I've introduced many kids to college coaches because I see them play. I do scouting of players. I do talk to at least 2 or 3 college coaches on a daily basis. They know we are familiar with the players.
Of course local reporters would help recruits get noticed and help them out. It benefits both parties. A journalist has relationships with the staff, and can make introductions or talk about prospects. Penn State staffers don't just find kids out of thin air, they have many avenues of information and johrnalists are certainly one of them.
Also, it benefits the journalist as well because if local kids are getting recruited... I would imagine that increases readership. Not to mention the journalist gets a reputation of being someone who can facilitate introductions.
Now, I am no journalist.... But I would imagine that ACCESS is probably the most important part of the job. Networking and knowing the right people gets you the stories. All that said, I am sure it just feels good to help local kids out as well.
Merging, websites. Same thing. Colleges have salaried scouts and recruiters of their own.

Yes and no Southern. Because of our extensive knowledge of high school athletes in Pennsylvania. Football. many college coaches have suggested we build our own recruiting website so they can lean on us for information on players so .......Stay tuned
