I just heard on nPR news that the dude from Amazon made 85 billion dollars during this pandemic and as long as he’s paying his fair share in taxes I could care less more power to him but where do you put this kind of money? How can you keep up with that kind of money? Sorry I was just wondering. I believe they said he’s worth 185 billion lol

Must be nice but having that kind of money. Comes with many unknowns.  It can all be gone or nearly gone in a heartbeat. There is no guarantee southern.  All it takes is one bad day of luck. I'm sure you know of the great depression.  Read up on it.  Investors,  bankers were taking their own lives when they found out the stock market crashed.  They went to bed rich and woke up poor. Just in a matter of 1 day. Can it happen again? It sure can. Look around. I went to pick up lumber last week.  A few 2x4s and do you know what I paid for it! Complete craziness going on.

He better watch out Southern because there are a lot of people out there that would like to redistribute his wealth!

@forum-titan: I can only imagine what you paid for lumber.  I put up a shed at my place back in Sept and was shocked at the prices.

If they are smart they will set up a trust so that their family will be protected from financial worry for generations to come.

It's ridiculous.  It was 8.74 for one 2x4. Sad part is that there is no end in sight. There is a major shortage.  I was lucky to find a few decent ones with no major crowns or bows. Shelves were empty. You can buy engineered studs for less money. Engineered studs are straight as an arrow.  Shocking? Isn't it? A guy I know cancelled a contract for a home build in march.  The price of build increased 25 thousand.

@forum-titan So obviously it's not a good time to be planning some home renovations. I was hoping to do some things to this house next spring and put it up for sale by summer. I'd swear I can remeber 2x4's being $1.25 not too long ago.

And there are some that would like to see him get a huge tax break and have the middle class make up the difference.

A buddy of mine recently got hired as President of a company in Maryland that does high end construction for the ultra rich and he's shared some pictures with me of jobs they've done. One house he was at in the Chicago area had a room that had 6 cars in it, 2 Porsche's, Lambo, Maserati, Pagani and an Aston Martin.

He told me no Subaru's allowed.

He'd pay nothing in taxes because that isn't what he made, it's just the worth of his stock. He owns Amazon and the stock price went way up during the pandemic. He doesn't pay taxes on it unless he sells some shares. It isn't liquid money, it isn't his salary.

I have projects also. Same plan as you.  Selling in near future and moving to greener pasture.  About 35 miles south.  Somewhere where there are more businesses and things to do. For the time being I am happy but things are not changing in the township.  Most likely going to build. Gathering ideas now, shopping around for a reputable contractor that takes pride,  not some hack .

I am NOT a handyman but have kind of a nutty project going on now and would appreciate some input. We are on our 3rd dishwasher and opted to have it installed by a plumber because the old one was tiled around it and I didn't want the aggrevation. Apparantly the plumber didn't either as he had to break 3 tiles to get the new one in. While I'm confident I can replace the broken ones with spares left over, we wondered if we could somehow create a "floating" tile space that could be removed in the event the dishwasher needs repair or replaced again. The plan is to lay down cement board fastened to the floor board with screws. If the elevation is correct, then lay the tile attached to the cement board with 2 sided tape and grouted in. In the event work is needed on the dishwasher area I can remove the grout, pop up the tiles without breaking them and remove the cement board by reversing the screws. Does this sound unlikely to work or does it have merit? Any ideas? If so, let me know here then take over to the watercooler board.

The sad thing is his company pays ZERO taxes in most states...That is as in the number 0...It is disgusting...You and I pay more taxes than many of these multi billion dollar corporations do...The really sick thing is the oil companies make approximately 45 to 50 BILLION dollars every quarter and not only don't pay any taxes but they get subsidized to boot...The average working guy in this country is a sucker...They keep on voting against their own interests in election after election...I mean why would you want a living wage and healthcare? I just shake my head...

No offense Southern but any working man that votes republican is a fool...Everything that party does is for the ultra wealthy and businesses...I really don't want to get into politics as I think both parties are crooks but the republican party takes the prize...they have no problem giving 1 Trillion in tax breaks to billionaires who don't need it but yet won't give 2k to people that really do and don't get me started on health care...

Unfortunately FD, what I have realized the last few years is that many Americans aren’t intelligent enough to make decisions for their own benefit and aren’t compassionate enough to care about others. It is a pretty sad revelation for me. Take care of yourself and Happy New Year!

@lakerie  For what it's worth, sounds like a workable idea to me. You must use your dishwasher a lot more than I do. I've only had two in the last...35 yrs or so. Got rid of the 1st one 'cause I wanted something a little quieter (lol for once I not talking about the ex) Went with Bosch for the new one; very quiet, does an excellent job and has the sterilization cycle built in. Not that you were looking for dishwasher manufacturer suggestions.

Thanks for the input been there. Yes, our original dishwasher worked just fine but the MRS. wanted an update which meant buying  matching new appliances... refrigerator, stove, microwave and dishwasher. After 7 years only the stove is original as the other 3 crapped out. What does that say about the quality of appliances these days? Of course the replacements have to be the same manufacturer line up in order to match. What a scam and of course the replacements didn't get any cheaper.
