A Penn State coach has been nominated for the Broyles Award, given annually to the top assistant in college football.
Tom Allen, the Nittany Lions’ first-year defensive coordinator, is one of 65 assistant coaches across the country nominated for the Broyles Award.
Allen is one of seven Big Ten coaches nominated, joining Illinois offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr., Indiana defensive coordinator Bryant Haines, Michigan State defensive coordinator Joe Rossi, Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi and Rutgers running backs coach Damiere Shaw.
Tom Allen has done a fantastic job in his first year and we had to rebuild most of the defense. Dude has studs to work with but he’s done exactly what he should’ve done. Very deserving if he wins. I copied that off pennlive there’s more if y’all want to read it on pennlive.
He's ok I guess, especially after making half time adjustments, but he's no Manny, lol!
@rip manny was good buddy. Tom Allen does a great job with halftime adjustments just about as good as it gets. Defense is rebuilding this year we should be even better next year.
Just wish he had a little better 1st 1/2 plan. Or maybe it just takes the boys a while to get mean?
Everyone knew the defense suffered some big losses from last year, including 2 tremendous DEs which put immense pressure on opposing QBs and half of an elite secondary.
Even with those losses, we average only 1 point more again (13.5 last year vs 14.6 this year) and 25 more yards a game (250 to 275)
I think Allen has done a great job. It's not as "flashy" as last year but highly effective. Not as good a roster on D either. Also... Manny the year before in his first year was not nearly as good.
