Fourth and 7 inside the 15, down 6, it is the Citrus Bowl, not the playoffs, not the NC title game, not the Big 10 Championship and nothing to gain other than a second tier bowl title. A Sr QB that has brought his team from behind to win more than once, a true competitor with the chance to be a hero one more time playing in his LAST college game for the REST OF HIS LIFE and Franklin takes him off the field for the rest of his college career......WHAT WAS FRANKLIN THINKING? McSorely and the offense was on fire in the fourth quarter, I was sitting right behind the team and the players were all jacked up full of enthusiasm and when he put the FG unit on the field, THAT sidelines went numb. Even the players not playing knew that was the wrong decision.
Franklin owed Trace that one last chance to be a Home Town Hero and he took it away from a kid who entered us all for 3 solid years!!! And for what reason?
That was a poor decision and he needs to own up to this!
......entertained us
It's not the aggressive decision, but certainly not a poor decision. I would go for it but more often than not I've seen other college coaches kick the field goal there too.
Rather than focus on one decision I'd rather fix the drops and special teams.
Roam, I just don't know right now. I think we have good coaches, but they keep getting out coached/played. I get it! I realize Penn State is very fortunate to be where they are today, but these kids played their hearts out the last quarter and lost again. When do you question the play calling/decisions vs miscues? Kentucky's defense was gassed in the last quarter and Trace was one play away from a chance at another 4th quarter comeback. WHY DO YOU TAKE THAT AWAY FROM HIM?

You take it away from him because you don't coach a game for a player, you coach for the team. He felt it was the best chance to win, many coaches do the same in that same position. While I would have gone for it, I don't feel it was a "bad" choice.
Regarding the punt fake... well, it was there though. If the kid doesn't fumble the ball he gets a first down. Not Franklin's fault the kid dropped the snap. Again, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
inconsequential... go for it, don't make it....still gotta make the stop. Score TD, they still have 4 minutes to get in field goal range for the win. PSu hadn't stopped them but in the fourth and couldn't make the one stop they needed.
Kick the FG, you're down 3 with 4 minutes left. See above, still have to make the stop. Either call was a lose/lose or a win/win. I really don't question the call. I will point out as I did in another thread JF can't win with fans. We all loved that first down run by Miles, it was the same exact play only to the left that DIDN"T work vs OSU
Bill, what's your thought on the fake punt in the first series.
He was playing to win? Pulling out all stops early? who knew the offense would sputter so badly? If it worked, hero..gutsy call, playing to win.....but it didn't so bad call, poor decision, poor coaching.
Agreed ... thanks
Sometimes the better team doesn’t win. The football gods helped Kentucky.
It wasn’t meant to be.

I would agree that the coach is the hero or the dog depending on the game’s outcome but I still can’t get over the field goal decision. Yes, there might have been many critical game junctures but the fg with 4 some minutes is the most glaring (IMHO). They make the fg, defense has to hold Kentucky to score again...miss the first down, defense has to hold Kentucky to score again...same goal/different scenario. The only strategic difference I can think of is since Kentucky holds the lead they might play a more conservative offense. Anyway, I’m still a Franklin fan, just very frustrated with the year, blown leads with Ohio State and Michigan State, a humiliating loss to Michigan capped off with 3 quarters of lethargic effort against Kentucky. I’m looking forward to next year.
