@psujoe I know you like the OC from Oregon and you said the OC from Ohio St would get the fan base excited so I’m assuming you’d like him as well  and we were talking about Rhule and Schiano and you said there’s guys that’s done more with less and with them 2 OC’s you don’t get better talent today than they do and imo Rutgers is as about as low as you can go and Nebraska has t been much better the last 10 years. I took what you said the wrong way, my bad.

@southern-psu-fan And there are guys that do more with less than Ruhle and Schiano. The coaches at Louisville, Cincinnati and Iowa State are just a few.

More with less is commendable, no doubt and is easy for mid level teams.  That doesn't mean that a coach that can get more with less at that level can do what it takes at OSU.  PSU wants more with what we have which has got to be top 10.  We want NC shots so more with less isn't what we really want.  We want results equal to our inputs?

And that’s why I don’t want Ruhle and sure as as hell not Schiano

@psujoe I’ve heard good things about the Iowa St coach but as for Cincinnati we see how Luke Fickle is doing in the big 10 and remember how good Cincinnati was when he was coach there. My son just told me the Missouri coach is high on the list?

I’ve heard that too. I need to figure out how to tune these coaching rumors out for a while. On the way home from work they said on the radio to expect the hire to happen around 12/10.

I don't see a 12/10 hire happening with any coach going to the playoffs

@the-funeral-director Exactly! As Remoh pointed out, Franklin was getting way better results w/ his helicopter than Schiano was getting w/ his private jet. Not sure what perks Rhule has in his contract. Neither one recruited better than Franklin and he got fired, so why even entertain the thought of either one coming to PSU?

@been-there-ii Schiano and Rhule will recruit better at Penn State. Both teams they coach are rugged scrappy football teams. Penn St will recruit very good regardless who they hire but a guy like James Franklin is a home run because he’s such a good guy.

@southern-psu-fan Brother are you smoking something that will get your CDL taken away? Rutgers rugged and scrappy? Rutgers parties like they won the superbowl, if they get invited to a lower tier bowl game. I'll give ya Nebraska has improved a bit, but far from the top. Rutgers...is still Rutgers.

@the-funeral-director me too! Matt Rhule is a good coach and has the chance to be a great coach given the right opportunity. I give Coach Day a lot of credit for turning that team around and winning the NC last year but that coaching staff was about to get fired after the Michigan game. The dude ain’t proved anything and we can’t afford to miss on the next coach. James Franklin wasn’t a miss or bad hire he just fudged up recruiting a QB that didn’t fit what we wanted to do on offense and he was too stubborn to pull the plug. I’m pulling for Terry Smith but I’ll be excited to get Rhule if it happens. I could care less about getting the fan base excited big picture is to get ‘em happy and winning makes fans happy. And it turns my stomach he’s an Ohio St dude anyway 🤮 you give Matt Rhule or Greg Schiano the Ohio St players and they’d win a NC and both are Paterno guys!

So now we are blaming the recent QB being a Pro-Style QB for his over 12 year record of not beating top 10 teams? My lord Southern, you have a hard-on for blaming Drew Allar

This is one of the premier football programs in college football...A top 5 job...
I mean, I love Penn State but fans can be delusional. Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson, LSU, Alabama, Georgia...

There are six schools of the top of my head with amazing facilities, rabid fanbases, and all have won 2 or more National Titles this century.

Think we are a "top 5 job" all you want, but that is based on your love of Penn State, not anything an incoming candidate would look at. Have some perspective before you make statements like that.

I would say the Penn State job is somewhere between 8-15 nationally and that’s pretty much backed up by where Penn State has finished and recruiting classes have the same finish. The problem with the Penn State job when it concerns landing a premier HC is the next coach won’t have 12 years to get it right. Kraft has made it clear he wants a National Championship and his job now rests on that decision by firing Franklin with such a large buyout. The problem is your asking the next guy to do something that hasn’t been done in 39 years with a top 15ish program on a much shorter timeline, if I were a premier coach weighing my options the expectations vs the reality of the program would give me pause.

What brought on all this talk that every coach that has experience at PSU is the greatest ever? Maybe we should just round them all up, pay them whatever they want and then find them a spot on the coaching staff. We’d be assured of winning the national championship every year.

Just because they were Paterno men, doesn't mean they have the same philosophy, nor does it mean they bring us a natty. The world has moved on and the old school coaches are just that, old school and out of touch. Not saying some of the academic qualities shouldn't be adhered to, but then again, it's semi pro or pro ball depending on how you look at it. So why bother w/ classes and graduating?

I think the argument is that Penn State had to go a different direction in the after math of the scandal. Enter James Franklin, an East Stroudsburg graduate who came up coaching in the south. Now that the James Franklin experiment is over, there are supposedly hundreds of alumni and donors withholding millions in donations because they want to see a “Success with Honor” model return to the football program, hiring Matt Rhule, a Paterno player, I assume represents a return to a traditional form of Penn State football operations. What Joe I believe and many others are arguing that College Football has evolved way past Success with Honor.

Penn St ain’t hired a Paterno guy but ya’ll act like that’s all they’ve done. Bob or James Franklin is Joe Paterno guys. We hire  Ohio St DC and some of ya’ll thought he was the best thing since sliced bread and he’s been shit so far ain’t on the same level as manny or Tom Allen. It’s easy to look like a great coach when you have the best players.

Is that evolved or devolved?  Either way, it's sad.

I’m not sure how many on this forum understand the power struggle that’s been going on at PSU for years or the definition of the term “Paterno Guy” .

Who cares ?? Either way we need to stop hanging onto the past and pretending we are morally superior. Embrace the new era or get left behind.

Just say no to Matt Ruhle

Unfortunately things are about to get way more complicated when Florida and Florida State become available. I have a feeling Michigan could open up too.
