i understood why Joe wanted his team looking squeaky clean. I understand why Franklin allows his guys to wear their hair as they want. I don’t think the letter was racist but just an old school fellow yearning for yesteryear. The letter should not have been sent but the situation should not be viewed as racial. Someone needs to remind our players where the chant WE ARE emanated from.
If I was coaching today, I would allow my athletes to wear their hair as they choose.

I spoke with my grandfather yesterday about the letter and he knows of the writer. He pretty much said the guy's been an A-hole since the mid 70's and hasnt changed since. He's said and done quite a few controversial things in the past and feeds off the attention he gets from it.
He used to show up at quite a few wrestling matches offering "advice" and at one time claimed that the Petersen Roll was named after him. He pretty much went into hiding when it was pointed out to him that the spelling was different.
He pretty much thrives on the same kind of attention that our very own FT seeks with some of his inane posts.
In the mid 60s a PSU player with long hair (I think it was Bob Riggle) was told by the coaching staff to cut his hair. He put on his helmet and had someone cut all the hair the stuck out. Not sure if the story is fact or legend!
I love and respect the ground rules put down by Joe in the day but then again it was a different day. Teams like Miami were setting the new trend and ( while I think most hated it) it was here to stay. It doesn’t mean the kids were bad , just were given the freedom to express themselves. Myself, I’m not sure if I care for the PSU “Lawnboys chain” but what the heck, if it’s fun and it motivates the players, go for it.
And by the way....YOU KIDS GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!
George Steinbrenner always had military-style rules for his ballplayers. Short hair and no facial hair beyond a mustache. It has been tested by players over the years with the most famous incident occurring when Lou Piniella challenged the rule during spring training in Fort Lauderdale, citing that Jesus had long hair. Steinbrenner responded to this request for exemption by pointing at the nearby swimming pool and saying "If you can walk on water, you can wear your hair any way you want."
Eyes from Atlanta so I’m use to it. Just follow the rules set by the coach. My accent drives my wife crazy when I get excited because Atlanta comes out in me lol

Well, if the letter writer also wrote letters Tommy Stevens, Michael Mauti, and/or Michael Zordich Jr about the length of their hair, then we can surmise it isn’t racial. If he didn’t write those individuals a letter, but felt compelled to write one to Mr. Sutherland, then it only leaves the public to speculate, doesn’t it?

Sounds about right. So, the guy is a habitual liar and an attention seeker. He’s the one we shouldn’t want to represent the university, it’s alumni, and it’s fans.
