They actually named Joe number 7.  progress? nooo.....they had to throw in the lie: Paterno was fired in November 2011 for his involvement in the Jerry Sandusky scandal.  Guess the word alleged isn't in their vocabulary.  Why do they need to add that addendum in an otherwise complimentary piece?  But Joe wasn't alone, right below him instead of talking about how great a coach Woody Hayes was, they spend the entire bit talking about him slugging a guy...ESPN= SHIT ....horrible reporting.  https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/page/CFB150coaches/the-150-greatest-coaches-college-football-150-year-history

Fake news!!! Whoever wins the most games and most bowls in big dawg college football is the best,  all the other chit they talk about is just somebody’s opinion. When somebody wins 410 games they can claim to being the best. Most wins, most bowl wins and 5 undefeated seasons were done on the field and ain’t anybody’s opinion!

Right on the money Southern!  I have no use for ESPN whatsoever.  After all, they led the pitch fork brigade in crucifying JoePA when he had done absolutely nothing wrong.

I disagree, wins alone don't tell the whole story. Eddie Robinson wasn't the best coach in history before Paterno passed him at 409.

Bear Bryant certainly isn't a worse coach than Bobby Bowden because he won less games. Ridiculous.

National titles, bowl record, record vs ranked opponents, etc. all go into it.

I said big dawg college football not the Jv level. NC’s ain’t nothing but a popularity contest the only thing we can judge without being biased is win, bowl wins and undefeated seasons which the greatest Joe Paterno did better than anybody when you add all 3 of ‘em together because it was done on the field without anybody’s opinion and that’s just the facts Roam. And did it playing by the rules!

So now NC's don't matter? Okay then.

And sorry, but even wins are "bias" from the standpoint of how hard a schedule you played.

I will say it again, basing the "best coach" purely on statistics alone is biased too. First, you're picking which ones you want to use. Second, you aren't adding any context to the schedule or teams played. Lastly, you say undefeated seasons which goes back to schedule strength. You say you aren't bias, but dismissing NCs as "popularity contests" is just another for of bias.

Sorry Roam, that's all they are - "popularity contests".  ESPN, the other talking heads as well as any interested fan can come up with all the "greatest" lists they want, using whatever criteria tickles their fancy, but there's one fact they can't change.  Mr 409 is the winningest coach in major college football history.  That's what tickles my fancy and makes him the greatest in my book, LOL!

NC’s +wins+bowl wins+undefeated seasons+graduating players+playing by the rules= Joe Paterno being the best college football coach of all time lol that’s some serious math baby lol

That's fine, but don't try and tell me that National Championships... which were and still are the goal of every coach (including Paterno), don't matter. Why else would PSU celebrate after winning in 82 & 86? We wouldn't have if they were merely beauty pageants.

If you want to call them popularity contests... fine. The goal is still to win them, not complain about it 30 years later and dismiss them as insignificant. If they weren't important, so many people wouldn't constantly lamnet about 68,69,73, and 94. LMAO 😂

It's not that they don't matter.  I just don't think they should be the be all and end all in determining how great a coach's career is or was.

You said NC's don't count because they are popularity contests, yet now they do in your next post? WTF stop changing your position.

Note... I never argued Paterno wasn't the best, just that only counting wins and bowl games was a bad way to determine it.

I didn’t mean to make it sound like they don’t matter because they do it’s just it’s just has been somebody’s opinion even when joe won his. I’m with ya roam NC do matter but longevity and winning 409 games matter too. Joe Paterno did both lol. The big thing is 24 bowl wins and some of the great bowl wins he has. The Miami win IMO is one of the greatest wins in college football man that Miami team was stacked.

I did not say they didn’t count I said it was a popularity contest which is exactly what they are but that doesn’t mean they don’t count. Regardless he’s won 2 NC’s.

I am a JoePa guy, but realize they use the term "winningest" coach.  40+ years at the helm, time to accrue lots of wins.  Look at ole Urbs at OSU - how many wins you think this guy would have if he was coaching there for 40+ years???   Now I'm not saying Urbby is a better coach than Joe, not even close, but it just proves that zero quantitative measurement can be used to answer the question of who is the best coach.

"the only thing we can judge without being biased is win, bowl wins and undefeated seasons"

If NC's aren't listed when you say "the only thing we can judge on"... how else are people supposed to take that? LOL

Glad you think they count though. 😆

@bobs-dimpled-chin

When The Bear had the bowl and wins record he was known for being  the best now that joe has it he’s  not. He who wins the most games is the best.

Frank Beamer is not a better coach than Jim Tressel or Steve Spurrier. That's why just wins and bowl wins aren't the only thing you should use.

I think we should borrow an approach from the scam committee and base it on the eye test 😉

This is pretty obvious Southern, you said "the only thing we can judge without being biased is win, bowl wins and undefeated seasons

If you say those 3 things are the ONLY WAY TO JUDGE without being biased, then you are saying nothing else matters because it is biased.

Look at my other post where I said I didn’t mean to make it sound like they didn’t mean anything because I do believe NC’s  mean something but it’s still somebody’s opinion on who plays for the NC. I wa t in the playoffs now so we can try and win another NC. Even now the top 4 teams is just somebody’s opinion

I didn't say Frank Beamer was better than Joe. I specifically mentioned "Jim Tressel or Steve Spurrier"
