I am viewing this bowl with a half glass full perspective, it will provide the younger players an opportunity to play against a good opponent, it will provide us (the fans) an early opportunity to see some of the youth that has been only utilized in situations where the outcome of the game was decided. FWIW, I am more excited now than I was earlier to see some of these kids.
@merrymonk I agree with 81. I pull for Penn St football regardless who the players are. I do love the Penn St players but the white helmets, blue and white jerseys and black Nike cleats come first even before the coaches. I loved Penn St football before I even really knew who JoePa was. I’m excited about seeing the younger guys but I do wish the others were playing but I’m not mad at ‘em for not playing, business decisions lol
The entire situation stinks. Major sponsors of these bowl games aren’t going to fork over millions so coaches can evaluate younger players for next year. The departure of so many players across the country has devalued non tournament games. Increasing the number of teams in the tournament is going to happen.
Do these guys sitting out get money from agents? I’m assuming some do that might be another reason to opt out? Just guessing though
Pretty sure the agents get paid by the players, not the other way 'round.
@been-there-ii I’ve heard of agents giving players money before they get a contract?
Man, we “fans” sure can be a fickle bunch. Some bitch and moan that there are too many bowl games and “participation trophies” then turn around and bitch that insignificant games are being cancelled. Some complain when players disappoint. Then complain when they opt out of bowl games. Seems like some are just looking for a reason to complain.
@sky We all know this comes down to money. As long as TV pays for the rights to televise the games and rabid fans still buy tickets, bowl organizers don’t give a rat’s ass what name is on the back of the jersey.
@southern-psu-fan Give or loan? And what kind of money are you hearing that they "give"?
@southern-psu-fan Ok, I bite. I did a quick look, can't find anything about agents paying perspective NFL players before being drafted. Do you have an actual written source or is it rumor on the streets?
I think they call it an "advance" in the trade. Made as an enticement to get the kid to sign with that particular agent. Also, I don't think it's actually publicized. More like under the table. The agents don't want their competition to know what they're offering so the price doesn't skyrocket. The last thing the agents want is a bidding war, LOL.
@been-there-ii Reggie Bush? It could be a loan BT I’ve just heard of agents giving gifts and money to players. Didn’t Curtis Enis take something from an agent and Joe didn’t let him play in a bowl game? I’m gettin old BT I can’t remember 😂
Let’s get a 16 team playoff and the playoffs are the only games Seniors can play in all the other bowl games are for freshman, sophomore and juniors lol. 99 I love bowl season because there’s always a game on during the holidays lol
@southern-psu-fan Let's face it southern, college football, the post season specifically...is a mess..Its being talked about a lot today, all negatively, with the playoffs 2 days away, and people fed up..One article said wake up college football...something is wrong when players opt out of the Rose Bowl...THink of that, and all that game entails....PASADENA, the parade, the Granddaddy of them all, KeiTH Jackosn...I could go on..NIL, transfer portal, grad transfers, opt outs... NC ST coach said NCAA, stands for NO CLUE AT ALL
These opt outs have to end, these guys are given 4/5 yr schollies, not 3 yr 11 month scolliies or 4 yrs, 11 months. If they want to abandon their team on the cusp, for some teams their biggest game of the yr, sit out the whole yr..
I dont have the answers but will say this Let the power 5, and a few other select teams pull out from the NCAA, its a disaster, totally inept, and incapable of handling the landscape...AND as Coiln Cowherd said today, just like the NFL, the sport needs a czar..They desperately need a person IN CHARGE to run it...
@culture-thrives could what’s going on today hurt the NFL down the road? The NFL could fix this by doing away with the combine and just scout the bowl games. Just guessing brother I don’t know what to do either. Next man up is the way I’m looking at it.
I also read the Pitt QB is sitting out the peach bowl one of the best bowls. I don’t get that one since won the ACC. 99, you said you had a tough week a few weeks ago I hope everything is good your way buddy.
@rip NFL caps the agents commission at 3%. Not sure they (agents) could keep the players quiet about now much an "advance" which agent was offering.
@southern-psu-fan Thanks for asking Southern. It’s been a few tough weeks. Lost a 45 yr old cousin to COVID. The last 24 hrs have been a whirlwind. I won’t bore you with the details, just that I’m looking forward to 2022. It could always be worse. There are others worse off than we are. I appreciate your asking. Stay safe and Happy New Year!
It's funny that fans always complained about too many bowls, and now we are complaining about players opting out of them like they matter.
@lionbacker99 sorry to hear of the loss of your cousin. Gone at 45 is way too early.
@sky We all know this comes down to money. As long as TV pays for the rights to televise the games and rabid fans still buy tickets, bowl organizers don’t give a rat’s ass what name is on the back of the jersey.
My point exactly. Ratings will go down resulting in decreased revenue. The money guys will give a rat’s xss about that.
