Yep, 'at about sums it up.
Urban Meyer did what he was paid to do. The AD’s & presidents he worked for knew his tactics. This is the new normal in college football. “Win at all costs.”
You hit the nail on the head, Sky.

You say "the new normal" as if the 70s & 80s weren't littered with corruption in college football. Saying that this is somehow different now than it was back then is just revisionist history.
Some kids who couldn't even read were graduating, payoffs were widely known about, steroids were rampant, etc. etc. etc. Why is anyone acting like those days were somehow better in regards to getting an education? Heck, the graduation rates were horrific.
@roaminglion I agree Roam, Switzer, Osborne, Danny Ford and Pat Tie Dye and a lot more was all about winning regardless of what got swept under the rug. Heck it’s probably better today than it was in the 70’s and 80’s
Don't forget about Bobby "shoes" Bowden and yes Roam you are absolutely correct...The well healed boosters and alumni at these schools doled out not only cash payouts but purchased homes, leased cars, jewelry you name it...I actually think things are better today than they were back then...It's much more difficult to get away with any shenanigans than it was back in the 70's and 80's as everybody has cell phones and social media being what it is...I do however still think there is a bunch of shady crap going on with some of these programs...Just look at the Adidas and Nike shoe scandal in college basketball that conveniently has gotten swept under the rug...They nailed Petino and Louisville but the big boys got away with it...They refused to go after the Duke, North Carolina's and Kansas's as they are the sacred cows of college basketball...Big time and big money college sports is still corrupt and they want to protect the sacred cows at all costs...
@the-funeral-director. I believe NCAR told the NCAA to eff off, right? 😂
FD, you would’ve taken them free shoes to and you know it lol

I don't know about NCAR, but Jerry Tarkanian definitely did!
Nobody even mentioned Miami yet? What is this world coming to? Miami was Thug U for decades. You guys are right. This isn’t the new norm, if anything, it’s probably toned down now with all the nonstop media coverage.

You are absolutely right Southern. It drives me nuts when people act like Tom Osborne was some saint. That guy looked the other way for his thug players frequently. Jason Peter, Lawrence Phillips, etc. He’s a guilty as any other coach.
So, Tark challenged the NCAA. Good for him. He was probably cheating, but he pointed out other programs as well and they wouldn’t look into them. I don’t follow basketball too much, but I gotta give it to him, his teams were fun to watch.
@lionbacker99. And another thing that get me 99 is the sports media tries to convince people that Tom Osborne is a better coach than Barry Switzer when Switzer dominated Nebraska if I remember right Switzer was 12-5 against Tom Osborne. Nebraska didn’t do crap until Switzer was out at Oklahoma lol...got to admit I use to love the Nebraska/Oklahoma game that was a great rivalry game very intense game to watch.

Good history lesson. But things have changed. Players now get a stipend beyond scholarships and coaches and administrators make millions. Recruiting is more complex and the amount of coaches and football analysts is astounding! I’m sure you have seen the football complex at Clemson; disgustingly opulent! Franklin says PSU needs similar facilities to compete. Oh, the portal, definitely another change impacting the culture of college football. We all know about kids committing, and then decommiting...and high school players continue being recruited even after they committed. Yes Roam, in some measures things are better. But for sure there is a NEW NORMAL in college football. If players are permitted to be paid legally, the impact will will certainly transcend College Football into semipro football. Each year I lose interest because of what I call the New Normal. Once it becomes semipro, don’t think I will retain the level of interest I even have now. For sure, Joe Pa has been rolling. I’m not saying the way things are now being done is illegal or unethical. It is what it is. But as they say, be careful what you wish for.
Excellent points, Sky. Yesterday was yesterday, today is today. Which was or is better? Guess it depends on your perspective.
@rip. I love every year of Penn State football. Even during the sanction years it was so fun to watch especially when we won because you know how hard the kids were fighting to get the win knowing they were at a disadvantage but they still fought to the end not leaving nothing out there. Of course I’d rather be undefeated but even years like 2020 we were 0-5 at Michigan and they went out there played their hearts out and got the win then we won our next 3 games. The way I look at it is we’re on a 4 game win streak bring on 2021 baby.
@sky: "Each year I lose interest" but yet here you are day after day on a college football forum living out your dreams.

You're absolutely correct, Tsuga. As much as I beech and moan, I still follow the team and enjoy the give and take on this forum. I'm not happy with the direction college football is heading, but I accept what I can't change. I've drawn my "line in the sand" though. The minute they start paying the kids to play (legally), I'm out of here!
So you loved college football when kids were taken advantage of and there wasn't any focus on education whatsoever (kids couldn't READ), payoffs were rampant, etc. etc. etc... but now since kids can transfer, they get a stipend that equals out to the cost of education, and they have good facilities to practice in... that's a bridge too far?
I wish I could have been taken advantage of by getting a free college education, but alas, my athletic prowess wasn't good enough. I had to pay for my degree!

I mean, the fact so many of them weren’t even at a 10th grade reading level doesn’t really inspire "college education".
Also, why is football different? Why do we continually say "they are getting a free education" as a reason to keep them from transferring in basketball and football when it is and always has been allowed in every other sport? Hmmmmm
If they weren't at a 10th grade reading level I think the problem was with their HS! How the heck did they graduate??. Roam, I have no heartburn with a kid transferring. They always had that option. I just think they should have to sit a year. I know that I'm an opinionated old fart, but as I said above, I've learned to accept what I can't change.

Good points Roam. It’s all a matter of perspective. During Paterno’s run, we’re kids taken advantage of? No doubt under Bryant, only winning counted.

Would not say living out my dreams. Compared to other posters, I am an amateur factoring the # of posts.
@sky. Bear was just an old rugged tough coach I promise you he made tens of thousands kids lives better even to this day and the dude died in the early 80’s. We don’t have a clue on what kind of impact coaches like joe, Bobby and bear have on people but I bet it’s big and good. I’m not saying they were perfect but I’m am saying the good out weigh the bad and it ain’t even close.
