Exactly! If Grunk wanted to be at PSU, he'd still be at PSU.

Also, just an FYI... Rocco Becht reportedly received significant offers higher than PSU to transfer nut followed MC here. He still got paid, but could have made more.

It's not just the money, especially when a kid has a good relationship with the HC.

I think both Grunk and Rocco are going to do well.

@roaminglion oh yeah I said it was just my opinion. IMO had MC wanted him as his QB he’d be at Penn St. I believe we’re ok with Betch but we only have him for 1 year. Dang roam we were finally seeing good QB play 😂

@roaminglion Well this much I do know...If Penn State wanted to keep him they would have kept him...They would have made the kid an offer he couldn't refuse to stay there...You have no idea why he left and are speculating as well...He may have wanted to stay and Penn State may have low balled his offer...As a former player I can tell you that you know when an organization wants and values you and when your time with them is up...This NIL stuff is real money...A school offers a kid 500k to a million more I can tell you where he is going...To my knowledge there is no cap on what a school can spend on these players...If you think for a second that the Phil Knight Nike money isn't influencing players going to Oregon then you are delusional...Bottom line is if Penn State wanted to keep Grunk he would still be there...

There is your answer as to why Grunk is gone...I have no idea what Becht is getting or what he was offered...I know it has been reported that Allar received in the neighborhood of 3 million last year so I guess it is safe to assume he is in that ballpark...I have no idea what Grunk's valuation is but I am sure it is also safe to assume that Penn State and VT probably have similar offers...The difference is this new guy brought his boy in and Grunk probably right or wrong figured he had no chance to win the job and said screw you and moved on...I have seen this kid Becht ranked anywhere from 7 to 18 with his average around 9/10 overall...I know he played hurt last year with what was a significant shoulder injury...To me from what tape I have seen on him isn't anything spectacular...He appears to be a game manager who will make the average play and protect the football...For me from what I have seen Grunk's upside is much higher than Becht so this guy went with his experienced boy over a young raw prospect with considerably more upside...I think it was a big mistake letting this kid Grunk go...

@the-funeral-director I’m hoping the backup QB is the real deal and if we got 2 QB’s for Grunk it was the right call. The backup was hurt when this deal went down is what bothers me knowing that now I would’ve kept Grunk. We will see.

I hope I'm wrong, but  if my worse fears comes to pass, the 2 QB's from ISU can keep each other company in the injury tent and we'll be really missing Gronk!

@rip if Becht can stay healthy we will be good but if he gets hurt we take a step back. That’s true for all teams and their starting QB but our QB is coming off a serious shoulder injury.

I am hlad they didn't make that kind of an offer. Just like I was glad they did make that kind of an offer to that DE who went to Tennessee and is now skipping practices.

Don't need to spend money like that on unproven kids.

I don't know, Roam.  I wouldn't consider Grunk an unproven kid.  I thought he did pretty good when he was thrown into the fire!~

I mean sure, his largest passing total was 219 yards before the Bowl game. No bad, but not what I would call earth shattering either.

I think he will do well at VT... I also think our QB play will be just as good if not better.

I would say his performance was a little bit better than "not bad" considering the kid was a freshman thrown into the fire with his first games as a starter were against the top defenses in the country...This kid didn't debut against the citadel...His first game was at Iowa then he went to Ohio State then he came home to play Indiana...He progressed to I feel having his best game in the bowl game against Clemson where he threw for 260 yards...And why discount the bowl game? The kid is a freshman and to me highlighting that game is part of charting his growth as a player...I would think a 5th year senior who has been a starter for 3 years would be a bit more advanced of a QB then a Sophomore QB with 7 starts under his belt...My issue with this is from and organizational standpoint...I understand there has been a regime change and when that occurs the new regime brings in their coaches and players...I am from a personal perspective have a split opinion on this new coach...Part of me likes what he is doing on one hand but another part of me really questions some of the stuff he is doing on the other hand...I hope I am wrong about this guy and I am clearly in the minority here...This kid Becht could be the 2nd coming of Johny Unitas or he could be another ho hum QB...This team should at worst only lose 1 ballgame and go the B1G championship Game...I am not sure this guy brought in and attracted the type of talent needed to compete with the big boys...Maybe he is going the Cignetti approach with gritty tough ballplayers building a winning culture...This is gonna be an interesting season...

Enough with "he was a freshman". He was a redshirt freshman and other freshman were playing just as good on other teams.

Why discount the bowl game? Because outside of the CFP all bowls are glorified practices with many players opting out.

I don't see throwing 8 million dollars at a kid for 5 games.

You're in a minority of 2 FD.  You pretty much summed up how I feel.  Hope I'm wrong, but I guess we'll find out when the games begin.

I wonder how much we threw at the QB who led his team to 11th in scoring in the Big 12???

What a load of bull, try again....

"Clemson faces significant player unavailability for the 2025 Pinstripe Bowl against Penn State, with over 25 scholarship players out due to injuries, transfers, or NFL draft preparations. Key opt-outs focusing on the NFL draft include DT Peter Woods, DE T.J. Parker, CB Avieon Terrell, and DT DeMonte Capehart"

Almost their entire defensive line and their best corner opted out, and more transferred or missed the game. Don't make stuff up

Now check the year before, when that QB wasn't playing injured the entire year like in 2025. Oh yeah... they were tied for 2nd in scoring in the Big 12 that year.

I don't know Roam, the Big 12 stats I saw for the 2024 season showed Iowa St #7 in scoring.  In 14 games that season, they scored 435 points (31.1 Avg) which trailed Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, Arizona St, Colorado & BYU.  This was some improvement over 2025, but nothing to be excited about IMO.

@rip I see a 2 loss season in 2026 and unless there’s an influx of blue chip talent in the off-season we will take a major step back in 2027.

With the exception of 3 or 4 guys I’m not impressed at all with the talent Campbell has brought in. It’s like he thinks he’s still at Iowa State and needs to find diamonds in the rough.
