They would like to stay independent and still play against Big Ten / SEC / PAC 12 teams. But if the SEC and the Big Ten reach 20 teams each, then those conferences will probably look at having their schools play more conference games and fewer out of conference match ups each year. If this were to happen, then ND could be shut out of match ups that they currently enjoy having.
Let them schedule best of 7 against Army, Navy & Boston College.
I am betting ND is part of the Big10 by close of business this coming Friday. Just betting!!
GO STATE!!
As our society becomes more secular and woke parents increasingly send their children to non-religious schools ND will become irrelevant.
I know I'm a dreamer and it will never happen, because........as always, follow the money. I wish all the conferences would band together and instead of courting the Iwish, they'd blackball them! Just leave them on the outside looking in as just desserts for all the years they've arrogantly (and greedily) clung to their cherished independence.

I have the same dream but surely falls into the category of “dreams that don’t come true!”

Christian high school enrollments are up nationally, not down. Most people don't care about the religious aspect of schools, even when they are not religious themselves. If they provide a good quality education, then people will send their kids there. ND is the same way, most people go there because of good academics, not because it's run by french priests.

I stepped back and checked myself for feeling the same way, and realized something... We're all mad at ND for basically adhering to tradition, while also lamenting the devolution of college football for NOT ADHEARING TO TRADITION. LMAO.
It's kinda interesting when you think about it, Notre Dame is the one we point to as being the arrogant ones... yet we're in a conference that joined with the Pac 12 in an "alliance" less than 1 year ago, stating we wouldn't take any of their schools. Then we arrogantly decided we're a better conference than the PAC 12 and screwed them over by taking USC and UCLA (after giving them assurances we wouldn't). All the while trying to convince ourselves that Notre Dame are the "arrogant" ones, just because they don't want to join our conference.
@roaminglion Haven't liked ND for as long as I can remember. I'm "grandfathered" in so to speak. Betting Bob is too.

Can’t disagree with anything you said. Especially true is parents send their children to Catholic Schools because the belief is they are better than the public schools, not because they love Jesus. FYI Roam, the biggest rise in Catholic school enrollment was when desegregation was mandated in the south and students were bussed to create a pluralist student body. This whole woke thing still has to play out. I am really referring to 30 years from now when our current grade schoolers are parents. Again, good points, Roam.

Right again BT. In NEPA where I was born, grew up and still live, you're either a Penn State fan or a Notre Dame fan. Any old timer will tell you you can't be both. We're, as Hillary infamously said, a basket of deplorables, lol.
