A man once climbed to the top of a mountain and while he was up there enjoying the beautiful scenery he happened to look down on the ground and saw a snake approaching him.  Due to the fact that it was rather cold on the mountain-top the snake was rather lifeless and lethargic and though shivering profusely from the cold begged the man to take him back down the mountain.  The man responded with "how do i know that you wont bite me when i get down?'.  The snake replied, "you have my word".

Sure enough the man grabbed the snake and started back down the mountain.  When they got half-way down, the snake became a bit more active and the man decided to put him down there and continue back down the mountain alone.  "Surely you're not going to leave me here" said the snake, "it's still rather cold and I might die right here.  I gave you my word I wouldnt harm if if you took me all the way down, remember?"

Upon reaching the bottom of the mountain, the man released the snake and the snake promptly bite the hiker on the leg.  As the man sat dying and dazed on the ground he exclaimed to the snake " but you promised not to harm me!"  The snake replied as he crawled away  "you knew what I was when you picked me up."

Buckeye Nation: you knew what Urban was when you hired him.

I've heard it as the frog and the scorpion. When the scorpion bites the frog halfway across the river, he asks "why did you do that, you will die too when I drown" to which the scorpion replies "I'm a scorpion, it is in my nature"
