Just read on victory bell that we might get this dude in the transfer portal. The transfer portal has been good to us lately 😁

While he would be a good pickup, I am more interested in the safety from WVU. Tykee Smith was an All-American last year and is from Philly... pairing him with Brisker would be a big upgrade.

Is Tykee Smith from the Imhotep charter school in Philly? I remember him from PIAA championship game a few years ago, great athlete.
JMO. This idea of building a national championship team through the transfer portal is bad for your sports health. Don't rely on it by any means. You need to look at the big picture. Start of season is nearing faster than you can imagine. We are already in April.
I see a big danger in counting on the transfer portal to fill your needs. IMO coaches can become lazy. What ever happened to developing the talent you recruited? If the raw talent isn't there, why did you recruit the kid? IMO the transfer portal is seen as a quick fix and can be detrimental to the program in the long run. Just some random musings from a "what does he know" fan.
That's another way of looking at it, BT. Probably a smart move. Especially if everybody else is doing it. I really like you're "free agent" terminology. Maybe the NCAA should look into allowing for schools to use a "franchise tag" designation, LOL.
And, there is a reason why they are in the transfer portal...didn't live up to expectations, hit their ceiling in high school, bad attitude, bad grades, etc. Plenty of reasons why they didn't develop. That said they could be the square peg in the round hole.
That's what I'm saying. Look at the big picture overall. How many other coaches do you see relying on the portal strategy? It's not big news. As of now it's just trial and error. OK, so your team landed 5 players from the portal? OK, so what's next? Where is the guarantee playoff spot? If you don't like the players you have recruited then don't play with their heads and mind games.
I don’t think James Franklin is building his team with the transfer portal he’s doing that with recruiting but he is making his team better with the transfer portal we’ve got some good football players in the transfer portal and got rid of some that wasn’t good enough to play at Penn State. James Franklin is working everything to his advantage from what I see.

Blowing it way out of proportion. Franklin is not relying on the portal for anything, we've picked up just about as many as we've lost in the portal. If anything, you could call it roster maintenance at this point.
@roaminglion Ya can't win w/ ol' Tighten. If PSU has players leave, there's something rotten in Happy Valley, seconded by his PSU fan friends at work. If PSU picks up a few players, then Franklin is trying to build a playoff team from other team's cast off players. He swings back and forth more than the pendulum on my Grandfather clock.

I agree but, the day is coming where the philosophy will be, I want a player who can play niw, just like in the workforce, I’m not hiring to develop I’m hiring to get the job done. It’s a sad state of affairs.
He is the problem with the workforce thing. 99% of the time you are hiring an underperformer with SOME experience. There is a reason they are looking for a new job and in most cases it is not because they are excelling with their current company and being under paid! Yes, there are times when you pick up a good person who is "stuck" in a not so good deal, but they are few! BUT, there a lot of times you overpay for somebody who never get's it done either.
There is a reason somebody enters the Transfer Portal and more times than not, it has to do with developmental issues. In 2020, only three players from the Transfer Portal were selected in the first round of the Pro draft...2 QB's and one WR. Five more were selected in the the 3rd round. There are like 1500 players entered in this years portal....if I read it correctly.
So, you best keep coaching and developing IMO. You ain't going to build a National Championship team from the transfer portal. Maybe fill a void here and there, but don't count on too many 5 star future NFL players being available...Unless your name is Fields!

Good for depth, for every kid that gets drafted there are 100 others who don't.
Yes, it will help with depth and they probably picked up some key players on defense that will help!
The way I see it, they have plenty of returning talent, like 16 starters overall coming back. Pair that with apprx 5 guys from the portal that started for their previous teams last year and Penn State should be in good shape. Wisconsin, Ball State and Auburn are three tough games to start with....I am not overlooking Ball State, they are a good squad. BUT, I have them coming out of this stretch 3-0 and if they do, I have them at 7-0 heading into Columbus. I hate to hang my hat on one player, but Clifford is the guy we ALL need to hope turns it on.
Assuming this most recent spike in new Covid cases in PA slows back down, they should get a full practice season in before kickoff. I think we are ALL going to be pleasantly surprised with this up coming season!!

I got my first shot Sunday and I felt like crap Monday I even went to bed before the race was over I felt so bad but I woke up this morning and felt like a new $100💰bill baby ready to go. My shoulder is still a sore but I can tough it out 😁. My wife can’t get the vaccine yet because she was in the hospital for a week with this crap they said it would be a few more months before she can get it but she’s back to about 90% now so we’ll take it.
Bingo! You're right on as usual, Lake.
LOL, you have me blushing Bob. That is a compliment I don't think I deserve and fully admit my football acumen way less than most on this forum. I am pretty good at being a grandpa though.
You sissy! Lol. My in laws are 85 and didn't "blink" on the first OR second shot! I get my second one this Friday...we all got the Pfizer. The Johnson Vac is the one I am hearing MOST ALL get sick for 24 hours and then it is over. Funny how everyone responds differently to any of the Vaccines. As long as we don't grow any extra legs or arms, I think we will be o.k. A friend of mine father was a an immune research doc at PSU for 45 years. He said the worse case scenario is that it doesn't work....I am going with that! My wife is still waiting, she is in the last group, but we are heading to Florida next week and she is hoping to able to get hers there since they opened up to everyone.
IDK too much, but I think we all need to be prepared to deal with this for another year. I am still hoping for a crowd at Beaver stadium, but I am not sure IF and how big it will be this fall. Having the vaccine, I will feel safe going to the games. I still think they need to slow down openings a little until more people get vaccinated. If we could all hold out a little longer, get up over the 50% level, I think we could nip this in bud by summer.
Glad to hear you got your shot! I need that TOP 5 report from you this fall!

No, not true. Not blown out of proportion. When this news first broke out it was like the greatest thing since sliced bread. I even recall an article on it if my memory serves me correctly. Franklin even stood out and mentioned it during interview. SB nation and a few other forum members were jumping up and down about this. The crew I have breakfast with talked about this more than once. They also jumped up and down in high praise. Somewhere along the line things may have been blown out of proportion by the media or Franklin.
Take a look at the news now when you search Penn state football news. It's all about the new hire mostly? They labeled him as the guru doctor from Texas. OK, so who is the head coach ? Seems to me like Franklin sits back and let's his staff do all the dirty work. Decides who gets hired and fired if one little thing goes wrong.
@forum-titan. We won 11 games and the cotton bowl in 2019 and Clifford had a pretty good season and last year regardless of the pandemic we lost our first 5 games and Clifford stunk up the field so imo James Franklin should’ve made a change with the OC if he seen somebody who he thinks is better this year we’ll definitely see if he’s right. James Franklin is usually right.
@forum-titan Hey, it's spring time. Why not go spread your BS on your little veggie garden?
