Extremes in both parties have completely convinced themselves that the other party is a threat to the country, so much so that doing anything is justified in order to prevent them from gaining power.
Gerrymandering has lead to more and more extreme idiots in Congress, and it's just getting worse. Middle of the road voters have no recourse other than picking which shitty candidate they are voting for, rather than soneone they believe in.
Both parties are concerned with being in power. They are under the delusion that only they can "save" America. That's why compromise has all but stoped and neither side listens to the other anymore.
