Billy Napier not likely to last the season or even potentially the weekend. JF was on the fringes of the Alabama vacancy. Could JF be a bonafide contender for HC of Florida? It’s a chance for him to leave PSU with some dignity and return to the SEC where he won 9 games at Vandy (not an easy feat).
IMO, he would recruit the hell out of FLA/region, but I don't think his results would be any different than at PSU, maybe less.
Jimmy ain't goin' anywhere. He's got it made in the shade, lol!
It’s took James Franklin 10 years to build Penn St he’d be stupid to leave imo. It may have been James Franklin that wanted the 10 year contract because he wants to be at Penn St because like RIP said, he’s got it made in the shade baby. If James Franklin did leave who would you want Penn St to go after?
Stupid is a bad word but I believe it would be a step back unless he wants to rebuild another team. Florida is in bad shape right now.
@southern-psu-fan My personal pipe dream never gonna happen but wish it would is Jon Gruden.
Franklin isn’t going anywhere voluntarily, as RIP says he has it made in the shade at PSU.
Josh Pate who is a really great analyst and CFB insider stated recently that Lane Kiffin would “run to Florida” for the job were it to come open. Pate also went on to describe the success of Spurrier and Urban Meyer at UF and described the program as a powerhouse who could win a Natty as where Ole Miss is similar to PSU as a potential playoff team without legs to go the distance. If the Ole Miss job does become available would that create a chain reaction that would involve James Franklin? Franklin to oiled up Ole Miss Machine might not be a bad look for him.
No other school will hire Franklin - he has shown that he is incapable of creating a culture that will result in the winning of difficult games, domination of opponents and championships.
He is a nice guy but the world is full of nice guys who get paid much less than Franklin.
@tae-buetel other schools will hire him but not “big dawgs” that think they should be national championship contenders every other year.
@psujoe You wrote that better than I. Schools with championship aspirations will not hire Franklin. Other schools might hire him but I think Penn State was the only school that would pay him the absurd salary he is receiving.
He develops .... coaches.
ANd we were OK with Joe averaging in the Top 10? If JF would only win 40% of his big games, upset someone...
I think he needs some psychology training from Cael.
This is where I think his "1-0" motto is crap. It's all about winning, not improving. IMO of course, but Saban never talked about winning at all. That wasn't what he focused on.He develops .... coaches.

@roaminglion I wouldn’t compare Penn States talent with Alabama, Ohio St or Georgia. Whom would compare their talent with is Michigan, Florida, A&M, USC, Texas, Florida St, Auburn and maybe a few more and out of all them teams none of ‘em has done better imo than James Franklin the last 10 years except Michigan the big 12 is a shit conference and y’all know it. If Penn St played in the big 12 they’d dominate it. He’s definitely got to be better than he has been against Michigan and Ohio St but we haven’t sucked like some of them teams have the last 10 years. I still believe the QB position has killed us the last few years get it fixed and we will see a NC. I’m liking what I see in DA to this year so let’s see how we finish the season.
I didn't even mention talent.@roaminglion I wouldn’t compare Penn States talent with Alabama, Ohio St or Georgia. However, since you mentioned it... Saban took over Alabama in 2007, after they had 1 winning season over the previous 4 years (2003-2006). So he didn't exactly take over a high achieving, talent rich roster. He built it by talking about getting better everyday, and playing to the best of their ability. Not going "1-0"
@southern-psu-fan I don’t believe PSU under JF would have dominated any conference. Losses against OK, OK State and TX would have been common in the B12. And then there would have been the less common losses to teams on the same level as Kansas.
As someone else stated JF isn’t a big game coach and it wouldn’t matter what conference we’re in. I can remember when we joined the B10 that talk was that we would dominate that conference too and how has that worked out?
@roaminglion James Franklin is definitely not as good as Saban but not many are. Who can we get better than James Franklin that will come to Penn St? I don’t see anyone better that would come to Penn St and remember Pennsylvania ain’t what it use to be in recruiting it’s still good but not great like it use to be.
Yep. PA HS football sure ain't what it used to be. Even coal region HS football has gone down hill. I guess the coal mines have been shut down long ago and the soccer mom's have taken over the local school boards. Legendary coaches were forced out and king football down graded to an after thought.
Saban recruited well, but Alabama has lower standards than we expect. And I'm not talking about athletic standards :-).
But it is true that there is a breed of coach and athlete that talks about the process not the results. Cael seems to talk about process, having fun, competing... And even though they are highly ranked wrestlers they tend to perform at or above their ranking. Like Saban, JF rarely beats a team with better recruits 🙂
But IMO, Franklin is doing OK, he has just been one game away forever. Not dominant so we need some breaks.
@underlion Franklin rarely beats a team that has talent on the same level as PSU which is why his record vs top twenty teams is abysmal. He is very good at is running the score up on teams when he has far superior talent. In games vs teams with equal or superior talent he plays not to lose and in games vs teams that he knows have lesser talent he usually plays to win.
@psujoe I understand completely your frustration losing to Michigan and Ohio St I’m just afraid that we fire a coach winning 10 or 11 games and then we become Nebraska, A&M, Florida, Florida St or Auburn. Hopefully we get it done this year homer then all is forgiven 😂
@southern-psu-fan Once again….It’s not just Mich and OSU !!
I didn't say Franklin is leaving, and I didn't say anything other that Franklin's "1-0" motto isn't productive. It places the emphasis on winning, rather than getting better each week.@roaminglion James Franklin is definitely not as good as Saban but not many are. Who can we get better than James Franklin that will come to Penn St? I don’t see anyone better that would come to Penn St and remember Pennsylvania ain’t what it use to be in recruiting it’s still good but not great like it use to be.
Part of the problem with "we are 1 and 0" mindset, is sets you up as a short term oriented program vs strategically being long term oriented and driven to improve to overcome the major obstacles. In today's world, good enough is not good enough, others are going to catch up and eat your lunch.
