cignetti is staying at Indiana. Got a new Contract today. My son told me.
See how he leverage the PSU Rumours....that is how JFF got a 10 year.
In other news, the sun is hot. Cignetti was never leaving IU, I fully expected IU to give him a huge bag and they did. He's now the 3rd highest paid coach behind Smart and Day at 11.6 mil per year. Franklin only made 8 or 9.
Dat's a whole lot of money to pay upfront for a promise and some hope so to speak, especially from a program with no to speak of tradition.
But PSU is gonna being paying alot also; The history and expectations behind the money are very different though.
Is this the first example of Pat Kraft getting another school to spend their money and commit to long-term obligations? If so, he is doing it right! Keep stirring that pot!
I just think it would be insane to do a contract longer than 5 years unless there are some serious outs for both sides. With a pretty well established program and the use of the portal, I'd think 3 years outta tell you what you have on the sideline in today's game.
Coaching is about to become more important than ever with the transfer portal and NIL. Coaches that do more with less might be the ones winning the NC’s because all the best players will be scattered out through 30 or 40 teams instead of the top 10 when recruiting was more important.
@southern-psu-fan I think you are right. And if so, that means that selecting the right coach is even more difficult than before because of the playoffs and the transfer portal. Therefore, maybe the best way to proceed is to get a high-value coach that is not involved with the playoffs for a year and set up the permanent hire during the following season.
For example, what if Penn State were to get a 1-year commitment from a guy like Saban in November of this year, but his "official involvement" would not begin until after the conclusion of this season? The goals for the "high-value interim hire" would be stated as "stabilization of the program". Nothing more. That would allow the interim coach to fulfill his obligation by ensuring the stabilization of the desired players and the recruitment of other desired players. Penn State would then have an additional 10 months to target and lock-in their permanent hire and the big-name interim coach could then return to their life.
