You were in a perfect negotiating position.
1. You didn’t have to negotiate. You got the guy on contract for at least another year.
2. The guy on the opposite side of the table is a substandard performer who is having a bad year even for his low standards.
3. You have a precedent - Harbaugh took a pay cut.
4. There are many good alternatives if your guy leaves.
And then you decide to give a substandard performer more money than is appropriate and obligate yourself to an unheard of period of performance.
The only reasonable explanation is that you are in on the scam. No one in the position to make the decision you made can be as stupid or incompetent as you appear.
I smell Dave Joyner in the wood pile.
Not only did they not need to extend him but they extended him and they made it easier for him to get out and harder to fire him. This will go down as the dumbest contract in the history of Penn State athletics.
Prog
Actually he will go 7-5 next year and renegotiate his contract again for an even $10mill/yr. He's kind of like the college football version of the NFL's Kirk Cousins; nobody really wants him but damn if they don't continue to pay him, and pay him a lot.
One last thought, if MY bolts at year end, I don't think it's because he wants to stay. Will be interesting see how things pan out over the next couple of months. On one hand does JF really want him to stay, on the other hand, why did he sign on? Can't believe that MY, with his track record, would have signed up knowing that it was a shit show beforehand.
Absolute worst decision to keep CJF as head coach. He should have been fired years ago. Prepare for a decade of 7-5 records.
@uscgbosn he was going to walk, he didn’t have to be fired.
Our AD acted like we would have been lost without Franklin as coach. Simple fact is we didnt need him nearly as much as she thought. Giving him an extension after two piss poor years was incredibly stupid.
