Reggie Bush says Nick Saban can’t handle a level playing field: ‘NIL ran him away’ said he can’t handle not controlling the 5* recruits.

I don't know if I but that, Southern.  I'm sure Slick Nick could get all the NIL backing he would need to keep his 5*s coming!

Now as far as calling The great Nick Saban the best coach ever is a stretch because the nonsense we’ve had on determining NC’s has been just flat out fixed bullshit. Whoever wins the most games is the best and the goat Joe Paterno has won the most games and won the most playoff games. Bowl games are playoff games. Slick Nick is one of the best but there’s been a few just a little better.

Actually I'd think that pro coaches could make the transition in to college ball now with their experience dealing with caps, free agency, premadonnas, GMs/ADs.

And I don't think its about him not being able to deal with NIL etc, fact is he doesn't have to!

I actually agree with Bush on this one...Alabama is a powerhouse but they don't have the alumni money like many of these schools do...The money handshakes aren't necessary anymore as the pay to play is out in the open now...It was an open secret all the bama players were driving around dodge chargers back when this stuff wasn't allowed...College sports has been a festering cesspool for the last 10 to 15 years...You had the Adidas/Nike scandal in NCAA basketball that was more or less swept under the rug because all of the sacred cow programs were involved and the big money didn't want to tarnish the sport as the NCAA tournament is the goose that lays the golden eggs...You had the same thing in football...Why do you think Oregon is all of a sudden getting all these 5 star players? They are being funded by Nike...You will see the schools with the largest alumni associations start to assert themselves and become the new national powers in Football...Saban knows the jig is up for him and he got out while his legacy is still in tact...Big time college football is nothing more than another professional football league...Only difference is they are operating on 1 year contracts and there is no salary cap...The universities with the biggest alumni associations and most big donor money available are going to be getting the best players moving forward...Saban is a weasel but he isn't stupid...He knew the game has changed and the rules don't favor him anymore so he got out...He has plenty of money and there isn't anything in it for him anymore...Follow the money as the big money programs with the well healed and connected alumni associations will be the new power players in college sports moving forward...You will start to see magnificent sports complexes being built that make the current ones look like 3rd rate high school complexes to lure recruits in...This will be a necessity to bring in players moving forward along with marketing and promotional deals for these players in the millions of dollars...You will see these kids making more money than the professional players...This has only just begun...

IMO, the coach still matters regardless the NIL money. A team can have a lot talent/resources but at the Power 5 level, the coach and staff still have to pull it together or not. I guess in Saban's tenure, he was able to pull it together (coaching) better than the majority of coaches who were on equal or better footing when it came to handshake gifts etc.. considering e.g. top 10 wealthiest programs. I think this would be a different statement if there were not other programs doing the same at probably the same level. Just a cup of Joe morning thought.

I don’t know how all this crap works so I’ll just ghetto it down on how I think it should be done. Why can’t the fans and businesses or whoever just donate money and only money that way nothing can be wrote off on taxes if you give money it’s yours to give and split it with all the athletes in the schools. Fans can give a certain amount and businesses can only give a certain amount and if a school is caught getting more money than is allowed heavy sanctions come down. Just trying to make it fair baby because ole southern loves to be fair and share the pie. Just the way I would do it. Can’t a penny be wrote off on the tax payers dime.. PERIOD! Sanctions could be no athletes at a school gets paid for 1 year if caught cheating that way we know it probably won’t be worth cheating if getting no money for a year is involved.

@the-funeral-director  I don’t know FD, Nick Saban took over chit at Michigan St and won 10 games then took over a struggling bad LSU team and won a NC and I believe he was at Miami 2 years and he had a winning season one of those years which ain’t bad considering Miami stunk when he went there and trust me Alabama was average at best when he got there and the wins just don’t lie at the end of the day. Nick Saban is one of the all time greats imo.

I just read the QB Cam Ward is going to Miami and not the NFL. Must be getting a big check?

I hate it when former sports stars looking to be relevant say stupid things, especially this, from a guy causing USC in to sanctions in 2010 because of his actions. Just stupid.

@rip  Nick Saban’s track record speaks for itself. Dude was awesome and college football is better with him in it. Just my opinion

When you inject College Football with No salary cap and unlimited free agency, are we really surprised when one of the great college coaches who failed miserably in the NFL walks away. Saban’s departure is a microcosm of College Football slowly morphing into the NFL.

You're right on.  Unfortunately, the morphing is going to quickly for my tastes.  NFL lite is already here in my opinion!

So in the first few years of NIL, Saban has pulled the #1, #2, and #1 recruiting class in the nation. Been to a NC game, made the playoff again this year, and generally kept on chugging.

But somehow people have convinced themselves he "couldnt compete" with NIL and that's why he retired... not because he's 72 yo.

Lmao, people are funny.

Saban took over a 6-10 team and went 9-7 his first year. Some bad roster management had them 6-10 the next year and he left. A year later with that roster they went 1-15 without Saban.

Also, it's been reported that he became disenchated and ultimatly left after being pissed they didnt sign Drew Brees. He wanted him, but the medical people said no. Brees's agent even confirmed he called and apologized for not being able to sign him, and offered a refrence if they needed one for New Orleans.

I wouldnt say that is failing miserably. I thinknit's more he hated the front office and their horrible management of the team... so he cut bait. Cant say I blame him, and it certainly wotked out for him.

9-7 first year as a NFL coach with a team that’s not that good ain’t bad. Saban was just a better fit for college and he likes the college game better. I’d say being 72 was 98% of it like Roam said. Oh he signed nine 5* players last year and around 5 this year I believe.

According to my sources, the reason for Saban's retirement may be that his wife has Alzheimer's. OK, so my "sources" is a biking friend that is a huge Bama fan.

If that's true. it's a shame to have to retire for that reason.  More importantly, prayers for old Nick and his wife.  It's gonna be the toughest game of his career.  She's lucky to have a man like him to look out for her.

The Alabama players always drove nice cars so clearly those handshakes had an impact.

But at 72, Saban is tired. I also think he doesn’t want to end up like Joe Paterno where Joe should have voluntarily retired 10 years earlier.

Sky, From 05-2011 we probably had more success against Ohio St and Michigan than we ever had since joining the big 10 and we were 4-2 in bowl games and won the big 10 2 times. Sent quite a few studs to the NFL to. Just saying
