I look at the depth chart and see all the 1st string Offensive players are coming back except for Steven Gonzalaz & KJ Hamler, which means they should be a very efficient & exciting Offense.

The defense unfortunately is losing 7 starters and maybe 8 depending on what Shaka Toney does. I believe however that we have some very capable players that will take over those spots and not have much drop off in our defensive efficiency. I know we need to improve our secondary coverage and hope CJF addresses that issue.

I am really excited with the players that are going to make up our Linebacker corps, I think they can be special group.

I know it's early and Spring ball can change things but it's fun to think about the 2020 squad because they are going to be very good team .. IMHO.

Agreed WNY - might be time for us to start laying out our W/L predictions for next year.  I'm going with 11-1!  Winning all the big games, but letting 1 lesser opponent sneak out a win.

I'll reserve my prediction until after the BW game, but 11-1 seems about right to me, BOB.  It's just so hard to go undefeated, especially playing in the B1G East.

I could see 11-1 this year but only if the secondary is shored up; that porous crap only survives to win another game for so long, and I'd think this year, teams will scheme to take advantage of 3rd and 15 even if it means self penalties at first and goal on the goal line to move it out to 3rd and 15 from the 15. Either way you get a FG and 3rd and 15 increases chances for a TD, lol.

I’m going with 11-1 as well with a Big title but the traditional loss they aren’t supposed to.

I’m thinking 10-2 I’m still a little worried about our secondary but we could win 11 especially if our offense is going to be as good as we think. With Clifford in his 2nd year as a starter and Cain and brown a year older and the new OC teams just might have to out score us.

Your best defense is a great offense and I think Penn State is going to have one!!! New OC, Oline coach and Micah....the King and His court!!  Give him one DE, Safety and MG and that should do it!!

Ohio State is the game for me.  My guess is PSU will be favored in every game but this one. Take the Buck's down and I think PSU can lay a goose egg in the L column!

GO STATE!

I still think championships are won with a strong defense... but the better that offense is the easier it is on that defense.  Big12 and Pac12 teams have proven that all show on offense and no go on defense does not make for playoff quality football.

Oklahoma for example is always very good offensively but never built to stop anyone.  I do not want that to happen at PSU.

On that depth chart I'm excited to see Brandon Smith...

As was the case with Memphis....great offense with skilled players but 542 yards of offense couldn’t do it. That said, I think most if not all the parts are there for Penn State ‘s defense.

My concern still sits on the DL...  PSU needs this group to be dominant up front.  LB's will be and are fast.  I think a few new faces on the backside makes a huge difference there.

Agree about yards... I was never one to worry about the total yards that someone racks up in a game, you could have 1000 but the name of the game is 1st and 2nd down efficiency and TDs.  Yes there are issues if you let a team rack up a lot of yards but if you keep them out of the end zone it's all good...

From a certain standpoint sometimes a really good offense can be a detriment to a defense, or at least make it look like the defense is worse than it is. Depends what you mean by "really good offense"

Look at Oregon in the past... Really good spread offense, but they often scored quickly in bunches and gave the defense no time to rest at all. Their defenses often got completely worn down, sometimes having to be on the field for 40+ minutes of the game. Sure Oregon was scoring a lot, but by the end the defense was just gassed and couldn't stop anything.

At that point, all it took was 1 or 2 stupid mistakes on offense and Oregon would lose the game 45-44 or something like that.

I bring this up because to me it was one of the most frustrating things about our offense the past few years. We'd be winning a game and rather than just running down the clock, we'd snap it with :15 seconds on the play clock almost every down. We'd just leave chunks of time on the clock for no reason, didn't really understand what we were doing sometimes. The OC from Minnesota will be a different philosophy for sure, sometimes they would start bleeding the clock in the 3rd quarter. LOL

Just saying that I don't define a very good offense just by scoring alone. I'd say ours this year was good, but not very good. To be very good next year I think we need to add consistency to our explosive plays. Less 3 and outs and holding onto the ball more will help our defense rest.

3 and outs kill a defense especially if the other team has a goof offense. Oregon was 3 plays TD a few years back and that killed their defense lol

The interception by #8 (Marquis Wilson) to end a late drive by Memphis was impressive.  He appeared to have adjusted to what the Memphis quarterback and receivers were doing during the drive.  Having the intellect to recognize what the opponent is doing is only one factor in the equation - #8 also showed he has the necessary physical attributes when he moved in front of the receiver and made the interception.  I am hopeful #8 will continue to grow, mature and improve.

As far as an unexpected loss in 2020, the boys will play Nebraska in Lincoln.

I believe Nebraska wins 9 or more games this year. Like penn st Nebraska has give a few games away he last couple of years. Their wins didn’t show it but they were better this past year. Frost needs 5 years to fix Nebraska because it was a wreck when he got there.

Scoring is obviously good but relying on explosive plays is not going to beat the best. The top teams have a plethora of tools and use them to methodically move down the field. That not only chews up the clock but also gives the defense time to rest. Memphis relied on their big play offense and they scored but if you take away those, it was a blow out.

2020 is going to be special. PSU will have the best defense in the country and an offense that will possess many ways to score. TRUST me, 2020 is going to be special.
