I think of it this way: For years all of us have been lamenting the ridiculous amount of bowl games, so just view it as the players basically saying the same thing. Why put your body on the line for some bowl game that is only being played for TV money. Who cares.
For the more major bowls, I think their days are starting to be numbered. In the past, they were meaningful and meant a lot. The world was bigger, going out to the west coast to play in the Rose Bowl was an amazing thing for college kids. Now? The world is smaller, simply going to the west coast isn't a big deal anymore. There's nothing special about it, it's a plane ride. Big Deal.
The pageantry is gone, and has been for a while. It's not the players fault, it's just evolution. Back then each conference felt like their own nation of schools, now they are just partners in an athletic conference. It feels different, and it's time to adapt. I'm sure if you ask coaches and players about going to the Rose Bowl, they would give you the lip service about how cool it is. However, back in 2016 you can't convince me that our players were not exactly thrilled about not playing in the CFP.
No one cares about winning the Big Ten for a chance at the Rose Bowl anymore. They want to go to the CPF, full stop. Winning the Big Ten is bragging rights, nothing more... winning the CFP is what matters now, and it should reflect that. 8 / 12 / or 16 teams, enough living in the past. The bowl games are relics that hold a special place in fans hearts, but not the players... they don't care about them.

Their isn't 42 bowl games that hold a special place in fans hearts. THERE ARE 8 !! And that is the problem. Bowls used to be a reward for an outstanding season. Now in typical millennial fashion everyone gets a participation trophy.

I blame Hack.
All these guys opting out at the last minute is like the most beautiful girl at the dance leaving and she farts on the way out.
Here's my 2 cents:part of me says "with a 7-6 record, we never deserved to be in that bowl game in the first place. Maybe the players feel the same way". And yet another part of me says "let the younger guys get a chance to get some playing time"
In all honesty, I wont be watching the game anyway. I've stopped supporting or watching anything on ESPN way back when they eviscerated JP and PSU on a daily basis.

Yes, I meant the major bowls... not the small ones. As for the major 8? If they arent a part of the CFP those are participation trophies now too.
@tsuga: farting as she leaves the room?? That's a different analogy.
