just read an article on espn about another politician wanting colleges to pay college athletes. If some colleges pay can the ncaa keep them from playing in any kind of championship games? If so do you think the ncaa will do that? Personally I think they are out to destroy college footballÂ
I think you're right, Southern. The push-back against football at all levels has been going on for quite a few years now. Among the leading football opponents have been the "soccer moms". As an aside, I read an article that a local county fair is changing their demolition derby this year limiting participants to mini-vans so as to make the event more "family-friendly"! Maybe NASCAR will be next, LMAO!Â
The whole "pay the players" thing is now just a political chip being cashed in by politicians for votes. To me, it's the same thing as saying free college, free healthcare, and free anything else you can think of.
Just tell people you can give them stuff with no rhyme or reason on how to actually pay for it.

Pleased to learn you are a true American.Â

Good point Roam but we both know ain’t nothing free lol. Hey Roam, I read where Mark Emmert said if a college pays a player they can’t play in any kinds of championship games. Can he enforce that? I agree with him BTW?
What troubles me the most about big time college basketball & football are the salaries of the coaches. 5-6 million dollars plus other money grabs! Most college coaches got lucky along the way to end up where the are now. Top high school coaches are just as knowledgeable and many work year round. I don’t want to ramble on because then I will get crazy and say things that will fluster folks. I’ll leave it with this:  big money has corrupted college sports. 😞

Yes, the NCAA could enforce that. If California and NY pass these laws, the NCAA would be within their rights to bar any school in those states from competing in championships.
Ridiculous! What are these Senators thinking of? I guess anything for political gain. I agree with Emeritt. You get paid, ok then, you can't play in bowl games or compete in playoffs. College student athletes are getting a free ride with a chance of being a millionaire. What more do you need.Â
I just wonder how it will work, considering they would then have to pay taxes. do they get an academic scholarship, and then get paid for playing football? or do they get paid, and from that pay they have to pay their tuition?
because if they have to pay tuition, you need to pay these athletes at least $100,000 a year just to break even from the cost of attendance as well as taxes.
also, is all of the food that's provided and the perks they received taxable as well? if not, why not? at this point they're professional athletes and this is all taxable!
There’s probably only a few schools that can afford to pay the players so what happen to the schools that can’t afford to pay? Like nitnation said if you pay the football players then you should have to pay all college Athletes. Even if the coaches didn’t make 5 million a year I still don’t think it could be done. Keep it as is or there will be a big mess and college sports will be finished. If they don’t want to play for a scholarship and a little spending money go do something else and let the next kid up.

What happens if you're a school that doesn't play Division 1 football, or Division 1 basketball???
Why do those athletes get paid, neither income generating sport is even at their college
Hopefully, they see the light and this paid to play passes over. This will destroy college football. We have an epidemic in this country with HS football and its rapid decline let alone college athletes being paid. It's getting very serious. My understanding is they are working on better helmets, research and development. I won't say anymore because some "know it all" will jump allover this. In my area a few teams are talking about possible elimination of the football programs if the numbers continue to drop. It's sad when you see AAA and AAAA schools with 25 kids on the roster. Pennsylvania isn't the only state. Football is in danger.Â
Here's another thing, I'm using Michigan as an example...
Cost of attendance for an out of state student is $68,000 a year. With taxes, that is roughly $92000 a year you need to pay student-athletes to break even.
They also have in-state students, and the cost of breaking even with them is $50,000 because their tuition is less. However, why are you paying them less... Is that fair?
Anyways, let's just say that two-thirds of the student-athletes at Michigan are in state. All total that is $65 million. If you figure you're going to pay in-state players the same as out-of-state players, the figure balloons to $92 million.
Michigan's athletic budget right now is about $190 million, and their expenses are $188 million. Even with TV money, cutting coaching salaries, etc. you are never closing that gap.
Basically you're putting Michigan's athletic department in at least an $60 million dollar hole every year (most likely more). NOT SUSTAINABLE, no matter how many boosters you find you aren't going to get them to pay for that.
And let me remind you, this is paying the players the absolute minimum amount they need to go to school and break even.
