No one here is surprised, pretty much the entire state knew Oregon was going to get hammered today. A bunch of announcers were talking about how Oregon's ranking of #11 was way too high. Got annihilated last year by a physical Utah team twice.
Georgia is also good.
Georgia is also good.
Thus why people thought the Ducks would get hammered.
Kirby said Georgia had better players and he’s 100% correct. What’s scary is Georgia is breaking in new players but they did have their starting QB coming back. That’s why I was expecting us to beat Purdue down we had our starting QB coming back. I believe our problem is not sticking with the best RB and get in a rhythm on offense. I may be underestimating how good Purdue is It was the first game on the road on Thursday night. We need to go out and put 4 quarters together and beat the chit out of Ohio next week and get this offense playing with some confidence. These next 2 weeks will tell us a lot on what we have. The Purdue game was a good win and it’s good seeing the team win when most people probably thought they were beat. Bottom line is we’re 1-0
I think what will rear its ugly head for us is; weak D'line, lack of speed at ILB positions and the secondary having to cover; that is not sustainable for winning games that are a tossup and/or having to play out of your scull to win.
RB wise, at this point, I'd line up the guy that is simply jacked up, no fear, and just flat out gets it and punishes the tackler. There is a point where as a defensive player gets tired of having his chops handed to him by an RB. Hell who knows, maybe that would inspire the O'line to start laying some snot bubbles.
Coaching wise, I give up, lol.
Another thing, if Clifford don’t stop turning the dang ball over I’m going to drive up there and put my foot up his ass!
Clifford is what he is and isn’t going to get any better. I think we’ll have a new starter by seasons end.
@psujoe: he can't get any better but he sure as hell can get a lot worse. I think we see Allar take over after our second loss.
@southern-psu-fan Why would it matter that we had our starting QB coming back against Purdue? So did they, both QB's were 6th year starters.
I'm hoping for a blowout against Ohio so we can see more of Allar, would love to see him get a decent amount of game action.
@roaminglion because our starting QB is surrounded by 4*and 5* players just like Georgia. The Purdue QB is surrounded by mostly 3* players. I said before the game Purdue can be a dangerous team to play because they’re usually pretty good at QB and they have very smart players but we should’ve run over ‘em just on talent. I’m satisfied with the win just like always but I’m not seeing 4* and 5* talent play on the field but it is just the first game and the game was on the road on a Thursday night. We need to put an ass kicking on Ohio this week before we head down to auburn.

I was just listening to my BWI podcast that I listen to regularly and they were claiming that Allar clearly won the starting job this summer and that last minute game winning drive saved Cliff from being demoted for game 2.
I agree that we need to see a lot of Allar on Saturday.
. We need to go out and put 4 quarters together
Seems like eternity since that’s happened which is a lot of why I get so frustrated watching this team. Also seems like basic fundamental football skills have been lacking since JF has been here. It’s always a struggle when we win and just plain ugly when we lose.
Keep the faith guys. Cliff is a baller and in my estimation, he ain't going to the pines unless he gets hurt or screws up royally. I'd like to see more of Allar before I can say he should take over. Does anybody know how he would handle taking the hits Cliff has? I don't. Let's see how it goes this week. Hopefully Cliff and the offense will build off that final TD drive and pour it on against Ohio. Then we can see more of Allar and have a better idea if he's ready to take the reins away from Cliff.
That's my thinking, Southern. I do think we should get Allar as much PT as possible to bring him along, just in case.
This is ONLY my opinion!!! I don't think Allar could have made that same winning drive against Purdue last Thursday night. I definitely liked what I saw while he was in, but 6 years of knowledge at Penn State vs 1 series is a big difference! To throw a pick 6 and then drive your team right back down the field for the winning the TD takes an experienced QB and I am not sure that is in Allar's bag right now. I would like to see him get some game time reps with the first team Offense which means we can't be tied with Ohio at halftime!! LOL
Now - just for the fun of it!!! I wasn't impressed with Ohio State's defense again! Personally, I felt we faced a better QB against Purdue than they did against ND. I think Penn State can score points against them if Cliff is ON. Ohio State's offense does concern me vs our Defense. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think their top receiver was out and that probably would have made that game a lot worse had he been in.
Penn State has a long way to go, but I still thought all in all they played and brought home the W ( this time ) instead of leaving it behind again!!
GO STATE!!!!
Good points MNL. Experience & overcoming adversity are powerful teachers.
Yeah I have to say I want to see Cliff move on but given the circumstances, it's better knowing the devil in the details than not sometimes. DA should be a good one but I'd hate to see the kid have a miserable game due to inexperience, but sometimes it is what it is; and while he has a cannon arm, I don't know that it is rifle accurate over the long haul right now.
As far as OSU and Stroud; the big concern is his speed and elusiveness to be able to throw accurately. I just don't think we have the D'line that can contain him on the run and when the secondary gets inpatient and moves up, that's gonna be a big problem if that becomes the scenario.
Remember, we got the stops at the end of the game when we really needed them.
Cliff was named B1G co-offensive player of the week along with the Nebraska RB.
True and based on the last drive, understandable, but had that drive not been executed, his butt would be on the chopping block. All you have to do is go back a read through the live game responses to see what folks on the board thought/think about Cliff. Jeepers, how many of you actually gave this team a chance after Cliff's last INt?
I tend to look past the latest greatest accomplishment for some things and look for patterns as I prefer to look at things for the long haul not the flash in the pan. Here are the patterns as I see them that have been fairly consistent that hopefully get turned around starting by building on the success that came out of last week's game:
Cliff gets injured and where is the back up or do we have one. I think there is adequate back play now and not just b/c of DA, but two other QBs as well.
Game clock management, by all accounts, they got their ass in gear on that last drive..
Scratching your head play calling...
Adjustments...
O'line...
Soft zone D or just blown assignments...yeah the D stepped up, but you can't make stupid mistakes and expect to get away with it if that's the percentage..
I'm not getting exciting over last weeks drive; it's been a long time between then and Trace's heroics against Iowa in 2017 and all the shenanigans' in between. I want to see consistency going in the direction of improvement and a solid expectation that we win games vs I hope we can pull it off. I will say, when TM was QB'ing, I honestly thought this team had the chance to beat anybody, that kid just freaking committed to the cause and refused to go out losing; that's what I like to see in a player; win, draw or lose.
Enough of my yapping for the day, lol!
At the end of the day this can be a galvanizing win for us, hostile enviornment and great experience for the youngsters. It's a good thing when you go on the road against a decent team, don't play particularly consistent, but still get the win. Why? Because no one thinks they're all that now. The players see they can be beat if they don't work their butts off. They can't get comfortable, every week they need to be on.
We will see if that message resonates with them.
