Does anybody know why what these speed skaters keep their arm down with their left hand behind their backs? Maybe they skate faster I’m assuming or it’s part of the rules. They sometimes have both hands behind their backs. This stuff is fun to watch

To minimize movement and have better aerodynamics. With good form, their upper body should hardly move in the straightaways. They do it mostly to save energy for the end when they go all out. You'll notice their right arm is out on the curves, which is for balance and to build up some lost momentum from the turn.
Since they are on ice, they don't need their arms to maintain momentum like you do when running. However, at the end they start to pump hard as it becomes more of a sprint to the finish.
Likely for the same reason Irish dancers keep their arms down while tap dancing.....LOL...I have no idea.
