I am on the fence with this. I think Steven's has more confidence, but I am concerned he will try to run the ball too much.  On the other hand, I am not sure Clifford has the scrambling ability ( right now) to make something happen out of a broken play.  A lot can happen over the spring and summer but I am leaning towards Steven's as the main guy right now.  Having watched them both play, Steven's has has the edge on split second decisions (IMO) which I think is going to be important early on until the Lion's find their groove.

Not sure about all of you, but I am really thinking the QB situation is going to be the determining factor on how well this team does this year.  If Steven's can step in, step up and dial in in early, I think this build a lot of confidence for the WHOLE team.

Go State!!

I have my doubts that Stevens will stay healthy all year long.  Clifford better be ready to step in when it happens.  In fact, Im not even sure Stevens makes it out of spring practice without getting injured.  Look for Cain to come on in the latter part of the season and take over as workhorse in the backfield.  I'm still not convinced that our OL will be where they need to be next fall and fully expect to read on here that: "its been well known that our OL is a work in progress and those close to the program always looked to 2020 as our year".  Heck, some might even have the audacity to blame it on the transfers and those that left early for a shot at the NFL as the reason 2019 was never our year.

I'm cautiously optimistic about 2019.  There are a lot of what if's that need to play out.  I think this year will be a good opportunity for Franklin to show how good of a coach he really is and a better indication of the quality of the staff he has put together.  Can they put the pieces in the right places and develop the youngsters?  We shall see.  Looking forward to  a good year (with my fingers crossed)!

I hope it's Stevens, because he has all the tools to be a truly great college QB. Tall, big, fast, all with a rocket arm and good accuracy. All he needs to do is be good at decision making, which I think he will be.

Regarding Stevens and injuries... I think we all need to step back and realize what he had been asked to do for the past two years. He was in this weird situation where he was asked to be playing a hybrid QB/RB/WR role, which I'm certain he had to do in practice. This, IMO, lead to some of the injuries he had... Now that he will be platooned at QB, I doubt those things will be an issue. And if he had been the starting QB, he probably would have played through them. However, why even risk him for a gadget play. or a meaningless bowl game? Nope, put on the boot and let him heal.

Don't get me wrong, Clifford could be a great  QB too... but for next year it's just something about Stevens that makes me think he has a higher ceiling for 2019.

I agree roam. I’m looking for a great year from Stevens. I’ll go ahead and be on record saying Stevens will be all big 10 this season. I believe he’ll step up just like MROB did and have a fantastic year plus the talent around him is going to be better.

I think a couple of incoming freshmen may surprise everyone. Seeing that the trend for NFL bound guys is to declare 3 years after high school, I doubt Coach Franklin will waste a redshirt year if either fellow is ready.

It would be foolish of Franklin to NOT redshirt at a minimum one of the incoming QB's.  For now there are 2 ready to go (Stevens and Clifford) and I believe 2 others that were walk-ons.  No need to rush these new guys into the lineup.  Assuming Stevens gets the start, Cliff and the others will back him up.  2020 it should be Cliffords job, and 1 of the 2 just recruited will backup him.  Need to see this in a 4 to 5 year window.

I agree BOB but there is a new normal in college football. If either of these guys are as good as some of the recent outstanding freshmen quarterbacks, if Franklin doesn’t play the kid next year, he’ll only be on the field for 2 seasons at PSU.  Obviously if a frosh is not ready,  then redshirting is the way to go.  It certainly will be a fun process to observe for us fans.

I'll be shocked if either of them is as ready to go in 2019 as Stevens or Clifford.  The fact that they're on campus now gives them a shot to see playing time, but if both of them burn their redshirts, that means we've seen some serious injuries at the position.

Agree but what if one of them is as good as the freshman this year from Clemson?

No one has ever been as good as the kid from Clemson, and he was also the highest rated recruit to ever come out of high school.

He's a very, very big exception. Tua from Alabama also only played a half, didn't start and he was the #1 dual threat that year. I mean, yeah there's always "a chance" but...

The new normal in college football is there is no way of knowing how long a kid will stay at a particular school.  He can enter the transfer portal at any time.  So sad for the game.

LMAO, I see the elementary school posting have begun. Have you ever had an intelligent conversation in your life, or do you always resort to just attacking the other person if they disagree with you?

If one of them is anywhere near that good, he needs to start.  But I still say one of them keeps his redshirt.  Especially since the new rules allow a player to play in 4 games without burning his redshirt.
