it's being swept. It will not end until those loopholes are closed and addressed.

To answer your question how NJ kids play in Pennsylvania. Very simple, you sign up for that school, pay tuition. It is a free country. Private catholic schools will soon be a thing of the past. Too expensive, declining enrollment. The nearest catholic school where I live is on the brink of closure. Declining enrollment for the 3rd year. Take into consideration the lawsuits on dioceses. The tuition is being increased to compensate the claims while priests continue to buy 60k cadillac's.

Nothing phony at all about Southern Columbia's championships or accolades. You're just a jealous bitter Spartan.
The McCord kid has got some damn good receivers to throw to. The few highlights I saw, the receivers get great separation and when not they are already making big time catches; some kinda looked like the ones that PSU receivers pulled off saving Hack. I don't know anything about him or the teams they play but if the teams they play are as equally good, then, the kid looks really good. How did Pribula do?
I could care less about NJ kids playing in PA. Go ahead. Overpay for your kids HS education. It’s your prerogative. However, when the PIAA playoffs are scheduled, I think the private schools should be in their own classification. When you have schools like SJP, Imhotep Charter, Bishop McDevitt, Cathedral Prep, Pittsburgh Central Catholic, Bishop Guilfoyle, Archbishop Wood, Bethlehem Catholic, etc being able to recruit kids for athletic purposes, it seems like the public school competition they are playing against are at a severe disadvantage. The schools I named above, and there are others, are routinely in the PIAA championship games for a reason. I think the PIAA should just lump them all together and let them fight it out.
Since you brought up my old school....I"m a proud alum of Cathedral Prep and believe me, recieved a world class education, NOT overpaid. In those years the PCIAA league for Catholic high schools competing in wrestling and basketball were considered way inferior and second to the PIAA public schools. Public schools had the advantage of larger enrollments, larger tax base resulting in better athletic funding. I don't recall hearing any public school grumbling then. I seem to hear the same public schools competing for PIAA football playoffs every year...Southern Columbia, Thomas Jefferson for example. I wonder what's going on there? Non inner city schools with grade school feeder systems in stable populations? Why not make your argument to include a separate playoff for poor inner city schools like Erie High, Shaler, Westinghouse, Johnstown et to compete in their own seperate state championship.....because they haven't competed in a state championship in years. Then again, what's wrong taking home a trophy that says your school is the second or third best state champion in Pennslvania. Ya, I'd be proud of that.
Because of the covid, the 2020 season is abnormal but if you look at 2019 you wil see that of the 12 teams competing in the 6 classifications, only Bishop Guilfoyle, Archbishop Wood and St. Joe's Prep are Catholic schools with Wood and St. Joe's victorious.
Sidenote..Cathedral Prep wouldn't even be in this year's playoff had the last 3 games not been forfeited, they just weren't that good this year.
To be clear linebacker, I really like your posts but I do get tired hearing the Catholic school argument and your mentioning Prep was a thumb in my eye.
I went to HS in NJ and all the state championships for football and some other sports were always separated by parochial and public. Groups 1-4 and Parochial A & B depending on size. No one ever complained and everyone thought it was a fair way to do it.
I believe NJ still does it that way, though they may have made it just one Parochial group instead of 2.
@lakerie Fair points Lake. I didn’t mean for it to offend you personally. I suppose the thing that bothers me is the recruiting aspect of it. These schools have become football (and some other sports) factories. There are no rules preventing them from recruiting and they frequently give tuition assistance to the recruited athletes. It’s like a mini college system. Perhaps this has changed since you went to Cathedral Prep? Maybe the parochial schools didn’t openly recruit back then? But, they do now. And many of the inner city parochial schools do it for other sports also. Basketball comes to mind. It’s funny you brought up Shaler. When I was in high school, I believe Shaler got into a sticky situation because they brought in Dan Fortson from Altoona. Fortson, I believe was ruled ineligible to play for a season because it was deemed by the PIAA that he transferred for athletic reasons. So, why is that different for Trotter’s kid going to St. Joe’s Prep for athletic reasons? Or Runyan’s kid going to SJP for athletic reasons? I just think it opens a big ethical can of worms. As I said, many of these schools are pricey. St. Joe’s Prep is about $16,500 per year, yet the recruited athletes get a break. As far as the educational end of it, they are probably receiving a really good education, however, there aren’t as many support services as some of the public schools in SE PA (like Council Rock or Central Bucks) and the taxes for those areas aren’t cheap (neither is south Jersey), so it seems like it is overpayment to me (if you have to pay for both). Again, no disrespect to you, but I think the playing field may have changed dramatically since your days at Cathedral Prep.
Again lake, my apologies, it wasn’t meant to be a personal insult. Just my opinion. Maybe I’m way off here, maybe not?
Also, for as long as I can remember Cathedral Prep football has been very good. Going back to the 90’s when they had Ed Hinkel and Bob Sanders.
Absolutely no offense take linebacker. I very much enjoy as well as respect your football posts and some on the watercooler too. Fact of matter is that most of the posters here know more about football than I do. I just get somewhat protective around my Ramblers while watching their enrollment grow smaller due to population decline, ever increasing tuition and of course the whole Catholic thing which I am still very dedicated (as oppose to being devoted).
A bit of trivia: BP attends the same school that Tsuga graduated from. Of course when the old man went there they played in leather helmets with no face guards.
@lakerie: Yes sir they surely did. He went to the old school in North York. In fact, when he went there it was called North York High. The named changed to Central later in the 60's and then changed again to Central York in the 70's......I think. The old man is still a bit pissed that his track and field trophy never made the trip from the old school to the new one. It was some award for the 50 yd dash I believe. Also, Kyle Baublitz, a former DE for PSU graduated from there as well. I was a year or two ahead of him I think.
I hope BP sticks with his commitment. Who really knows anymore.
