Thought I'd revisit the records since Penn State joined the Big Ten in 1993. Below you will find the list of Big Ten championships in that time, though I use tie breakers for some. For example: Purdue finished in a 3-way tie with Michigan & Northwestern in 2000, but since they beat both of those teams they are the lone recipient of the title for that year.
Ohio State: 9
Wisconsin: 5
Penn State: 4
Michigan: 4
Michigan State: 3
Northwestern: 2
Purdue: 1
Illinois: 1
Iowa: 1
*2000 Purdue beat Michigan & Northwestern
*2004 Michigan beat Iowa
*2005 Penn State beat Ohio State
*2008 Penn State beat Ohio State
*2010 Michigan State beat Wisconsin
*** Some years were impossible to tie-break because all teams did not play each other, therefore 30 Big Ten titles were awarded for 25 years due to co-champions
Also of note, both Michigan and Penn State are tied for most wins against Ohio State with 8. If I had to rank teams overall for their performance since PSU joined, I'd say PSU is #4 with the ability to jump to #2 with a huge year this year.
1. Ohio State (2 NCs, 9 Big Ten titles, best overall record)
2. Michigan (1/2 NC, 4 Big Ten titles, 2nd best Big Ten record)
3. Wisconsin (5 Big Ten titles, 3rd best Big Ten record)
4. Penn State (4 Big Ten titles, 4th best Big Ten record)
5. Michigan State (3 Big Ten titles, 5th best Big Ten record)
6. Iowa (1 Big Ten title, 6th best Big Ten record)
Only 6 teams have over 100 wins in the Big Ten since Penn State joined: Ohio State has around 160, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Penn State have around 130, and Michigan State and Iowa have around 110. Should we win the conference this year, and make the CFP that would put us very close to Michigan at #2... Of course if we were to win the CFP we'd vault them.
Take this with a grain of salt, this isn't how I'd list current strength of teams. Just a view of everything since we joined.
#1 Ohio st
#2 penn st
#3 Michigan
#4 Wisconsin
#5 Michigan St
When is the last time Michigan best Ohio st?
When was the last time Michigan beat Ohio st? Time gave out on me lol
Ohio State has won 13 of the last 14 against Michigan. The only win was in 2011 when OSU was sanctioned. Before that, Michigan's last win was 2003.
That’s why I give us the edge over Michigan
Southern, I said 1993 through 2017 and specifically stated it is for that overall time period. You can't look at recent wins and give them any more credence in this context. You must look at the entire time period as a whole.
Simply stated Michigan has a NC and we don't. The have the same amount of conference titles, and the same amount of wins against OSU. They are 2, no way we are ahead of them yet. Not with that NC. Unfortunately we got screwed in 1994, had that been a NC... I'd say we were #2. But we didn't get it.
If I were to say this century... Yeah, we are in front of them.
I’ll give ya that and I thought about Michigan’s NC after I posted but 13 of the last 14 is ugly.
Yeah, but our 5 year stretch from 2000-2004 was UGLY... LOL
Man, the 02 and 04 teams were dang good we just didn’t have a QB, Mills had heart and he tried his best he just should’ve been a backup. The defense on both of them teams were damn good, NFL talent all over the field.
Yup, unfortunately you need a good offense too. Man, we wasted some serious talent on the defensive side of the ball that's for sure.
