@billmurray

I'm just done with people throwing statistics out with no understanding of their meaning. Sure most experts disagree with your analysis, but go right on thinking you know what's "really" happening. That's your prerogative. Out.

"The US has the highest number for many reasons smart ass.  Number one is we are testing WAY more than anyone."

No, Bill, I'm sorry but this is factually untrue. I think we should call this fake news? The U.S has never led the world in testing. We are catching up, but we still lag behind.

https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-testing-per-capita-us-italy-south-korea-2020-4

This may just be another lie put out by Trump. Just the other day he said we were close to testing 5 million U.S. citizens per day. This is the benchmark many healthcare experts AND business leaders have suggested to begin phased reopening. However, the facts are, as of yesterday, we've only tested just under 5 million people total. So, how are we going to get to 5 million tests per day? Of course, Trump denied saying that the next day despite video of him saying that exact thing.

I stopped paying attention to his dog and pony show when he said most major hospitals only have 2 ventilators. This, again, is untrue. I work in what would be considered a "community" hospital and we have approximately 25 ventilators, not including the anesthesia machines which could be used in an emergency and that increases the number by about 17. I also have trained and worked in major hospitals and they would have been shut down if they only possessed 2 ventilators. Then came the comment about injecting disinfectants into the human body as a possible treatment. A comment so mind boggling that Dr. Birx couldn't even look up and acknowledge he even said it. As usual, he blamed the media for a comment he is on video making. No accountability, as usual. He undermines the healthcare experts. He undermines the CDC. He even undermines himself by tweeting out support for anti stay at home protestors in states where he doesn't like the governor. Who does that? Is that what we have stooped to? Applauding and condoning childish, divisive behavior?  Shame on him and anybody that supports that behavior.

He also fired the CDC director of vaccines because he disagreed with him on hydroxychloroquine. This was a bad move. Who fires a guy in the middle of a worldwide pandemic that has dedicated his entire career to developing vaccines? It's reckless and dangerous.

Hydroxychloroquine, while it did show some reasons for optimism in the treatment of COVID 19, now carries an FDA warning of life threatening cardiac arrhythmias. This is why Dr. Fauci and others were reluctant to endorse the drug without more testing, despite Trump touting it as a silver bullet. Trump even interrupted and prevented Dr. Fauci from answering a question about the drug during a news conference.

As for Cuomo, I don't really know much about him. I don't pay much attention to NY politics because I have no reason to. This is my first exposure to him. I will say, though, he has looked far more presidential in this fiasco that the President himself. Cuomo is prepared, knowledgable, truthful, and sincere. He presents the facts. He doesn't make things up as he goes then deny it the next day and blame the media. He is respectful to reporters. He doesn't call them names like a small child. He doesn't use twitter to degrade people. He isn't perfect but he is handling the situation admirably.

Bill, your flu numbers are interesting. I have no idea what any of that means as far as COVID. Could these patients have had the flu? Maybe, sure. But if they were tested and positive for COVID then why are we questioning that? I don't understand the argument for profit? This doesn't make any sense and you would have to clarify that for me without referencing a far right wing agenda. Because that accusation sounds right out of that playbook. The total numbers of COVID cases may be less than we feared, yes, but isn't that a good thing? If the governors would have blown it off and ignored it, and the healthcare system was overrun with COVID patients, like in Italy, wouldn't that have also been largely criticized? Why is preparing for something a bad thing? Maybe if the Trump administration would have payed attention back in January or earlier when they were being briefed about it, we would be out of the stay at home guidelines and far less economic damage would have been done?

In closing, I will just leave with this. I came here in the interest of Penn State football when the Pennlive site stopped taking comments. I noticed an underlying political tone here from the start. I warned you guys to leave it at the door and stick to sports only or it was going to divide us. I even implored caven to pay more attention and stop the political comments. He didn't and here we are. Now, when I log on, Trump propaganda ads pop up on this site. Is that necessary? I left this site for several months when you guys starting expressing political opinions and right wing tones. Some here don't express their opinions directly, but we can all see the "likes" you give those with the far right wing comments. I am far from a far left liberal (both of my grandfathers started working in the coal mines at age 13, both of my parents were blue collar workers) but I also can read and listen and I can interpret what I see and hear intelligently. Those of you who only listen to one side of things selling their agenda should take a step back and look at things from all perspectives before believing everything you see and hear. Trump is a narcissist and a compulsive liar. He contradicts himself daily while childishly hiding behind twitter to call people names and blame everyone else for his shortcomings. Anybody who doesn't acknowledge this is (as Bill says) as blind as a frog's ass. Whatever that means? Mike Pence couldn't form an independent thought to save his own life. He is a puppet and never should have been let into the Mayo clinic without a mask. Shame on the Mayo clinic for bending the rules for him. I realize this may be my last post here and I am at peace with that. This site is toxic. To roam and Funeral Director, I hope you and your families remain safe and healthy. I have seen you guys give well thought out, intelligent responses over the years and sometimes be attacked for them. I sincerely hope everybody here stays safe and healthy. It's been real.

@roaminglion there's no analysis for any "experts" to agree with.  Those are SIMPLE numbers available on Official websites.  Right there in plain site to read.

Trump, Cruomo, Dr. Birx, Dr. Fouci and the governor of California have all done a great job that’s why we haven’t had a million deaths from this coronavirus. I might not agree with Cruomo’s politics but that man has been great dealing with this coronavirus. NY has so many people and IMO that’s why they’ve had so many more deaths and people getting sick. As for people knocking him for needing 30k ventalators that’s BS because at the time he may have thought he needed that many. Dr.Fouci is the best and he’s even changed his mind on a few things and that’s ok because things change when we’ve never been through something like this. I don’t like Monday morning QB’s when people are dying and that’s exactly what some of the politicians have done on both sides more democrats which is normal because republicans have the whitehouse but if the shoe was on the other foot republicans would be crying more. I’ve told y’all just pull for whoever is in charge and you’ll be happier lol. Get your butt back in here 99 you ain’t going to leave me and lake in here with all these Republicans lol just kidding buddy

Any statistician will tell you numbers are rarely simple and always need context and interpretation. However, as I said it's cool... you do you, go forth and prosper.

@southern-psu-fan from up here, Cuomo screwed up royally in many phases as did Wolf in PA.  Until two weeks ago we still has buses travelling from NYC through State College.  Subways open? Not Cleaned? No Restrictions? That's basically 100s of thousands of virus in a tube every day. not sending retirement home folks to proper hospitals, begging for things he didn't need, letting his NYC mayor upstage him. People mistake his demeanor for his competence. Wolf basically did the same things.  I mean, you can fish but not golf. We have ALL been packed into walmarts/grocery chain stores like sardines instead of spreading us out by keeping those smaller stores open...many dumb, easily handled situations.  Many other states did that, and they're doing just fine with SOME pain.

@roaminglion .....I'm a stat guy/journalist for a living.  I know the meanings. I know how they can be manipulated. I put raw data up for you.  nothing hidden.

I didn't say they were manipulated at all, I said "numbers are rarely simple and always need context and interpretation"

Big difference.

There is a growing list of epidemiologists that are providing data supporting Bill Murry’s position. We went into mandated self isolation to flatten the cure so not to overwhelm our medical facilities. The curve has been flattened so that reason to restrict the population no longer exists. No doubt decisions made by the government were partly influenced by emotions and politics. It will be some time in the future, after all the data is analyzed, will we know if what we did was correct.

There are lots of points of views by many smart people. I don’t have a strong opinion. Being 66 and in the high risk group because of age, I will continue practicing social distancing even after the restrictions are lifted.

People are frazzled. Best thing we can all do is be kind and compassionate and respectful of the opinions of others.

I do hope college football resumes this fall. I need to post stuff so roam can beat me up. A good beating makes my heart smile.

I don’t know what the answer is but the fact is we can’t wait around until there is no jobs left because then we’ll have 200 million deaths to worry about. IMO Trump needs to continue what he’s been doing and that’s listen to Dr. Fouci. Stay safe up there 🐍
