That said, the research tends to have a bit of a different focus, and I don't believe they do as much as Big Ten schools. If they did, they would probably have been selected for AAU status a while ago.
You're right again Roam. You peaked my interest so I did some research (no pun intended). I found a ranking of the top 50 research universities. In case anyone is interested, the following is the ranking for #1 MIT, the Big Ten schools, ND, and Pitt:
1 - Massachusetts Institute of Technology
12 - Northwestern
15 - Michigan State
21 - Michigan
22 - Purdue
23 - Wisconsin
26 - Minnesota
29 - Rutgers
34 - Maryland
36 - Ohio State
42 - PENN STATE
44 - Pittsburgh
46 - Indiana
48 - Illinois
49 - Notre Dame
As you said, they don't do as much as the Big Ten, but they are among the top 50 Research Institutions in the country. What really surprised me is Pitt at #44.
How many ACC teams are in the top 50?
7 if I’m looking at the right website lol
How many ACC teams are in the top 50?
There are a total of 6 (7 if you count ND). Here are the rankings:
#9 - Georgia Tech
#20 - Virginia
#25 - Miami
#27 - Duke
#40 - North Carolina State
#44 - Pittsburgh
(#49 - Notre Dame)
Looks like the big 10 and PAC make a little more in money revenues but it’s not that much more than the ACC. That might be why the PAC and big 10 gets left out to try and even the money up just like I said before I read this article. I’m telling y’all the ncaa ain’t going to let one conference hog all the money regardless where it comes from. They’ll do whatever they have to to keep the money close and this is exactly why we’ll never have a true playoffs. Now if the big 10 wasn’t getting the money I’m sure they’d do the same thing for the big 10. The system is rigged to keep the money close between all the conferences. I’ve heard guys on 680 the fan say this and I believe ‘em. It’s like republicans and Democrats, they’re all in it together baby. Joe Paterno also called all these crooks out for years. Joe was for a playoff and he stepped on a lot of toes calling for a true playoffs. Joe knew what kind of crooks the ncaa were.
Never mind scratch all this above because I ain’t going there again lol. My bad
I'm sick of arguing about conspiracies and boogie men out to get Penn State.
I don’t think they’re out to get and one conference I think they are about sharing the money. As far as getting penn st did you miss where they tried to blackmail penn st? They are on record saying we can get penn st to agree to anything we want to do to them for punishment because they are so embarrassed. They took advantage of people that didn’t know what to do and it’s sickening that they did that. That’s called abuse of power IMO and thank GOD they got caught. See when everybody ain’t fired like at NCAR they told the ncaa to stick it where the sun don’t shine.
While we are at it, let’s just list the other Power-5 schools on the Research Top 50 by conference:
Pac-12
2. UCLA
11. Stanford
13. Cal – Berkley
18. Washington
24. Colorado – Boulder
41. Oregon State
43. Utah
Big-12
39. Iowa State
SEC
4. Texas A&M
32. Vanderbilt
33. Florida
By the way, the previous B1G list is incorrect. The University of Minnesota – Duluth is #26, not the B1G school, University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, which is not on the list. So, I count only 11 B1G schools on the list. However, having been around enough university administrators, I can tell you that they would like to see the three missing schools: Iowa. Minnesota, and Nebraska on the that list someday.
It’s also interesting to note that Texas and UNC are not on this list, as much crowing as they do in Austin and Chapel Hill about their superiority to the “cow colleges” in their respective states.
One other note for those seeing the ACC as the promised land for intercollegiate athletics, Maryland left the ACC. A lot of their leaving was financial. But there was also a resentment among alumni and fans that the decision-making was dominated by the North Carolina schools. The same people that complain about anOSU and Michigan in the B1G today would start complaining about Carolina and Duke in the ACC in a few years. I live in NC and I see it. The grass isn't any greener anywhere else.

Sorry about the Minnesota error. I assumed that since the University of Minnesota - Duluth location was listed, the entire University of Minnesota system should be credited. My bad 😥
That's okay. To be honest, I know nothing about the Minn. - Duluth except that they won the Men's Frozen Four last year. I saw a few other schools on the list that I had never heard of before, like Oregon Health & Science University at #17. When you look at the descriptions of each school's research, they are like comparing apples and oranges. Most of the top research schools have Med schools and/or Ag school and/or Engineering schools, but there are a lot of differences in sources of funding, mission, etc.
I'm sick of arguing about conspiracies and boogie men out to get Penn State.
Guessing you're not married Roam. If you were and you're sick of arguing, you know the proper response is, "Yes Dear".
That reminds me of a story. Back during the cold war, the Russians had our embassy in Moscow bugged and we had their embassy in DC bugged. We knew it and they knew it. So, every once in a while, the Russians would send a loud blast of sound to rattle to CIA agent listening in. The CIA was worried that their agents would miss something due to hearing loss. So, they decided to have the hearing of all the agents tested. Sure enough, each agent had hearing loss. However, the hearing loss was at a different frequency for each agent. This had them puzzled for some time. That is, until they decided to have the agents' wives tested and sure enough, each wife spoke at the exact same frequency of the hearing loss. May I paraphrase, "What did you say dear?"

The list you posted is a "ranking" of research institutions, not how much money or research they do. If you look at total R&D expenditures, every Big Ten school is in the top 50 (with a weird exception explained at the end). You will notice that Notre Dame is #101, as I said they don't have as big a research focus as Big Ten Schools (ND spends 60% less than Iowa)
No other conference can claim 14 schools all in the top 50 for spending on research, or even 13 (Nebraska exception). The Big Ten just makes so much money, and spends a lot of it too.

*Nebraska is the exception here, but they are really higher than this. It's actually the controversial reason they were booted from the AAU. Nebraska has a medical school which does a lot of research, it's located in Omaha much like ours is located in Hershey. However, Nebraska has an Omaha campus so "technically" the research $$ counts towards the Nebraska-Omaha campus for expenditures and AAU's accreditation. However, Nebraska-Lincoln is who runs and benefits from it... So it's basically a technicality, it would be like saying Penn State Harrisburg runs Hershey Medical Center... Of course they don't. Nebraska would probably be in the 30s or 40s if not for this nonsense.
