Willie McCovey passed away today at 80.
He played football in HS.....just saying before anyone gets their panties in a bunch or their knickers in a knot.
I was a fan of his growing up. MM in San Fran v MM in NY in the early 60's. To tie it to FB- Stretch would have been like The Stork as LB.
I remember when the Dodgers and Giants moved to the west coast. My grandfather and father were Giants fans, we made many a trip to the Polo Grounds to watch them play. Good memories
Polo Grounds was the scene for many memorable sporting events. I know Dodger fans became Mets fans. They refused to root for LA. Much like Baltimore Colts fans refuse to root for Indy or convert to Redskins fans. What did Giants fans do?
I can't speak for all the fans but my pop and grandpa still rooted for their beloved Giants.
In many ways that makes sense. You want Willie Mays to succeed whether he's in NY or SF. Just talked to a guy who said that the Mets' colors are Orange (Giants) and Blue (Dodgers), cashing in on both fans.
One of the most feared sluggers in the game, I ever saw..maybe a bit underrated being on same team with Willie Mays, but is in Hall of Fame, thus received his due recognition..
The article on Stretch's death today notes his ML debut as of 7/30/59; what they failed to note was that he broke in 4 for 4 against Phils ace, (maybe in the twilight then) Robin Roberts with 2 triples..I was tuned in on radio...and I was tuned in when he hit that screaming line drive to end the 62 world series to Bobby Richardson, giving the Yanks the title; one he never forgot, an inch either way the Giants are world champs..
A real credit to the game, on and off the field..
Listening to a game on the radio.....now there's a pleasant trip down memory lane.
I can recall anxiously anticipating "Campy's" return to the Dodger lineup and assume his position behind home plate. When it didn't occur that year, I thought "wait until next year!"
I still love baseball on radio, on my many trips each summer to the Jersey shore, the radio is always with me
I still remember the days when the only way to take in a PSU game was in person or on radio - no TV!
I don't do ESPN. I still listen to the game on radio broadcast if the game isnt on network TV.
When they started appearing on TV every week was one of the deciding factors to give up our season tickets.
Really?? I thought you gave them up because some drunk, obnoxious fan threatened to beat you up for leaving the game two minutes early.
Would you happen to be alluding to anyone on this board?
Who me?? Of course not. Nobody on this board is that belligerent as to want to beat someone up for something as minor as that; is there?? I somehow thought you once said that some moronic guy got in your face for leaving early and he had to be restrained by his husband. My mistake, please accept my apologies.
I had my season tickets for 44 yrs and only gave them up after the way PSU treated Joepa.
BK: that was when I stopped watching ESPN. When they started raking JP over the coals I stopped watching them and haven't looked back since.
I hear what your saying, Tsuga. I couldn't agree with you more about ESPN. What a waste of airtime!
I was a big Dodger fan back then, Duke Snyder was the man--King of Flatbush. I hated it when they moved out to LA.
Lioninsa are you ready for the game tomorrow? We need this win brother. BTW I’ve always known the dodgers to be the LA Dodgers lol
One of my prized cards back then was of Snider, Campy, Hodges, and Furillo.
