I think it was McGloin, Paul Jones and McGregger. I think it was 2013 when Hack and the kid that transferred in was in the battle for the #1 spot. Does anybody else remember because I might be wrong lol?
I don’t know why this topic keeps getting brought up. It’s water under the bridge and is a polarizing topic. I’m sorry, but saying Jay was a good OC and QB coach is just fake news. He sucked and any other coach in the country would have fired him on multiple occasions. He had his job because of his daddy and it was obvious. He never developed good QBs and many good local QBs went elsewhere BECAUSE of Jay (Henne, Simms, etc). Morelli was a huge recruit and Jay did nothing to help him. I remember when an NFL team took a flyer on him, they called him the most undercoached QB they had ever worked with. If your going to give him credit for ‘05 and ‘08 then you have to also give him credit for all the poor vanilla offenses of the 2000’s. Remember LJ Jr going off after the ‘02 Bowl loss to Auburn saying the offense was vanilla and the other teams knew what was coming? I don’t think Galen Hall had much input at all on the offense, which was unfortunate because he had a ton of success in other places developing offenses. The reference to 2011 is a bit jaded also. That offense wasn’t very good and the B1G was down that year. The Alabama game epitomized the offense in a nutshell. They wasted 3 timeouts on the opening drive of the game. It was unorganized and poorly coached. Fortunately, for Jay, many of those years the defense bailed the team out. BO’B deserves ALL the credit for McGloin. He was not good under Jay. And Devlin was mishandled. I don’t blame him a bit for transferring. In the ‘08 Iowa game, instead of playing Devlin when it was obvious that Clark was still suffering from the concussion he received at Ohio St the week before, they chose to stick with Clark and run the wildcat with DWill. Horrible coaching decision. Just my 2 cents. Well, maybe not just mine:
”That dude was everything a coach shouldn’t be” Mike Mauti referring to Jay.
Mauti was one guy what about MROB and D-Clark giving Jay all the credit for the offense LB’r and you can’t deny the 05, 08 and 09 we 3 of the top offenses we’ve ever had. Morreli was recruited when we were running a prostyle offense because remember 05 is when we sent jay and Galen down to Texas and learn their offense. Had D-Clark been ready to play we probably would’ve have great seasons in 06 and 07, hect we still won 9 games both years running a prostyle QB in an offense that needed a duel threat QB. Go check Florida out when they tried to do that under Meyer...it didn’t work and Meyer got out of town because he was losing 4 games. Jay was learning inthe early 2000’s and he got better and the around 05 and showed on the field because our offenses in 05, 08 and09 were as good as the defense and that’s just the facts. Also playing Clark was the right move because we beat Ohio st on their own turf something we ain’t never done before. We were 8-1 in 2011 regardless how we got there so I’ll just leave that at that but when you’re 8-1 and the only loss is to Alabama you’re doing something right and plus the Tide did go on to win the NC that year so they beat everybody else as well. I do respect your opinion though buddy. BTW some dude on pennlive was dogging jay out for no reason so I had to straighten him out lol. I told him just look at the records and then he didn’t say anything else lol
Who’s decision was it to start Bolton over Moxie McGloin, even though everybody and their brother knew McGloin deserved the start?
Team was 8-1 so whoever made the decision was right. I think it was Joe Paterno. Both QB’s got snaps fighting it out.
Devlin led them in the winning TD drive at the Shoe, not Clark who was concussed. Instead of running the wildcat with Williams at Iowa, they should have played Devlin. Bad coaching decision. Sorry, I don’t have fond memories of Jay and I don’t want to go back to those years ever again. There’s a reason why he couldn’t get a job before or after the scandal.
That was the worst 8-1 team I had ever seen. That had no offense and all defense. And as soon as Joe was fired, Bradley immediately named McGloin the starter.
Disagree Southern, Rob Bolton only lost is starting job because of injury, not because of some great coaching scheme. When BoB came in he was demoted to 3rd string behind Moxie and Jones. BoB released him from his schollie something Joe wouldn’t do. Went to LSU and was a 4th stringer there, couldn’t even make the QB squad at Eastern Michigan where he became a WR. It was a bad coaching decision to keep the better QBs holding the clipboard. If Jay was a good QB coach that wouldn’t have happened.
The other guy in addition to Paul Jones and McGloin was an athletic guy from Virginia, I think. Not McGregor though.
Was it Kevin newsome?
Southern, I believe you are right, it was Kevin Newsome.
I think Joe relented to the staff who wanted Bolton, as I recall.
Exactly right lioninsa, Bolton starting was over Jays Head. It was the right call because we were 8-2 ranked #12 if I remember right. I think Joe was making McGloin work hard because he knew McGloin was the better QB.
I’m telling ya Bolton starting was joe’s decision not jays or Hall’s and like I’ve said it was the right call because we were 8-1 ranked #12. I personally thought McGloin was better.
Southern, Joe made the decision because the staff wanted Bolton and Joe relented against his better judgement. I remember him saying something to the effect do you want a true freshman starting against Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

That’s exactly right lioninsa
