With a lineup of 5 freshman and 2 sophomores, PSU takes down OSU in Columbus. PSU won 7 of 10 matches. Erie Prep’s (looking at you Lake!) Carter Starocci looks impressive as a freshman and takes down the #2 ranked wrestler at his weight for the second match in a row. RBY and Nick Lee looked vicious. Iowa is clearly the team to beat this year, but Cael may have this team peaking at the right time. This young team has a really bright future.
Really good observations 99. If you want to have some fun, read he OSU commnents from this board:

Their fans have no confidence with coach Tom Ryan after several top recruiting classes. One comment that sticks out to me is.... does Penn State recruit kids to fit their style and does Ohio State recruit kids that just wrestle like they did in high school? Interesting question and shows how good of a coach and life mentor Sanderson is.
Thanks for the tip of the hat to ECP's very own Carter Starocci. He is a special talent but give much credit to his high school coach(s) and how they developed him.

Comparing a coach to Cael is just a fools errand. Basically just saying " Why isn't our coach the best ever in the business???"
@lakerie Thanks for the link Lake. It’s pretty interesting but, they are having a typical knee jerk reaction by any fan base, in any sport, after a loss. We sound similar after losing to them in football. They should take a deep breath and step back and appreciate the fact that Ryan has won a National Championship, several B1G titles and overall has been the biggest challenger year in and year out to PSU during Cael’s dynasty run at PSU. Of course they are disappointed, but they aren’t door mats. I don’t particularly agree with everything Ryan says or does, but I have a ton of respect for him as a coach and his wrestlers have always seemed humble and respectful. Iowa is a different story. Their fan base is bitter and nasty.
It’s always sweet to smash Ohio State. How sweet it is baby
To bad the younger Lee got caught, that might have been a good match. OSU had 3 takedowns in 10 matches if I read correctly. That is unbelievable.
We have been spoiled, i loved watching Zain simply abuse people and we were always waiting for Bo to do something interesting. It seems Sanderson recruits stylish wrestlers and he also promotes stylish wrestling. It is an interesting sport when wrestled the Sanderson way not the Iowa way. We have a solid lineup yet Iowa is better and everyone getsbto return next year so we are still closing the gap with the same players.
@underlion: I counted 24-3 in TD's but I may be mistaken. I wouldnt rule us out against Iowa at the ships...provided Lee and Nevills straighten a few things out and we all stay healthy.
I dont go on other teams' boards. Interesting take on Iowa's fans. I found them to be very passionate about the sport but they could be brutal to towards an opposing wrestler. Bo used to thrive on firing them up. Fond memories of when he spladdled Brooks for a pin on the center of the mat in HCA. Personally, I found OSU fans to be more obnoxious than Hawkeye fans.....at least the ones in attendance.
Good to see you here kid, I really look forward to your input. I also appreciate linebacker for bringing this portion of the forum back to life, just in time for Big's. Such a weird season because of covid and cancelled duals. This should reek havoc on seeding but the B10 is in better position than the other leagues like the MAC and PAC 12 with so few duals. In paricular I feel bad for the Edinboro wrestlers. With a little luck I think Cael's young team can push Iowa but maybe fall just a little bit short. Who knows though. As for other fan bases, I was heckled by Iowa fans at the 2018 B10 championships and again at the 2019 NCAA's so I really don't like them and as for Ohio State, they've always been pleasant and respectful but I just can't get past their entitlement for everyting Buckeye sports. Anyway, looks like we will be checking in later.
Oh that cagey Cael!! Kerkvliet at Hvy!! And he moves like a 133 pounder. I thought Penn State could move close to Iowa at Bigs and Nationals but I really believe they can pull a NC now. And with such a young team and incoming elite talent, Penn State will own it for 5 years (and counting).
@lakerie: I honestly thought Kerk was done for the year. I dont know what is going on in Iowa in regards to their team as in who's healthy and who's not. They could very well wrestle above their heads at the B1g's and wrestle below their seeds at the dance. If we get a little help from some other teams and get decent seeds, we could be able to win another natty. I'm really impressed with BB at 149 and liken him to Hall when he was a T-Freshmen.
Right. Funny that you talk about BB compared to Hall. He's sort of built like him too, small, compact, vice like hands, hard to score on. BB has displayed his lightning fast double blast but I heard he has a devasting Hall like duck under too. I can't wait for B10's and then for nationals when a few of my old wrestling mates can sit around to watch and pretend we were better than we really were.
In my opinion, BB should get the green light at 149 and make some noise at nationals. I believe he can finish top 4 if everything falls into place. The stud from your neck of the woods Starocci, isnt showing us everything that he has either and I see him making it all the way to the semis and possibly into the finals.
RBY and Lee need to keep scoring bonus points and we all need to stay healthy, rested, and ready to go. Kerk coming back may be a game changer too. If he or someone else can knock Cass out early and someone gets into Austin's head plus Alex once again doesnt wrestle up to seed, Iowa may be in trouble.
WTH is going on when I check out an old article on the bleacher report and find out Harley Race only gets honorable mention on being the best professional wrestler of all time didn’t even have him top 25. Another scam ranking the great Harley Race is top10..period 😡 didn’t even have Dirty Dick Slater ranked that’s a crime man
I don’t have a problem with Stone Cold being #1 but to be fair with the great Ric Flair he should be #2 and they have him #4
Was it 2018 when Bo pinned Myles Martin to lock down the team NC when Ohio State was the favorite? This year reminds me of that. PSU comes in with a punchers chance to win it. Iowa is the prohibitive favorite but with a few things going our way, it can happen. Cael's teams seem to be at their best when the underdogs. I look at the 2019 team when PSU was the overwhelming favorite to win a NC and although they did so in a wide margin, there were a few dissappointments. Maybe in 2019 it was the expectations, maybe I'm spoiled, but this year should be fun with lower expectations and the promise of a 5 year run.
As for Starocci, do you think Cael has him holding back his offense? He reminds me of Ed Ruth...long, covers a lot of body, rangy, cat like speed in space, unexpectedly strong, great reflexes, great arsenal of moves, knows where he is on the mat, really hard to score on.
Hey fellas, I missed out on the MD match discussion. This week got away from me. Busy week. As Lake said, Cagey Cael unleashed Capt. Kerk and what a debut. Granted, the MD HWT wasn’t a contender level guy, but still, he’s a D1 wrestler and Kerk disposed of him with ease. I really want to see him destroy Cass. Cass is pretty quick with his shots as a big guy, but he still doesn’t impress me that much. With Kerk and Bartlett in the lineup, PSU now has 6 freshman as starters. Plus, Brooks is technically a sophomore but could stay and compete for 5 seasons due to the COVID eligibility waiver. Crazy. PSU is going to be stacked again for the next several years. Plus, the next group of recruits coming in are top level guys who will compete immediately for mat time. The competition in that practice room is going to be insane. Luke Gardner deserves recognition. He stepped in at 157 on Sr night and showed a ton of heart and determination. I was impressed and proud of the kid. Kids like Luke who practice everyday like everybody else in the practice room, but rarely get the chance to step on the mat in a dual meet or tournament are the heart and soul of the program. I was happy to see Luke get the start and the win at Rec Hall. Have a good rest of the week and weekend fellas.
One other thing Lake. Your boy Starocci makes everything look so easy. He seems like he is just gliding through these matches with ease and very little effort. Maybe The kid is right? Maybe Starocci has even more in his bag of tricks.
Yes about Starocci but it drives me insane to see the SV overtime matches. I'm prepping myself to not get to tied up in the B10's and NCAA's and just enjoy them as underdogs.
