Pry has put in his dues and this would not surprise me if it happens.

Agreed, but would it be a smart move right now with all the garbage about potential violations etc being reported? Seems kind of risky for a guy who has never been a head coach IMO.

UPDATE to article as of 1PM: According to FlightAware.com, the plane was scheduled to head to State College, Pa., home of Penn State, later Sunday, but that trip was scrapped. Beekman was scheduled to head back to Lansing shortly after 2 p.m., and he's due back in mid-Michigan after 3 p.m.

Risky situation for anyone.

Why would a coach like Fickell jump into that mess, he has it great at Cinncianati and can afford not to take it.

Pry would be crazy also to jump into that mess but if he does and keeps the programs head above water it could look great for him, like Bob coming to PSU. A lot less to lose for a coach like Pry IMO.

I prefer him to stay at PSU

If he does take the job ... who's left nationally to take over for him?

According to one on this board we keep hiring discount coaches because we are cheap.  That would imply that they are not good but somehow they become good while at PSU and they are marketable for higher jobs.  Even our grad students.  At leasg James can develop coaches 🙂

So Mt Nittany, I recommend you for the job, at a discount salary of course, and 3 years from now you can be a head coach in the SEC .

But seriously, as an old fan it is concerning how much turnover we have now.  Seemed nobody left Paterno, maybe they were not that good, maybe the 'package' was appreciated.  Maybe it is the times we are in, young people leave jobs for a 3% increase.  Does anyone just want to be the offensive assistant coach?  Does everyone want the head coaching job?  I guess at the major college level the pay difference is at least 5x as much so take the deal to be a head coach, even if you fail you don't have to work for a while until the next gig.  At first you feel like it is James but it is just ghe way ghe world is, loyalty to a school or coach is not what it was in the Paterno era at PSU.  There will be very few Paternos, Beemers, Frys, Bradleys, Ganters, Johnsons in the future.

College football is very dynamic now, with portal and coach turnover you never know who you have 'on the team'.  And yet we keep selling 'the team'.  Reality is we are selling opportunity for fame and fortune?  There is less team than ever?

I don't think people realize that most times you don't get assistant coaches to make lateral moves, mostly you find someone who is at the same position at a "lesser" program or someone who is working their way up the ladder and ready to take a higher position than they had previously.

When it comes to coaches, it's rare for assistants to leave for the exact same position and prestige somewhere else. It does happen, but rare.

I think you nailed it underlion.  This is the way the world is today and we're not going back.  I'm a firm believer in loyalty, but it should be a two way street.  Sad to say, but look what loyalty got JoePa, Bradley and Johnson.

True...

Why a mentioned a guy like Reeves at UAB.... Lateral step as far as DC but a much bigger step in conference/competition.

Yes he can that goes along with his ability to develop players.

Agree it's the times we are in.  The old guard coach is gone and new young coaches are replacing them.  No, IMO most coaches want to get to the top as a HC so moving up that ladder will cause turnover.  Nothing to get excited about it's how experience is gained.

No, never at first thought it was James.  He is a great coach and a great mentor for others.

There is always a team, but like you said times change.

I think it's a sign of the times we are in... In the past, it was respect your elders and loyalty was paramount. Wait your turn and get rewarded. There's something to be said for that, but there's also something to be said for the way younger people look at it as well.

The way they look at the past is this:

"Respect your elders" - is all well and good if they deserve it, but younger people today aren't going to respect you just for being old. You need to earn their respect, and simply having an older birthday doesn't mean they will respect you by default. They'll give you a chance, but your character is what matters to them.

"Loyalty" - again it's all well and good but why should I wait to get my chance just because you had yours already? They don't understand why anyone would put their life and career on hold just to wait until someone retires and they "might" get the shot. To young coaches, loyalty is good to a point but why would they wait for a big payday (it's a job and their family's future) just because?

I think that's the difference between 1950 and 2020... Older people were revered by default, and people waited their turn to move up. Nowadays people think respect is more earned than given as a birthright, and loyalty to your family (and yourself) and providing for them is more important than loyalty to a company.
