It's okay Joe, for this coaching search we are calling Tulane a powerhouse while Duke always sucks.I believe the Iowa St coach is and should be off the table after the loss today. Manny gets the win late against Clemson. They scored 46 points in a shootout. Still a few games to play but the sooner the better.
I took Manny off the table after his team got pounded by Illinois and then took him off again when they got pounded by Tulane.
Oh OK !! I thought it was assuming it’s the same old Tulane that is a little dog that will never beat the big dogs.
Manny Diaz is a fine defensive coordinator but he has no business even being mentioned in the head coaching conversation for the current opening at Penn State...
@the-funeral-director well he is being mentioned and there’s a lot of Penn St fans that would love to have Manny back as head coach. I’d bet he’s in their top 5
It really doesn't matter to a point unless some serious issues get fixed:
- OC
- DC
- O'line
- D'line
Next HC/Coords have got to be able to pull from the portal to get the foundations fixed.
Those lines get fixed with mean, nasty, and smart, and a lot of good stuff can happen.
College ball is now semi-pro or another way to look at it, is high school vs AAU.
The portal is the resume and tryout for the next generation of players.
I was thinking:
- we were cheep when we hired JF...but that was a different administration
- contract extension we threw $ at him...different administration
- when asked for an extension before the year the current administration laughed or said no.
Do we really think PSU is ready to roll out the Brinks Truck or will they look for the diamond in the rough?
We need to be top 10 but recruiting at the 14 level (somebody listed the recent numbers) doesn't get it done. Man we were so close, beat ND and play in the NC but alas we still needed to follow it up this year and the wheels fell off. Not the administrations fault IMO.
@underlion if I remember correctly James Franklin was one of the hottest coaches out there when he was hired. Vanderbilt won 9 games a few years while he was there and he was beating Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and won a bowl game something Vandy hadn’t done in decades. IMO he was a great hire and he done a very respectable job he just missed on a few players and the wheels fell off. It’s not just James Franklin this happens too most big time college football coaches go through this. It’s time for a change for James Franklin and Penn St. just my opinion
In general you are right Southern but he was not the prettiest girl at the dance and he was a value hire IMO. Fans are short sighted. The Clemson coach was a god for a year or two. JF never made god status just the dreaded POTENTIAL.
As for Belechek, and I don't follow the NFL, he was a winner at the pro level. He seemed to know when to switch out starters and fit the game to them. Do I want him? No way, as I don't think he can recruit. But I would not diminish his success as a coach because he played with under inflated balls and was he steeling signs. He was good at something and if the system allowed him to cheat, shame on them. What do they say in NASCAR 'if you ain't cheating you ain't trying'? Even golf has its cheaters now. It is largely you against the referee and if you hold and get away with it then you beat the ref. If I don't catch a ball but make it look good and get the call that is great. Steeling signs has always been part of sports.
I don't know what I want but I have plenty I don't want. Urban is the antithesis of what PSU stood for. JF and the team did not embarrass the school off the field. I liked JF's results except for big games which nobody, not even Saban can answer for.
We PSU fans want a lot...most teams just want wins. I still am stuck on the old thinking that they are students, some are but that train has largely left the station. The NIL and NCAA finally made it what it was anyway.
Well Underlion Billy Boy Belicheat won because he had a guy named Tom Brady on his team...When that guy named Tom Brady wasn't on his team he won nothing...That is all you need to know about Billie Boy Belicheat...The original practice peeping Tom along with other things...Once again this coaching search should come down to 3 targets in this order...Cignetti, Brohm or Brady...
I pretty much agree with all you're saying, especially this sentence - "Urban is the antithesis of what PSU stood for. " My point is the operative word in your sentence is "stood" (note the past tense). Since this implies we used to, but no longer do, I have absolutely no problem with hiring Urbs! I used to be stuck on the old way of thinking too, but when the "student athletes" became hired hands and we sold naming rights of the field to West Shore Home instead of recognizing JoePa, I gave up the ghost! We're no longer different than the rest of 'em. If Urbs can get us a Natty, bring him on!
JF really didn't beat anybody while at Vandy, his 'big' 2013 wins were against an 8-5 GA, 5-7 TN, and 4-8 FL. Yeah I guess you can say they were big name wins but it wasn't like he was knocking off top 10 teams.
Take those three wins out and he was 6-7
You are 100% correct @RIP as big time college football has become professional football with no salary cap and yearly free agency...Managing a college football program today is more difficult than running an NFL organization...All I am saying is if you bring Ole Cousin Urban in you better have a few babysitters assigned to him...You can't question the guys success...He wins...
First confirmed interview that I’ve heard of is Key from GT.
Allegedly Elko has interest and so does Deboer. Manny is NOT a candidate.
And you are correct, FD. I'm thinking, if we can afford to pay Urbs, we can afford to pay for a couple of babysitters, as long as they're not AK & JK!
@rip If the price is right, I'll come out of retirement to baby sit!
If we land Urbs, we'll have to see what's left in the coffers. You'll have 1st dibs!
Urban Meyer would be a potential disaster.Let Florida or LSU have him. If I thought it was possible I’d probably have DeBoer at the top of my list but for now I’m sticking with Brady, Brohm and Drinkwitz.
@psujoe I’m impressed with the drinkwitz dude he’s done a good job at Missouri and he’s good with the transfer portal and we have the kind of players he needs. Meyer was a great coach but he’s been away for a few years and could he adjust to the transfer portal and NIL because I believe Saban got out because he seen he wasn’t going to like it. I’ll take urban but I’d rather get somebody that’s did good with the portal and NIL and Drinkwitz, Key and Manny Diaz has. I don’t believe Cignetti will leave Indiana but if he will I’ll take him too.
Oh RIP I did use the past tense (stood for) intentionally. I'm just not admitting the truth yet. And thankfully Urb said he is not coming back. And if Saban wins I'm leaving the country. That is just a threat 🙂
As for Belichick, he switched from Bledsoe, a winning QB, to Brady his 1st year. Kind of daring if I remember right? Wait, didn't the GOAT Brady know his balls were underinflated? Is he a clueless idiot? I think not. Again a team sport and because Brady was great Belechick gets no credit?
Belichick started Brady due to a Bledsoe injury and then stuck with him for the remainder of his career; good call, I think, lol.
If we land Urbs, we'll have to see what's left in the coffers. You'll have 1st dibs!
Hello fellow Nits. I saw this and found it interesting to pass along. Sorry if you’ve all seen it already.

I’m backing off Matt Campbell now they lost to many games and the last 2 OC we got is from the big 12 I just ain’t feeling it anymore. Cig, Key, manny and Elko are my top 4 and if we go with an OC the dude at Oregon is my choice. Manny is still my first choice but I’ll take any one of these dudes and feel very confident about it.

Let’s not pretend that Bellicheat saw the greatness in terrific Tom and decided to start him over a healthy Drew.Bledsoe was severely injured and that’s the only reason Bellicheat started Brady. He’s nothing without Brady.
I hope Bellicheat stays ten years at NC because the longer he stays the more he will prove how much of a fraud he really is.
