Yea, Cliffy did some nice things in games where the outcome was not in doubt. But he's still a pocket QB and I'm not sure Rahne has the ability to originate a gameplan that was not a knockoff from JoMo and the RPO. Does Rahne go more run offense with the stable of backs we have? I'm concerned that Cliffy may not be the answer with Rahne as OC. I'm fairly certain my concerns are not unique.
They had a pocket QB at Vanderbilt and that QB did pretty dang good. Different offense though

I think you hit the nail on the head, Navy. Personally, I've always been more concerned about Rahne's capabilities as OC than who the ultimate QB would be. My way of thinking is that Stevens' health is still a question mark and that Clifford has the potential to be very good if Rahne adapts his play calling to take advantage of his talents.
His injury is what I think tipped the scales. CJF may have learned that recovery might not be complete, ever, and that TS could play in the fall, but not to the level as previous. If that is the issue, TS may have a difficult time finding a D1 landing spot. Again, no facts to base this on. Opinion only.
If they feel Clifford is the best QB, then he should play. My point has always been I felt the coaching staff has had 4+ years with Stevens and should have just sh*t or got off the pot by now.
Yeah, I get that other coaches do the whole "won't name a starter until fall" thing too, and in certain circumstances that makes sense. However, IMO... in this case Franklin isn't going to find out some new information about Stevens in the next 4 months, or in 10 fall practices that he doesn't already know. If it was an open competition, just be upfront about it and say "there is no starter" heading into Spring. He didn't, he said Tommy was the in the #1 spot heading into Spring, and coming out of Spring apparently he's not anymore and now it's: "...we are not ready to do that right now (name the starter) and it’s going to need to be more of a true competition"
So... before spring Tommy was at the top of the depth chart, and after spring it now has to be "more of a true competition"? IN MY OPINION he's basically telling Tommy he just lost the starting gig he had before spring... and I don't think that's a great way to inspire someone. Again, IMO
Here is a new thought for ya'll about this. We all know and agree that competition brings out the best in players. Coach Franklin could be testing Tommy by saying a starter has not been determined and that they must compete to earn the spot. So ... player A can look at this as a challenge and work real hard and earn that spot, or ..... cry about it and look to play elsewhere. If this was the "challenge" that Franklin laid on the feet of the QB's - I see someone who FAILED miserably.
I agree bob. I wish Stevens would stay and compete for the starting QB position. I’m kind of disappointed he’s leaving and not putting up a fight because you should have to earn what you get.

You could also say Stevens looked at it and thought "Why are we still playing games? If I don't have your trust by now... I'm never going to have it so maybe it's best to move on"
I have no issues with Franklin choosing Clifford, but just feel it could have been handled better.
The decision to favor Clifford as the number 1 is based on his performance in blow out games and practices. I never coached FB so I can't say that the "sample size" is or is not big enough to anoint him as the presumptive leader heading into the fall. I've coached baseball and know there's a big difference between practice players and game players. Bottom line is that I'm not sold on Clifford, yet.
I am navyjag. He had some nice throws last year and would’ve had a great spring game if our receivers caught the dang ball. Im upset with all these drops and the season hasn’t even started yet lol. We’ve got to get that crap cleaned up.
I think Clifford will do a good job. We can only hope so because at this point, he's the best option IMO.
