It seems a 12 team proposal is the most likely option coming for playoff expansion, and multiple reports say it's likely to happen... and happen soon. The most widely supported option includes the following:
1. The 6 highest ranked conference champions: Note: this does not include an auto bid for any specific conference, just the six highest ranked ones. So all conference champions are put into a pot, and the 6 highest ranked get the bids while the others do not.
2. The next 6 teams are wild cards, basically the 6 highest ranked teams overall.
3. The conference champions get the higher seeding, and the top 4 get a bye. This means the #5 seed and #6 seed will be conference champions and playing the lowest ranked wild card teams.
4. The first round of games will be played at home fields. So while the top 4 get byes, the next 4 get home games.

Sounds interesting - At least it'd be better than what we have now.
Wow, I am surprised. I thought everyone on this forum would be all over this topic.

You got that right. For how many times we have heard the moans and groans coming from the big bellies dragging and bouncing off the ground.
Man I’ve been so busy at work I’ve only had time to like what y’all post lol. I was only for 8 teams but I’m really liking the 12 team better because teams could lose 2 games early and get better as the year goes I watched Florida St do it many times in the 80’s and 90’s 12 is great for me. I’m headed to Panama City in the morning for 8 days then we’ll head to the lake from there for another week it’s going to be fun baby. Ole southern here will be eating good for the next 2 weeks. 😁🇺🇸 I got to go get all the yard work done now y’all have a great day and Let’s give the Lord Jesus some thanks this morning
I personally still would have liked 8, but 12 is much better than 4. I think at 8 you had enough that anyone from the Power 5 claiming they were left out was easily dismissed by saying "should have won your conference". Now, with 6 conference bids getting autos it at least gets a "Group of 5" team a guaranteed spot, and possibly even more than that.
I'd be interested to see if conferences start going away from a title game, because now it doesn't seem all that necessary. Especially for the MAC or AAC, where you could have a high ranked team lose in an upset... then no one from the conference gets in because the champion has 3 losses and isn't ranked high enough.
I agree with getting rid of the conference championship games a d just take the top 12 teams but if it’s an eight team keep the conference championship games. It looks like it’s going to be 12 and like you said it’s better than 4. With 12 teams go back to the old tie breaker on who wins the conference and if there’s a tie in a conference more than likely both teams will get in anyway.
Interesting fact: Penn State would have made the playoffs 4 of the past 5 years under this new system. 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.
I know I am in a small minority but I liked it when #1 played #2 and you had like 9 months to argue about why you thought your team was robbed. I just don't see why we are so infatuated with national championships. These young men give so much to their schools that asking them to lose more time away for school and risk injury for a couple of more games is just wrong. I do think the bowl games should be 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, 5 vs 6, the whole way down the bowl list. Rotate who gets which match up within the bowls. this is just my opinion, maybe not that of management.

I've heard this argument before, and it doesn't ring true to me. Seems to be trying to say that we're making kids suffer by playing 2 or 3 more games and it's all about them... but then when you think about it, what it's really saying is this: We want a bunch of kids who gave their blood, sweat, and tears all season long to sit and watch another team get to play for a championship because... "we want to argue for 9 months about which kids got screwed over"
@roaminglion I did not state an argument. I stated what I think. I think we need to de-emphasize the championship. I did enjoy when PSU won it's two championships but it just is not that important. Again, just my opinion not looking to convert anyone.
Well said 81. That's what I like about this forum. Gives everyone a chance to say what they think. I know a lot of people don't agree with some (most?) of my posts and that'a fine. I just appreciate the opportunity to vent sometimes.
Oh I know, certainly didn't mean to imply anything other than I've heard people saying the same thing. As someone who competed in sports, I just hate the idea of some phantom judges deciding my fate. Rather play the best, and college football seems to be the only sport we do this in.
I hope the playoff proposal goes through. Hopefully it will shut up the Arm chair players.
Will the teams with a bye have an unfair advantage?
Will the teams with a bye have an unfair advantage?
Probably some advantage, but it's better than no one even getting to play those 4 teams which is what we have now. With 5 major conferences, independents, and other conferences 4 wasn't enough.
