The Auburn record in 2015 was 7 - 6 and their record in 2016 was 8 - 5.  In the Fall of 2017, Gus Malzahn was on the hot-seat after a 7 - 2 start with Georgia and Alabama looming on the schedule.  However, victories over both Georgia and Alabama resulted in Malzahn receiving a new contract with a value of approximately $47m.

I have, on occasion, used the events in the late fall of 2017 to troll the grads and fans of both Auburn and Alabama with whom I work.   To do so, I contend that Coach Saban deliberately lost the 2017 Iron Bowl because it was his only viable path to the 2017 College Football playoffs.   The contention is based on the following assumptions / points of discussion:

  1. If Alabama won the 2017 Iron Bowl, Alabama would have faced Georgia in the SEC Championship game.
  2. The Alabama team was not prepared to face Georgia in the SEC Championship game due to injuries to key players.
  3. If a 0-loss Alabama faced a 1-loss Georgia, the winner of the SEC Championship game would have been the only SEC team in the playoffs.
  4. Georgia was the superior team at the time due to Alabama players not being available due to injury.
  5. Therefore, Coach Saban deliberately lost the 2017 Iron Bowl. By doing so, his team was prepared to play Georgia in the National Championship Game which was the SEC Championship game that should have been played in December.
  6. As a result, Coach Saban not only recorded another National Championship, he got Auburn to spend another $47m on a coach that was on the hot-seat for most of 2017.
  7. Low probability assumption: James Carville will agree with this theory.

This can't be true! Roaminglion person argued with everyone on this forum when they hired him claiming it was a great hire and Lovie is an elite coach.

What are you talking about? He's talking about Gus Malzahn and you start babbling on about Lovie Smith and Illinois? WTF?

Also, I find it amazing that I was able to argue with everyone on this forum about Lovie's hiring 2 years before the forum existed. Seriously dude, you need help.

If Lovie Smith was on the same playing field of talent he could compete with anybody in the country but the big 10 will make sure that won’t happen it’s Ohio State and Michigan and screw everybody else.

If James Franklin does make a DC change I’d take Lovie Smith in a minute as DC. I know it ain’t going to happen, just saying

That would be an awesome move! He was a great DC. Why you say it wouldn't happen?

I don't Remember Roam having an opinion about it one way or the other. I DO remember going back and forth with Murray cause he thought it was a great hire and I thought it sucked and he'd be gone in no time.

Guess I'm the prognosticator.

Damn Tae, that's rather impressive. What are your thoughts on the grassy knoll theory??

Yes I also remember Murray being involved but it was definitely I that first predicted Lovie's demise.

I don't have a well-developed opinion with regard to the Grassy Knoll theory.  I was in the Dealey Plaza in the of Spring of 1989 with a couple of Army buddies.  Our visit occurred during a night of revelry which included the Dallas Alley so my memory might not be reliable.  As I recall, the area was small and confined which made it a good ambush site.  It is interesting that Lee Harvey was taken out shortly after being arrested.

Long time back I was in then what was the Dallas Block area. We went over to the School Book Depository where you could go in and stand at the window from which Oswald took the shot. As a kid watching the whole deal as it occurred I had the impression it had been quite the shot. As I stood in the window it was a shock to me that this was not really a tough shot at all. At a slow moving car with a scope ( as I remember or even if not ) it was not hard at all. From my hunting days I know MANY that would call it a good shot.  Oswald was a Marine so for a Marine this was not a real challenge. As some of you will testify, Marines can shoot.  My dad was a WW2 Marine and boy could he shoot. Still a great Tragedy.
