Stanford just announced the discontinuance of 11 sponsored sports, bringing them down to 25 overall from 36. Many were fringe sports, but some weren't such as Wrestling and Men's Volleyball

Two of the sports were co-ed sailing and women's sailing. How did that work in regard to Title IX?

I believe the amount of scholarships has to be equal across all sports, but not the same sport. Just like how women's basketball has more scholarships than men's basketball, women probably had more scholarships in sailing than men.

I think the men's team is co-ed and the women's is women only (meaning women would lose 2 sports). If total scholarships were all that mattered wouldn't there be a lot more women's teams to offset football's 85??

I read this article and it explained it nicely. It deal with head-counts as well as financial oppurtunity... so appanretly there's more that goes into it than just the number of men v. the number of women. "There are two different ways scholarships can be limited. Head-count sports, FBS football, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s gymnastics, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, are limited by the number of athletes that can receive scholarships. All other Division I sports are considered equivalency sports, and are limited by the amount of financial aid they can provide, although that aid can be divided among more athletes. "

Tough seeing another D1 wrestling program go down. Wrestling is on a trajectory to lose its NCAA status.
