I had the picture in a post but this picture needs to be by itself so everybody can see it 😁 the goat joepa. If we going to talk about dirtbags like Switzer and Osborne we may as well bring somebody with some class in here lol
Love the picture, Southern. I wholeheartedly agree with the fine print!
I know where mine is. Right on the mantle with the stadium and the lion shrine.
Maybe we should celebrate by putting it back when we win our next NC .... Or the coach gets 409 wins.
My guess is it doesn't go back until the cost/benefit analysis says so (Read Mega Doner) ... or the BOT gets loaded with right thinking people.
It's never going back... and I am glad it isn't. I've never been a fan of it, mainly because I watched Paterno talk about how he didn't want a shrine or statue. I would rather honor his wishes and move on, I don't think putting something in that he didn't want was a great way to honor him in the first place.
"Joe Paterno that stands by Beaver Stadium. Paterno disliked this statue. Not because of the craftsmanship or the dimensions or anything like that. The statue and the stone wall behind it and the words carved into the stone, it all felt like a celebration of self, a mausoleum. But even these were not the reasons for Paterno's distaste. The reason was a single finger, the index finger, that the statue of Joe Paterno raised to the heavens. We're No. 1. That's what that finger said. To Paterno, that finger was proof that they never got him, never really understood what drove him." - Joe Posnanski "Paterno"
@roaminglion I didn’t catch put the statue back up I just like the picture and the wins thing. I have a different opinion today on statues because I got put in my place when Jehovah got all over my butt about statues. I believe all statues should be burned to the ground because Jehovah hates ‘em because he know some people will look at ‘em and worship them. Jehovah knows how to spank my butt without using a belt brother I promise you that lol. Burn every statue in the world down to the ground as far as ole southern sees it that way nobody will be tempted to worship ‘em.
Now if somebody doesn’t believe me just go to Daytona and try and remove and burn the Dale Earnhardt statue or go to Atlanta and try and burn down the MLK statue or George Floyd statue and then you’ll understand what ole southern is talking about baby, people will kill you and leave your body in the streets and celebrate that you’re dead. Nothing wrong with having your toys at home as long as you don’t worship them but putting them in public places to have people travel and see and worship that’s what I’m talking about. I know y’all don’t but there is people that will. I’ll guarantee you Dr King would never want a statue of him anywhere because he knew better and it looks like Joe felt the same way about statues of him.
Joe Paterno and Dale Earnhardt are my to favorites but I don’t need to look at statues in awe of ‘em. My 2 sports heroes I can tell you that much lol
I get what you're saying but I'm not against statues in general. I think there's a difference between worshiping a statue and placing it as a reminder of someone who did good things. I know some people worship those things, but when I looked at the Lincoln Memorial I didn't stand there worshipping Lincoln, but admiring him for what he did for this country.
In a way, there's a time and place for statues or memorials.
IMO the reason (mistaken) it was taken down is the reason it should be put back up. I can separate honoring from worshipping.

But should we not honor Paterno's wishes regardless of the reason it was taken down? In the end, he didn't want it and it's supposed to be about him, right?
JoePa didn't want the statue when he was alive and still coaching. IMO it would be appropriate to put it up now that he is gone as a way of recognizing him for all he did for PSU & college football.

Well, when he saw it he didnt like it. Not that it was up when he was still there, but that his hand in the air with his index finger out made it seem like the people who put it there didn't really get what he stood for.
So.... I disagree. To add, he never said he wanted a statue after he left either. He said he didn't want one. I really dont understand how erecting something that Joe stated he did not want is honoring him. Maybe in a museum or something, but if it is really about respecting what he accomplished then I just think we should respect the fact that he didnt like the idea of a statue.
Part of being a public figure is you don't get to decide how your fans honor you and I suspect there are a lot of people that externally say 'you shouldn't have' but internally they like it but can't admit it. And as you see the art is not just a JoePa. Maybe it represents 'We Are' maybe sucess of 'The Grand Experiment'?
I'm wondering what his players would like done with it.
So I disagree with the thinking that having it has a lot to do with what Joe said. He said 'I should have done more' also. On the other hand PSU pretty much dishonored him...what will they ever do to correct that? Ignore he was coach and put his name on the Library?
Disonor him by putting it back? I think not. About the closest you can come to an adequate apology to him and his TEAMS. But they are still 'laying low' aren't they....don't want any negative publicity which is why those responsible screwed up the Sandusky thing to start.
"Part of being a public figure is you don't get to decide how your fans honor you"
If they "honor" you by doing something you said wouldnt like, then they aren't honoring you at all. They are honoring their own feelings about you.
I just can't understand how anyone would think doing something a person said they wouldn't want, is somehow being respectful of them.
Lets be honest, the statue wasn't taken down or isn't being put back up because JoePa didn't want it or like it. It was removed because of the Sandusky debacle and isn't being put back up because, as Underlion said, " they are still 'laying low' aren't they....don't want any negative publicity which is why those responsible screwed up the Sandusky thing to start." That is the thing that really sticks in my craw! I could live without the statue if the powers that be did something to honor the man for his accomplishments and devotion to PSU. Like, maybe name the football field after him!
I agree RIP - I remember a few years back signing a petition to have it called Paterno Field at Beaver Stadium. Wonder if this is still something up in the air to have done or not?

IMO the sports museum on Beaver Stadium would be the appropriate place for it. I think it would satisfy the fans, and I also feel JoePa would have liked it... I believe he was a history teacher, or at least a student of history, right?
I think he would be satisfied with that, a place to learn about the man and what he stood for.
I think they should name the field after Joe and put the statue in the museum...His legacy always was put team before self...No names on jerseys...plane jane uniforms with black shoes...that is what makes it iconic...There is nothing remarkable what so ever about those uni's but yet everybody recognizes them...His legacy needs to be memorialized for all of the great things he did for that university and it's athletics program...In my opinion you name the field Paterno field at Beaver Stadium...Nobody did more to build that university and promote that university than Joseph Vincent Paterno...That is all there is to it...He needs to be memorialized in a very meaningful way...Something bigger and better than some statue...just my opinion...

The library is named after him, and that's a more fitting honor to him than a field would be. IMO
Very cogent point Roam...Very hard to argue with that...
